Gideon Mendel (born 31 August 1959) [1] is a South African photographer, based in London. His work engages with contemporary social issues of global concern. It was his work as a 'struggle photographer' during the final years of apartheid in the 1980s that first brought attention to his work. [2]

Life and work

Born in Johannesburg in 1959, Mendel studied psychology and African history at the University of Cape Town. He began photographing in the 1980s during the final years of apartheid and produced a number of bodies of work documenting the resultant societal conditions and political climate in South Africa.

In the early 1990s he moved to London, from where he has continued to respond to social issues experienced globally. He travels extensively in order to do so, which is reflected by his images focusing on people and societies from countries all over the world. Most of his projects are developed over long periods of time. Video has increasingly become a part if his practice, and he also employs collaborative photography as a means of interacting with his subjects.

Mendel has worked for National Geographic, Fortune, Geo, The Independent magazine, The Guardian Weekend magazine, The Sunday Times magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, L'Express, Stern and Rolling Stone.

His first book, A Broken Landscape: HIV & AIDS in Africa, was published in 2001. Since then he has produced a number of photographic advocacy projects, working with charities and campaigning organizations including The Global Fund, Médecins Sans Frontières, Treatment Action Campaign, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, ActionAid, the Terrence Higgins Trust, Shelter, Leonard Cheshire Disability, UNICEF and Concern Worldwide.

Drowning World

Since 2007, Mendel has been working on Drowning World, an art and advocacy project about flooding. [3] [4] [5] Shortlisted for the Prix Pictet prize, it is his personal response to climate change.

Mendel started the project after travelling to the UK, and then India to document the damage caused by floods a few weeks apart from each other. He was struck by the "contrasting effects of the flooding, and the shared vulnerability of their victims". [6] He describes the project as "my attempt to explore the effects of climate change in an intimate way, taking us beyond faceless statistics and into the individual experiences of its victims." Since beginning the project, he has documented flood damage and the impact of people living in areas affected by floods in countries including Haiti, Pakistan, Australia, Thailand, Nigeria, Germany and the Philippines. Central to the narrative of the work are the submerged portraits. The subjects' flooded homes are often used as locations, creating a disconcertingly altered environment. [7] The full body of work consists of these portraits, as well as two further series. Flood Lines documents the impact of floodwaters of interior spaces, and Water Marks records the changes left by flood waters left on personal photographs of the victims, which Mendel photographs and collects.

The work combines photography with video pieces. Using footage from his trips, Mendel has collaborated with video makers in order to compose a series of short films. The videos accompany the photographs in the series.

HIV

One of the major focuses of his work is the issue of HIV/AIDS. [8] Mendel began documenting HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa in the early 1990s. While awareness about the disease was growing rapidly at the time, antiretroviral treatment (ART) was still very difficult to access for many of the continent's poorest. As a result, the disease was having a very destructive impact on communities across the sub-continent. After covering AIDS in these areas, Mendel started to develop what has been a lifelong focus in his work.

In 1993 Mendel's photographs documented the lives of four patients with HIV at the Middlesex Hospital in London. He aimed to show them as people with lives and relationships. [9] As well as a book (The Ward, 2017) there was an exhibition of some of the photographs in the Fitzrovia Chapel within the hospital. During this project he met a nurse, Sarah, who became his own long-term partner. [10] [11] [12] [13]

The ongoing chapter of his work on AIDS, Through Positive Eyes, is a collaborative project with the UCLA Art and Global Health Center. [14] The project works with subjects located in seven cities around the globe, all of whom are HIV positive. The organisation describes the project as telling the "story of HIV/AIDS in the fourth decade of the epidemic" when access to treatment is "far from universal". [15] Developed by Davide Gere at the UCLA, the workshops that form part of the project are led by fellow photographer Crispin Hughes. In this body of work, Mendel's role has shifted from photographer to enabler, handing the camera over to HIV-positive people, with whom he works in order to document their stories.

Apartheid

Mendel belonged to part of a generation of "struggle photographers", committed to documenting the conflict and political upheavals of the 1980s in South Africa. Employed as a news photographer, it was through covering these circumstances that he began his career.

Mendel has produced a number of bodies of work, through which he attempts to make sense of apartheid, and its continuous effect on South Africa and its people, most notably Living in Yeoville, a film that was commissioned by Okwui Enwezor for the Rise and Fall of Apartheid exhibition. [16]

The Prix Pictet is an international award in photography. It was founded in 2008 by the Geneva-based Pictet Group with the mandate to use the power of photography to communicate messages about sustainability to a global audience. Its goal is to uncover photography of the highest order, applied to current social and environmental challenges. With the participation of over 4,700 photographers, the prize is judged by an independent jury and carries a prize of CHF 100,000. Since 2008 the ten cycles of the Prix Pictet have been shown in more than 100 exhibitions across 25 countries with visitor numbers of over 550,000. The ten Prix Pictet winners are Benoit Aquin, Nadav Kander, Mitch Epstein, Luc Delahaye, Michael Schmidt, Valérie Belin, Richard Mosse, Joana Choumali, Sally Mann and Gauri Gill.

Sandro Miller, known professionally as Sandro, is an American photographer. He has worked with actor John Malkovich.

William John Monk was a South African, known for his photographs of a Cape Town nightclub between 1967 and 1969, during apartheid. In 2012 a posthumous book was published, Billy Monk: Nightclub Photographs.

Eric Miller is a professional photographer based in South Africa. Miller was born in Cape Town but spent his childhood in Johannesburg. After studying psychology and working in the corporate world for several years, Miller was driven by the injustices of apartheid to use his hobby, photography, to document opposition to apartheid by becoming a full-time photographer.

Afrapix was a collective agency of amateur and professional photographers who opposed Apartheid in South Africa and documented South Africa in the 1980s. The group was established in 1982 and dissolved itself in 1991.

Gisèle Wulfsohn was a South African photographer. Wulfsohn was a newspaper, magazine, and freelance photographer specialising on portrait, education, health and gender issues. She was known for documenting various HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns. She died in 2011 from lung cancer.

Chris Boot is a British photography curator, book publisher, and has worked in a variety of other roles related to photography. He was director of London’s Photo Co-op, director of the London and New York offices of Magnum Photos, editorial director at Phaidon Press, founder of Chris Boot Ltd. a photography book publisher, and is now executive director of Aperture Foundation. In these roles he has commissioned, edited or published a number of noteworthy photography books.

Darcy Marie Padilla is an American narrative photographer and photojournalist who specializes in long-term narrative projects centering on social issues such as urban poverty, drug addiction and HIV/AIDS. She was a Guggenheim Fellow and the recipient of a W. Eugene Smith Award and three World Press Photo awards. She is best known for "The Julie Project" and its related series "Family Love", which both follow an impoverished young woman from 1993 until her death in 2010. Padilla has been a faculty member at University of Wisconsin–Madison since 2018.

Joana Choumali is a freelance photographer based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. She uses photography to explore issues of identity and the diversity of African cultures.

Will Burrard-Lucas, is a British wildlife photographer and entrepreneur. He is known for developing devices, such as BeetleCam and camera traps, which enable him to capture close-up photographs of wildlife.

Thabiso Sekgala was a South African photographer. His work was about "land, peoples’ movement, identity and the notion of home". Sekgala's photography was published in a book, Paradise (2014) and exhibited posthumously at the Hayward Gallery in London.

Brian Griffin is a British photographer. His portraits of 1980s pop musicians lead to him being named the "photographer of the decade" by The Guardian in 1989. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Arts Council, British Council, Victoria and Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery, London.

Mike Abrahams is a British documentary photographer and photojournalist who is based in London. He is best known for his photographs documenting the lives of ordinary people, particularly his work in Northern Ireland and on Christian pilgrimage around the world.

Awoiska van der Molen is a Dutch photographer, living in Amsterdam. She has produced three books of black and white landscape photographs, made in remote places. Van der Molen has been shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize and the Prix Pictet, and her work is held in the collections of the Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Ala Kheir is a Sudanese photographer, cinematographer and mechanical engineer. He became known as one of the founders of the Sudanese Photographers Group in Khartoum in 2009 and through international exhibitions of his photographs, as well as for networking and training for photographers in Africa.

Craig Easton is a British photographer who lives in The Wirral and works on long-term social documentary projects that deal with the representation of communities in the North of England. He has made work about women working in the UK fish processing industry; about the inter-generational nature of poverty and economic hardship in Northern England; about social deprivation, housing, unemployment and immigration in Blackburn; and about how the situation in which young people throughout the UK live, influences their aspirations.
