Makerere University is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922, and the oldest currently active university in East Africa. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school, offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. These colleges include College of Natural Sciences (CONAS), College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Engineering Art & Design (CEDAT), College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies (CAES), College Of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS), College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHUSS), College of Computing and Information Sciences (COCIS), College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & Bio-security (COVAB), College of Education and External Studies (CEES) and Makerere University Business School (MUBS). In addition, Makerere has onother campus in Eastern Uganda Jinja City.
Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya is a Ugandan politician and physician who was the seventh vice president of Uganda from 23 May 2003 until 23 May 2011. He has represented the constituency of Busiro County North in the Ugandan Parliament since 1996. His autobiography, Intricate Corridors to Power, was published in 2008.
Busoga College Mwiri, commonly known as Busoga College, is a boarding secondary school located in the eastern region of Uganda, specifically Jinja.
Crispus Walter Kiyonga is a Ugandan medical doctor, politician and career diplomat. He is the current Chancellor of the Makerere University, the largest public university of Uganda. He served as Uganda's Ambassador to China. He previously served as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of Uganda from 2006 to 2016.
The Makerere University School of Medicine (MUSM), also known as the Makerere University Medical School, is the school of medicine of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university. The medical school has been part of Makerere University since 1924. The school provides medical education at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Stephen Robert Isabalija, is a Ugandan civil servant, management professional, accountant, academic and academic administrator. He is the immediate past permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in Uganda, having served in that capacity from November 2016, until his termination on 24 August 2017.
Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanja is a Ugandan veterinarian, academic, and academic administrator. He has been the chancellor of Gulu University, a public institution of higher education, since October 2014, replacing Martin Aliker. He is a former vice chancellor of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He assumed that position in 1989 and stepped down in October 2014. Before that, he served as the deputy vice chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda.
Raphael Owor is a Ugandan physician, pathologist, academic and medical researcher. He is the immediate past Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, serving in that capacity from 2003 until 2007. Prior to that, he served as the Dean of Makerere University School of Medicine, after serving as Pathology Professor and Head of Department at Makerere University.
Richard Bwogi Masembe Kanyerezi, was a Ugandan physician and academic. At the time of his death, he was the Chairman of the Board of Kampala Hospital, a private hospital that he co-founded and co-owned in Kampala, Uganda's capital city. He served in the past as Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Makerere University School of Medicine. He was a consultant physician, specializing in the field of Rheumatology.
Professor Charles Ibingira is a Ugandan surgeon, academic and medical administrator. He is the Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He was appointed to that position in November 2015, on a four-year renewable contract. He has previously served as the Dean of Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences, from 2010 until 2014.
Barnabas Nawangwe, is a Ugandan architect, academic and the current vice chancellor of the Makerere University, the largest public university of Uganda. He served his first five-year term from 2017 until August 2022. On 12 August 2022, the Makerere University Council re-appointed him for a second term of five years.
Magid Mayanja Kagimu is a Ugandan physician, academic and community leader, who serves as Professor of Medicine and Head of the Gastroenterology Division at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.
Thomas Ongodia Aisu, was a Ugandan medical doctor, microbiologist, academic and academic administrator, who at the time of his death, served as an associate professor at the Soroti University School of Health Sciences.
Roy D. Mugerwa was a Ugandan physician, cardiologist and researcher. His contribution to the world of academics include being a Professor Emeritus at Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, cardiology in Uganda, researching HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and his efforts to find an effective HIV vaccine.
Vinand Mukatabala Nantulya, is a Ugandan physician, pathologist, medical researcher, entrepreneur and academic administrator, who since 3 October 2017, serves as the Chancellor of Busitema University, a public university in the Eastern Region of Uganda.
Monica Musenero Masanza is a Ugandan veterinarian, microbiologist and epidemiologist, who serves as a consultant epidemiologist to the government of Uganda and serves as an advisor to the president of Uganda on epidemics and pandemics. She previously served as the Principal Epidemiologist and Assistant Commissioner for Epidemiology and Surveillance in the Uganda Ministry of Health. She has previously played leading roles in the control of Ebola epidemics in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in the West African country of Sierra Leone.
Winifred Mary Tarinyeba Kiryabwire, , is a Ugandan lawyer, academic and businesswoman who is the chairperson of DFCU Bank, a large commercial bank in Uganda. She was appointed to that position effective 1 April 2022.
Sebastian Kakule Kyalwazi,, was a Ugandan consultant surgeon who served as professor and head of surgery at Makerere University School of Medicine and concurrently as senior consultant surgeon at Mulago National Referral Hospital from the early 1970s until his death in the early 1990s. He is reported to be the first indigenous African to qualify as a surgeon in East and Central Africa.
Jovan William Mabudo Kiryabwire was a Ugandan neurosurgeon, who served as a consultant neurosurgeon at Mulago National Referral Hospital. He concurrently served as a Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Makerere University School of Medicine. He died in January 2004 from stomach cancer. He is reported to be the first indigenous African to qualify as neurosurgeon in the countries of East and Central Africa.
