The Gerakan Riau Merdeka (Indonesian : Gerakan Riau Merdeka), or Riau Independence Movement, is a political movement in the Riau Province of Indonesia. It advocates for the independence of Riau from Indonesia, emphasizing local nationalism and self-determination. The movement was initiated by Tabrani Rab and officially declared on March 15, 1999. [1] Despite challenges, GRM continues to operate, with its headquarters in Pekanbaru, Riau. The ideology of the movement is rooted in Riau nationalism, reflecting a long-standing sentiment among certain groups in the region. [2]

In the Malay archipelago, this term had acquired the meaning of a freed slave. The term is also used in other Indonesian languages.

The West New Guinea dispute (1950–1962), also known as the West Irian dispute, was a diplomatic and political conflict between the Netherlands and Indonesia over the territory of Dutch New Guinea. While the Netherlands had ceded sovereignty over most of the Dutch East Indies to Indonesia on 27 December 1949 following an independence struggle, it retained control over its colony on the western half of New Guinea. Tomegorō Yoshizumi was a Japanese spy and journalist who defected to Indonesia during the National Revolution. Born in Tōhoku region during the late stages of the Meiji period, in his early twenties he joined the Japanese expatriate community in the Dutch East Indies. Yoshizumi recruited locals for the Japanese spy ring in Java and Sulawesi, while also taking up employment for local Japanese newspapers. He was a noted follower of Japanese nationalism, and reportedly endorsed a "new order in East Asia". Although a civilian, he was inducted into the Imperial Japanese Navy, earning an officer's rank.
The Kaaba Youth Movement, abbreviated as GPK, is the youth wing of United Development Party (PPP).
