History

Early Years

Gazman was founded in 1974. [8] Founder Garry Austin established the company to distribute stylish clothing in the Australian menswear market at exceptional value. [9]

In the initial years after launching Gazman, Austin spent most of his time locally manufacturing and selling men's trouser lines. These lines were largely successful and their high-volume sales allowed Austin to open his very first retail store in Melbourne in 1989. Soon Gazman expanded its product range to incorporate men's shirts, jackets, knitwear, and accessories. With this, the business experienced fast-tracked growth and was able to expand across Australia.

1990s

In 1995, the first Gazman stores were open in Western Australia, followed by South Australia store launches in 1996. In 1997, Gazman entered a partnership with Australian retail giants: Myer and David Jones, who began stocking Gazman items in their stores. Entering into this partnership further increased revenue and profits paving the way for additional stores to be launched in New South Wales and Queensland in 1999. [10]

2000s

By 2000, Austin's son, Will Austin, joined his father to work in Austin Group. His arrival also saw Gazman open stores in ACT (2006) and Tasmania (2008), effectively gaining nationwide business. Will was also present during the Gazman online site launch and is responsible for aligning Gazman with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. [11]

Marketing

Branding

The Gazman brandmark consists of the company type-mark in Bodoni font and is integrated with signature brand colours: dark navy and white. The primary brandmark showcases a dark navy type-mark against a white backdrop. However, this can also be used in reverse with a white type-mark against a dark navy backdrop which is used in many instances, including store branding. Gazman also includes seasonal colours along with the standard dark navy and white. Popular colour tones that are recurrent in occasional catalogues are grey and digital navy. Sales and promotions are also accounted for with either a premium shade of red or clearance red (a shade lighter). [12]
