Gabriella (Gaby) Willems (born 1 July 1997) is a Belgian judoka, [1] [2] winner of the bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [3]
Willems grew up in Barchon, Liège Province, Belgium. Her first name is testament to her Italian heritage, her father having emigrated from the Venice region, Italy to work in the Belgian coalmines. [4] She attended primary school in Verviers where she tried her hand at gymnastics, swimming, karate and dance before turning to judo and joining amateur club J.C. Andrimont in Dison at the age of 6. [5] [6] Although she later decided to train professionally at other clubs, she always stayed a member of J.C. Andrimont and presented herself as such at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. [7]
Willems attended Athénée royal Thil Lorrain in Verviers where she obtained in 2015 her CESS (Certificat d'enseignement secondaire supérieur). [8]
Willems is in a relationship with Italian judoka, Christian Parlati. [9] The couple lives in Naples where both train at the Parlati-family founded and managed Nippon Club. [10] [11]
Having won several youth national titles, Willems won her first senior national title in 2016. [12]
Willems first rose to international prominence winning a bronze medal at the 2017 World Judo Juniors Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. [13] Two weeks later she was crowned a second time senior national champion. [14]
Willems was the silver medalist of the 2020 Judo Grand Slam Düsseldorf in the –70 kg category. [15]
She started 2021 well, with a 5th placing at the 2021 Judo Grand Slam Tel Aviv in mid-february and a bronze medal at the 2021 Judo Grand Slam Tbilisi in March. Being close to qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, in a fight against Barbara Matic, Willems tore the cruciate ligaments of her right knee at the 2021 Judo Grand Slam in Antalya, Turkey, putting an end to her Olympic dreams for Tokyo. Following a lengthy recovery period, Willems re-entered competition a year later at the 2022 European Judo Championships. [18] In October and November of that year, she won silver medals at the 2022 Judo Grand Slam Abu Dhabi [19] and 2022 Judo Grand Slam Baku. [20]
Willems's good form continued in to 2023 and she won a bronze medal at the 2023 Judo Grand Slam Tel Aviv. [21] But then, more injuries: first, Willems had to undergo Latarjet surgery to treat recurrent shoulder dislocations and then, upon her return to competition in the 2023 Judo World Masters in September, in warm-up, she suffered another cruciate ligament tear in the same right knee she injured before. [22]
After another lengthy recovery period, Willems returned to competition at the 2024 European Judo Championships where she was eliminated in the 2nd round. [23] Willems had little time to gather the necessary points to qualify for the Games. Needing to finish at least 5th at the 2024 World Judo Championships in order to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics, she managed to do just that and booked her ticket for Paris. [24]
At the 2024 Summer Olympics Willems upset competitors ranked 2, 5, and 7 on her way to winning the bronze medal in the Women's 70 kg category. [24]
Yarden Gerbi is an Israeli former judoka world champion. She won an Olympic bronze medal competing for Israel at the 2016 Summer Olympics, in women's 63 kg judo.
Shira Rishony is an Israeli Olympic lightweight judoka. She competes at U48 kg. She competed for Israel at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics she won a bronze medal in the mixed team event, and placed 5th in the women's 48 kg event. She won a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championship. Rishony represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in judo; in the women's 48 kg she came in 17th, and in the mixed team event Team Israel came in ninth.
Odette Giuffrida is an Italian judoka. She won the gold medal in the women's 52 kg event at the 2024 World Judo Championships held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She competed at the 2023 World Judo Championships, where she placed third in the women's 52 kg.
Daria Hennadiyivna Bilodid is a Ukrainian judoka. She is a two-time world champion, a three-time European champion and won a bronze medal in the women's 48 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Bilodid is also a junior world champion (2018) and a junior European champion (2016).
Amandine Buchard is a French judoka. She represented France at the 2020 Summer Olympics winning the silver medal in the half lightweight event and a gold medal in the mixed team event. She is a third dan black belt.
Timna Nelson-Levy is an Israeli Olympic judoka. She competes in the under 57 kg weight category and represented Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the mixed team event. In European Championships, she won a gold medal in 2022 and bronze in 2016 and 2024. Nelson-Levy represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in judo in the women's 57 kg, coming in ninth, and in the mixed team event, at when Team Israel came in ninth.
Gefen Primo is an Israeli judoka. She competes in the under 52 kg weight category. In 2017 she was the European Youth Olympic Champion. She won bronze medals in the 2018 European Judo Championships, 2021 World Judo Championships, 2021 European Judo Championships, and 2022 World Judo Championships. Primo represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in judo in the women's 52 kg, in which she came in seventh, and in the mixed team event, in which Team Israel came in ninth.
Christa Deguchi is a Japanese-born Canadian judoka. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the women's 57 kg event, after winning gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her victory made her the first ever Canadian to win gold in judo at the Olympics.
Diyora Keldiyorova is an Uzbek judoka. She won the gold medal in the women's 52 kg event at the 2024 Summer Olympics held in Paris, France. She is also a two-time silver medalist in the women's 52 kg event at the World Judo Championships.
Romane Dicko is a French judoka. In 2021, she won one of the bronze medals in the women's +78 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She also won bronze at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Dicko won gold in her event at the 2022 World Judo Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and she is a four-time gold medalist at the European Judo Championships.
Michaela Polleres is an Austrian judoka. In 2021, she won the silver medal in the women's 70 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She won bronze at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Polleres is also a bronze medalist at the 2021 and 2023 World Championships and the 2018 European Championships. She is a third degree black belt.
Chelsie Giles is a British judoka. She won the gold medal in the women's 52 kg event at the 2022 European Judo Championships held in Sofia, Bulgaria. She won one of the bronze medals in her event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Giles' medal was the first awarded to Great Britain at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Réka Pupp is a Hungarian judoka. She is a two-time bronze medalist at the European Judo Championships and she competed at multiple editions of the World Judo Championships. She also represented Hungary at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan and the European Games in 2015 and 2019.
Inbar Lanir is an Israeli Olympic silver medalist judoka and 2023 world champion. She competes in the under 78 kg weight category. She also won a mixed-team bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games. In addition to winning the 2023 world championship, she won gold medals at the 2023 World Masters and the 2023 Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam. Lanir competed for Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and won the silver medal in the women's 78 kg, while she also represented Israel in the mixed team event, in which Team Israel came in ninth.
Raz Hershko is an Israeli Olympic silver medalist and European champion judoka. She was the 2015 European U18 Champion, the 2017 European U23 championships silver medalist, and won a bronze medal in the 2023 world championships. She competed for Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in mixed team. She is the 2024 European Champion. Representing Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Hershko won the silver medal in judo in the women's +78 kg, and also competed in the mixed team event, in which Team Israel came in ninth.
Nils Stump is a Swiss judoka. He won the gold medal in the men's 73 kg event at the 2023 World Judo Championships held in Doha, Qatar. He is a bronze medalist at the 2021 European Judo Championships held in Lisbon, Portugal. He also competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
Gili Sharir is an Israeli judoka and Olympic bronze medalist, having won a bronze medal in mixed team event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Sharir also won a bronze at the mixed team event of the 2022 World Championships. At the European Championships, she won a bronze medal in 2022 and a silver medal in 2023. Sharir represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in judo in the women's 63 kg, and in the mixed team event, at which Team Israel came in ninth.
