Geoff Meggs is a Canadian politician,who served on Vancouver,British Columbia's City Council from 2008 to 2017. He was first elected in the 2008 municipal election, [1] and resigned his seat on city council in 2017 to accept a job as chief of staff to John Horgan,the Premier of British Columbia.
Meggs was born in Ontario and grew up in Willowdale,Toronto and Ottawa. [1] [2] His father,who was trained as an Anglican priest,was a broadcaster with the CBC,and his mother was a nurse who retired to become a homemaker. [2] Meggs graduated from the University of Toronto. [1] After graduating he joined the Canada World Youth exchange program and spent time in Malaysia. [2] He eventually relocated to Vancouver in 1976. [3] Meggs' career includes time as a journalist,a communications director in the offices of former Premier Glen Clark and former Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell,an executive director of the BC Federation of Labour,and president of Tideline Communications.
He is the author or co-author of four published books,including Salmon:The Decline of the West Coast Fishery (Douglas &McIntyre,1991),which won the 1992 Lieutenant-Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing,and Cork Lines and Canning Lines;the Glory Years of Fishing on the West Coast,with Duncan Stacey (Douglas &McIntyre,1992).
Meggs ran as part of the Vision Vancouver slate in the 2008 election. [4] He received 49,538 votes,in ninth place out of a field of 32 candidates for Vancouver councillor,the fewest votes among the seven elected Vision Vancouver councilors. [4] [5] In 2011,Meggs was re-elected as a Vision Vancouver city councillor with 56,183 votes,sixth out of a field of 40 candidates.
In June 2014,Meggs faced a court petition to remove him and fellow councillor Kerry Jang from office for allegedly violating rules on conflict of interest in connection with the rezoning of a public housing project. [6]

The Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE) is a municipal political party in the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia. It has traditionally been associated with tenants, environmentalists, and the labour movement. COPE is generally guided by democratic socialist principles following the split of its social democratic wing in 2014 to form OneCity Vancouver, and has a long history of advocating for issues such as improving public transit and investing in affordable housing. It last held a majority government on city council from 2002 to 2005. Fin Donnelly is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the House of Commons of Canada to represent the electoral district of Port Moody—Coquitlam. He is a member of the New Democratic Party. Donnelly was first elected as a Member of Parliament in a by-election on November 9, 2009, in the New Westminster—Coquitlam electoral district. In the one year he spent in the 40th Canadian Parliament, he acted as the NDP's fisheries critic and introduced six private member bills. He was re-elected in 2011 and in the ensuing 41st Parliament he re-introduced the same six bills, two of which — concerning the crime of luring a child — were adopted in the Safe Streets and Communities Act. He also introduced a bill titled Ban on Shark Fin Importation Act which was defeated in a vote in the Conservative-majority House. He acted as the Official Opposition's critic on Fisheries and Oceans until the 2012 leadership election after which Tom Mulcair moved him over to critic on Western Economic Diversification and then demoted him to role of deputy critic. Donnelly again won re-election in the 2015 federal election and was promoted back to fisheries critic. In the 42nd Parliament he re-introduced his previous bill to make closed containment facilities mandatory for commercial finfish aquaculture but the bill was defeated.
Kerry Jang (鄭文宇) is a Canadian politician. He previously served as councillor on Vancouver, British Columbia's City Council between 2008 and 2018. From 2013, he also represented the city of Vancouver on the Greater Vancouver Regional District Board as a director.

The Coast Salish people of the Canadian Pacific coast depend on salmon as a staple food source, as they have done for thousands of years. Salmon has also served as a source of wealth and trade and is deeply embedded in their culture, identity, and existence as First Nations people of Canada. Traditional fishing is deeply tied to Coast Salish culture and salmon were seen "as gift-bearing relatives, and were treated with great respect" since all living things were once people according to traditional Coast Salish beliefs. Salmon are seen by the Coast Salish peoples are beings similar to people but spiritually superior.
