The New Hope Movement (Malay : Gerakan Harapan Baru) or simply known as GHB, was a social movement in Malaysia. The movement was launched by G18 led by former PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu at a hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur on 13 July 2015. [1] The G18 is the former moderate and progressive leaders of PAS who were ousted from senior position earlier at the party's 2015 PAS Muktamar. [2]

The movement was the principles of moderation, inclusiveness, progressiveness and concern for the people, and committed to the real value of Islam, 'mercy to all' (rahmatan lil 'alamin) which gives protection and justice to all Malaysian. Membership of the movement is open to anyone, including non-Muslims.

Takeover of Malaysian Workers' Party

On 31 August 2015, Mohamad Sabu announced GHB took over a dormant Malaysian political party, Malaysian Workers' Party after its attempt to form a new party called Parti Progresif Islam (PPI) was rejected by the Home Affairs Ministry. [3]

Rebranding to National Trust Party

Malaysian Workers Party members approved the change of its name to National Trust Party or Parti Amanah Negara (AMANAH) in an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on 8 September 2015. AMANAH was officially launched on 16 September 2015 at national level, while it was still awaiting the approval of the Registrar of Societies (RoS). AMANAH is taking over and rebranding the Workers' Party into a new political party spearheaded by progressive leaders, who have left PAS. [4] The new logo and flag was also unveiled at its official launch on that day. [5]

Salahuddin Ayub Malaysian politician

Datuk Seri Salahuddin bin Ayub is a Malaysian politician who served as the Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from May 2018 to his resignation and the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Pulai since May 2018, Kubang Kerian from March 2004 to May 2013 and Member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Simpang Jeram since May 2018. He is currently Deputy President of National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of PH opposition coalition, under President Mohamad Sabu.

Muhammad Husin was the Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Pasir Puteh constituency in Kelantan from 2008 to 2013. He sat in Parliament as a member of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition. After leaving Parliament he joined 'Parti Ummah Sejahtera Malaysia', a PAS splinter movement formed out of concerns that the party was being insufficiently cooperative with its coalition allies, the Democratic Action Party and the People's Justice Party. In 2015, he joined Parti Amanah Negara (AMANAH), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) new opposition coalition.

Datuk Wira Mohd Hatta bin Md. Ramli is a Malaysian politician who served as the Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and former Minister Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lumut since May 2018 and Kuala Krai from March 2008 to May 2018. He is a member and Secretary-General of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of PH opposition coalition and was a member, Treasurer, Elections Director and Central Committee Member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a former component party of the former Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition coalition. Mohamad Sabu Malaysian politician

Mohamad bin Sabu, commonly known as Mat Sabu, is a Malaysian politician who served as the Minister of Defence in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from May 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Raja since May 2018, Kuala Kedah from November 1999 to March 2004, Kubang Kerian from April 1995 to November 1999 and Nilam Puri from October 1990 to April 1995. He has also served as the founding and 1st President of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the PH opposition coalition and rebranded from the Malaysian Workers' Party (PPPM) after it was taken over by the Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) led by him which left the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) in 2015 thanks to their ideological differences with the PAS leaders, since 2015. He also served as Deputy President of PAS, a former component party of the former Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Barisan Alternatif (BA) opposition coalitions, from 2011 to 2015. He was elected to the party deputy presidency in 2011, running on a moderate platform against the conservative incumbent Nasharudin Mat Isa. He had also served as the party Vice-President prior to his election as the party Deputy President. He was the first non-alim elected to the party leadership or deputy presidency in over 25 years.

National Trust Party (Malaysia) Political party in Malaysia

The National Trust Party, is a registered political party in Malaysia advocating a reformist strand of political Islam. The party was founded as the Malaysia Workers' Party before being handed over in August 2015 to Gerakan Harapan Baru, a group of progressive Islamist leaders of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party which lost in the June 2015 party election. This group of Islamists then redefined the Malaysia Workers' Party as an Islamic reformist party on 16 September 2015. The party currently has eleven elected Members of Parliament. It is one of the four component parties of the government coalition in Malaysia called Pakatan Harapan.

Pakatan Harapan Malaysian political coalition

The Alliance of Hope is a Malaysian political coalition which succeeded the Pakatan Rakyat coalition in 2015. At the federal level, it was the ruling coalition for 22 months from May 2018 when it won the 2018 Malaysian general election to February 2020 when Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime Minister in its administration resigned. It was established in September 2015 as an opposition political coalition against the then-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition that ruled the nation from its independence in August 1957 to its defeat in the 2018 Malaysian general election in May 2018 for almost 61 years. It is currently the largest political coalition with 90 seats in the Dewan Rakyat. While at the state level, it is the ruling coalition in three of the 13 states in the nation, which are Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. It also garners a two-thirds majority in the state legislative assemblies of Penang and Selangor.

Dato' Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah bin Raja Ahmad is a Malaysian politician who served as the Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as Senator since July 2018. He also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kuala Terengganu from May 2013 to May 2018. He is a member and State Chairman of Terengganu of the National Trust Party (AMANAH) and its coalition PH which is in opposition.

Mohamed Hanipa bin Maidin is a Malaysian politician who served as the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of legal affairs in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and former Minister Liew Vui Keong from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sepang since May 2013. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the PH opposition coalition.

Adly Zahari Malaysian politician

Haji Adly Zahari is a Malaysian politician who served as the 11th Chief Minister of Melaka from May 2018 to March 2020. He has served as Member of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Bukit Katil since May 2018. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. In AMANAH, he has served as its Vice-President since September 2021 and State Chairman of Melaka since August 2017. He was a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) prior to joining its new splinter party AMANAH in 2015.

Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Kadir bin Sheikh Fadzir is a Malaysian politician and former seven-term Member of Parliament (MP) of Malaysia representing Kulim-Bandar Baharu constituency in the state of Kedah. He also formerly served as the Minister of Information (1999–2006), Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism (1997–2004) in the Cabinet of Malaysia.

2018 Negeri Sembilan state election

Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus Malaysian politician

Hasanuddin bin Mohd Yunus is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hulu Langat since May 2018. He is also Vice-President of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.

Perikatan Nasional Political coalition in Malaysia

The National Alliance is a political coalition composed of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), Homeland Solidarity Party, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and later Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (GERAKAN). The establishment of this party was induced by the Muhyiddin cabinet on 10 March 2020. This coalition previously preceded by the Malaysian Party Alliance Association or also known as the Persatuan Perikatan Parti Malaysia (PPPM). This party later was legalised and confirmed by Registrar of Society (RoS) as a 'political coalition party' known as Perikatan Nasional (National Alliance). As of 13 August 2021, Perikatan Nasional controls 50 seats, with support of another 50 MPs. The coalition was the ruling government of Malaysia from March 2020 to August 2021.
