Ganesh Nagaraju is an Indian biochemist, geneticist, cancer biologist and a full professor at the Department of Biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He has been studying DNA damage responses in mammalian cells, and mechanisms underlying chromosome instability genetic diseases and cancer. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2015. [1] In 2018, Nagaraju received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Sciences from CSIR. [2] This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to Science and Technology, and is considered one of the highest awards for science in India.
Ganesh Nagaraju earned his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in 2003 and did his post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. [3] On his return to India in 2007, [4] he joined his alma mater, Indian Institute of Science, where he serves as a full professor. [5] His research focus is on cancer biology and chromosome instability and his team is involved in developing DNA repair protocols. [6] His studies have been documented by way of a number of articles [7] [note 1] and ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles has listed 38 of them. [8] Nagaraju has delivered invited speeches at several international conferences which included the seminar on Distinct roles of RAD51 paralogs in DNA damage responses held at Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics on 4 October 2016 [9] and the Indo-French Conference on Recent Advances in Genome Integrity and Plasticity held at Bengaluru in December 2017. [10] Nagaraju also hosts several post-doctoral and doctoral researchers at his laboratory. [11]
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Government of India awarded Nagaraju the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2015. [1] He received Prof. K. V. Giri memorial award for best PhD Thesis in 2003, B. M. Birla Science Prize in Biology in 2012. and Sir C.V. Raman Young Scientist award from Government of Karnataka in 2015. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhantnagar Prize in Biological Sciences for the year 2018. [12]

With a team of clinicians and entrepreneurs, he is actively involved in translating his research into implantable biomedical devices for orthopedic and dental restorative applications and currently leading a center of Excellence at IISc, Bangalore. In 2015, he received the National Bioscience award. Besides, Prof. Basu is also involved in development of Zirconum diboride based UHTCs.
Kalappa Muniyappa is an Indian molecular biologist and geneticist, known for his researches on the chromatization of DNA and gene targeting. He is a professor and chairman of the department of biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1995, for his contributions to biological sciences.
Umesh Varshney is an Indian molecular biologist, academician and the head of a laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He is a J. C. Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology and is known for his studies on protein synthesis and DNA repair in Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tapas Kumar Kundu is an Indian molecular biologist, academician and at present the Director of Central Drug Research Institute, a prestigious research institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lucknow. He is the head of the Transcription and Disease Laboratory of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. He is known for his studies on the regulation of Gene expression and his contributions in cancer diagnostics and the development of new drug candidates for cancer and AIDS therapeutics. Rajesh Sudhir Gokhale is currently the Secretary for Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. He joined National Institute of immunology after conducting his postdoctoral training at Stanford University, He was the director of Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology from 2009 to 2016. Gokhale is known for his studies on the metabolic diversity of pathogens. He is credited with the discovery of a family of Long-chain Fatty acyl-AMP ligases (FAAL) and his studies assisted in the elucidation of biochemical crosstalk between fatty acid synthases and polyketide synthases in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He holds US and Indian patents for his invention of Method to Modulate Pigmentation Process in the Melanocytes of Skin. She was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Medical Sciences in the year 2020. Her research interest involves exploration of the genetic and epigenetic changes that initiate cancer and its progression. She is also focusing on understanding the molecular events that drive cancer and resistance towards chemotherapeutic drugs.
