Ghazi Nasr Al-Din is a Lebanese Venezuelan who served as charge d'affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy in Damascus,Syria and is accused of assisting Hezbollah.
Ghazi Nasr Al-Din was born on 13 December 1962 in Beirut,Lebanon. [1]
In 2000,shortly after Hugo Chávez came to power,Nasr Al-Din immigrated into Venezuela. [2] Nasr Al-Din eventually established a relationship with aspiring Venezuelan politician Tareck El Aissami. [2] He was then made the Charge d' Affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy in Damascus,Syria. [2] In 2008,he was appointed as Director of Political Aspects at the Venezuelan Embassy in Lebanon. [3]
While serving as a Venezuelan diplomat in Venezuela and making connections through a local Islamic group in Venezuela,Nasr Al-Din allegedly established ties to various entities in the Middle East,including the terrorist organization Hezbollah. [3] The Government of the United States has accused Nasr Al-Din of having "counseled Hizballah donors on fundraising efforts and has provided donors with specific information on bank accounts where the donors' deposits would go directly to Hizballah" and had "met with senior Hizballah officials in Lebanon to discuss operational issues,as well as facilitated the travel of Hizballah members to and from Venezuela". [3] Allegations also involved an event in January 2006,where "Nasr al Din facilitated the travel of two Hizballah representatives to the Lebanese Parliament to Caracas to solicit donations for Hizballah and to announce the opening of a Hizballah-sponsored community center and office in Venezuela",later assisting the travel of more Hezbollah members to Iran. [3] [4] Nasr Al-Din had also met with Walid Makled,a Venezuelan drug trafficker,doing "business" with him. [5]
Following the 2006 appointment of Nicolás Maduro,Venezuela's future president,to be Venezuela's Minister of Foreign Affairs,Nasr Al-Din's diplomatic workload increased as he delivered multiple Venezuelan visas to Lebanese citizens in 2007. [6] In 2008,the United States Department of the Treasury placed Nasr Al-Din on its terrorism blacklist citing his assistance of Hezbollah. [3] [6]
A 22 August 2010 meeting in Caracas was also planned by Nasr Al-Din,which involved Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez,Hamas Supreme Leader Khaled Mashal,a Hezbollah leader and Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine Ramadan Abdullah Mohammad Shallah. [5] In 2015,the FBI listed him as a person of interest due to his connections to Hezbollah. [6]
Nasr Al-Din brothers,Abdallah and Oday,both reside in Isla Margarita,Venezuela. [2] Abdallah Nasr Al-Din allegedly launders money for Hezbollah on the island while Oday recruits chavistas to join Bolivarian Circles and travel to Iran for training. [2]
Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary group. Hezbollah's paramilitary wing is the Jihad Council,and its political wing is the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc party in the Lebanese Parliament. Its armed strength was assessed to be equivalent to that of a medium-sized army in 2016.
Imad Fayez Mughniyeh,also known by his nom de guerre al-Hajj Radwan,was a Lebanese militant leader who was the founding member of Lebanon's Islamic Jihad Organization and number two in Hezbollah's leadership. Information about Mughniyeh is limited,but he is believed to have been Hezbollah's chief of staff and understood to have overseen Hezbollah's military,intelligence,and security apparatuses. He was one of the main founders of Hezbollah in the 1980s,and was described as a skilled military tactician and highly elusive figure. He was often referred to as an ‘untraceable ghost’.
The attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires was a suicide bombing attack on the building of the Israeli embassy of Argentina,located in Buenos Aires,which was carried out on 17 March 1992. 29 civilians were killed in the attack and 242 additional civilians were injured.

Tareck Zaidan El Aissami Maddah is a Venezuelan politician,who served as the vice president of Venezuela from 2017 to 2018. He served as Minister of Industries and National Production since 14 June 2018,and as Minister of Petroleum from 27 April 2020 until 20 March 2023. He previously was Minister of the Interior and Justice from 2008 to 2012,Governor of Aragua from 2012 to 2017,and the vice president of Venezuela from 2017 to 2018. While holding that office,El Aissami faced allegations of participating in corruption,money laundering and drug trafficking. In 2019,U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) added El Aissami to the ICE Most Wanted List,listed by the Homeland Security Investigations unit. El Aissami,who was among the power brokers in Nicolás Maduro's government,resigned on 20 March 2023 during a corruption probe. He was arrested by the Venezuelan prosecutor's office on charges of treason,money laundering and criminal association.
The level of corruption in Venezuela is very high by world standards and is prevalent throughout many levels of Venezuelan society. Discovery of oil in Venezuela in the early 20th century worsened political corruption. The large amount of corruption and mismanagement in the country has resulted in severe economic difficulties,part of the crisis in Venezuela. A 2014 Gallup poll found that 75% of Venezuelans believed that corruption was widespread throughout the Venezuelan government. Discontent with corruption was cited by demonstrators as one of the reasons for the 2014 and 2017 Venezuelan protests.

Venezuela has been a path to the United States for cocaine originating in Colombia,through Central America and Mexico and Caribbean countries such as Haiti,the Dominican Republic,and Puerto Rico. It is the regional branch of the Ba'ath Party. The leadership has been disputed since 2015;however,Fayez Shukr was the party leader from 2006 to 2015,when he succeeded Sayf al-Din Ghazi,who succeeded Assem Qanso.
Mustafa Badreddine was a Lebanese militant leader and both the cousin and brother-in-law of Imad Mughniyeh. He was nicknamed Dhu al-Fiqar referring to the legendary sword of Ali. His death was seen as one of the biggest blows in the Hezbollah leadership.
Hashem Safieddine was a Lebanese Shia cleric who served as the head of Hezbollah's Executive Council from 2001 until his assassination in 2024. A maternal cousin of Hassan Nasrallah,Safieddine was generally considered the "number two" in Hezbollah for many years. In 2017,he was declared a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the United States and was also designated as a terrorist by several of the Arab Gulf states. Following Nasrallah's assassination on 27 September 2024,during the Israel–Hezbollah conflict,Safieddine was widely considered his likely successor. On 3 October 2024,Safieddine was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in Dahieh,south of Beirut. His death in the strike was confirmed later that month.
Project Cassandra was an effort led by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to undercut Hezbollah funding from illicit drug sources in South America. Launched in 2008,the project was investigating the terrorist organization's funding. The DEA,Eurojust,and Europol found that Hezbollah was increasingly involved with drug trafficking and organized crime as a method of funding its activities. The investigation was tracking how hundreds of millions of dollars were being laundered from North America through Europe and West Africa to Lebanon and into Hezbollah's coffers.
"Members of Hezbollah established business relationships with South American drug cartels responsible for supplying large quantities of cocaine to the European and United States drug markets. An intricate network of money couriers collect and transport millions of euros in drug proceeds from Europe to the Middle East. The currency is then paid in Colombia to drug traffickers using the Hawala disbursement system. A large portion of the drug proceeds is laundered through Lebanon [facilitated by the now-defunct Lebanese Canadian Bank and other Lebanese nationals],where it is then used for the benefit of Hezbollah to purchase weapons."

Amer Mohamed Akil Rada is a Lebanese-Colombian Hezbollah operative. According to the United States and Argentina,Rada is a senior member of Hezbollah's External Security Organization and was an operational member involved in the 1994 AMIA bombing that killed 85 people.
The governments of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro have provided economic,political and military support to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) and the National Liberation Army (ELN). The support of Colombian leftist guerrillas has continued during the government of Nicolás Maduro. Terrorist organizations operating in Lebanon include Hezbollah,Palestinian militias,and other radical Sunni Muslim organizations. The government was reported to not be in control of "all regions" of the country which includes many refugee camps and its borders with Israel and Syria.
