Early life and career
Service in Congress
English's first job in politics was as a staff member for the majority caucus of the California State Assembly. Later,he worked as a legislative staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives. After serving as the executive director of the Oklahoma Democratic Party (from 1969 to 1973),English was elected as a Democrat to Congress representing Oklahoma's 6th Congressional District (in November 1974). English was re-elected to Congress nine times. He was one of the most conservative Democrats in the chamber,which was not surprising given the nature of his district. It spanned from the Oklahoma Panhandle to northeastern Oklahoma City,including along the way some of the most rural and conservative territory in Oklahoma.
While in Congress,English served on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Government Operations. He also was the Chairman of the Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control.
In addition,English chaired the Government Information,Justice and Agriculture Subcommittee where he won approval for the military to use aircraft and radar to assist Custom agents in the interdiction of drug smugglers. During the 1985–86 term,English was instrumental in securing a $20 million federal hub in Oklahoma City to assist in the war on drugs which is currently located at the Will Rogers Airport.
In 1993,Glenn was also effective in halting a plan to reduce the work of the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). In a series of meetings between the Committee on Agriculture and the White House,Glenn successfully interceded between the two organizations to enhance REA's status and the quality of life for rural America.
English resigned from the House on January 7,1994,and was succeeded in Congress by Frank Lucas,a Republican.
National Rural Electric Cooperative
Upon his departure from Congress in 1994,English became CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA),based in Arlington,Va. NRECA is the national trade association for the Nation's 900-plus locally owned,consumer-controlled,non-profit electric cooperatives which currently delivers electricity to 42 million Americans in 47 states. On May 5,2010,after serving as chief executive officer for NRECA for 16 years,English was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame at the National Press Club in Washington,DC.
Blanche Lambert Lincoln is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Arkansas from 1999 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected to the Senate in 1998; she was the first woman elected to the Senate from Arkansas since Hattie Caraway in 1932 and youngest woman ever elected to the Senate at age 38. She previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Arkansas's 1st congressional district from 1993 to 1997.
Richard Norman "Doc" Hastings is an American politician and member of the Republican Party who served as the U.S. representative for Washington's 4th congressional district from 1995 until his retirement in 2015. The district includes much of central Washington including the Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Moses Lake. The most conservative Republican in Washington's Congressional delegation, he chaired the House Committee on Ethics from 2005 to 2007 and chaired the House Committee on Natural Resources from 2011 to his leaving office.
Ralph Moody Hall was an American politician who served as the United States representative for Texas's 4th congressional district from 1981 to 2015. He was first elected in 1980, and was the chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology from 2011 to 2013. He was also a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. In 2004, he switched to the Republican Party after having been a member of the Democratic Party for more than 50 years.
James David Matheson is an American politician who served as a United States Representative from Utah from 2001 to 2015. He represented Utah's 2nd district from 2001 to 2013 and its 4th district from 2013 to 2015 as a member of the Democratic Party. While in office, he was Utah's only congressional Democrat, and his district was one of the most Republican-leaning districts to be represented by a Democrat.
Charles Walter Stenholm was an American businessman and Democratic Party politician from a rural district of the state of Texas. After establishing himself as owner-operator of a large cotton farm, he entered politics and was elected to Congress in his first run for office. Stenholm was a Democratic Party member of the United States House of Representatives for 13 terms, representing Texas's 17th congressional district from 1979 to 2005.
Jo Ann Emerson is an American politician who was the U.S. representative for Missouri's 8th congressional district from 1996 to 2013. The district consists of Southeast and South Central Missouri and includes the Bootheel, the Lead Belt and the Ozarks. Emerson is a member of the Republican Party. On January 22, 2013, Emerson resigned her seat in Congress to become the president and chief executive officer of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. She served as CEO until August 2015.
Wesley Wade Watkins is an American politician from the state of Oklahoma. Watkins is a retired member of the United States House of Representatives where he had represented Oklahoma's 3rd congressional district for 14 years as a Democrat and then for six years as a Republican.
Charles Grandison Rose III was an American attorney and politician and who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for North Carolina's 7th congressional district from 1973 to 1997.
David Daniel Boren is an American businessman and politician who is the Secretary of Commerce for the Chickasaw Nation, based in Oklahoma. He is a retired American politician, who served as the U.S. representative for Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district from 2005 to 2013. The district included most of the eastern part of the state outside of Tulsa. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He also served as a State Representative in the 28th district of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
Robert Selmer Bergland was an American politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota's 7th congressional district from 1971 to 1977, and he served as United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1977 until 1981, during the Carter administration.
David Keith McCurdy is an American lobbyist, lawyer, and former politician who was the Democratic U.S. Representative from Oklahoma's 4th congressional district, in office from 1981 to 1995. Described as a moderate or conservative Democrat, McCurdy was a chair the centrist Democratic Leadership Council. In 1994, he ran for the U.S. Senate, but lost to fellow Representative Jim Inhofe.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party is an Oklahoma political party affiliated with the Democratic Party. Along with the Oklahoma Republican Party, it is one of the two major parties in the state.

Glenn William "GT" Thompson Jr. is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania's 15th congressional district since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he was first elected to Congress in 2008 for the state's 5th congressional district; Thompson was redistricted to the 15th congressional district in the 2018 election by an order of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Since 2023, he has chaired the House Agriculture Committee. Thompson is set to become the dean of the Pennsylvania's Congressional delegation in 2025 following the defeat of Senator Bob Casey Jr.
Clyde A. Wheeler was an American congressional relations expert, lobbyist, and member of the White House staff. After leaving the White House staff, he returned to Oklahoma, where he settled in Tulsa and became a lobbyist for Sun Oil Company. He retired from Sun in 1984 and returned to his ranch in his home town of Laverne, Oklahoma. He continued to do part-time work as a consultant for two Washington law firms until 1988. He died in Laverne in 2013.
The National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC) is a member-owned nonprofit cooperative that provides financial products to America's rural electric cooperative network. CFC was established in 1969 to raise funds from the capital markets to supplement the loan programs for electric cooperatives offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS), previously Rural Electrification Administration (REA).
Mark Stephen Critz is an American politician and former U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district, having served from a special election in May 2010 until January 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party. The district during his tenure, which was located in the southwestern portion of the state, stretched from Johnstown to the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh.
Frank Dean Lucas is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Oklahoma's 3rd congressional district since 2003, having previously represented the 6th district from 1994 to 2003. A member of the Republican Party, Lucas has chaired the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology since 2023. His district, numbered as the 6th from 1994 to 2003, is Oklahoma's largest congressional district and one of the largest in the nation that does not cover an entire state. It covers 34,088.49 square miles and stretches from the Panhandle to the fringes of the Tulsa suburbs, covering almost half of the state's land mass. Lucas is the dean of Oklahoma's congressional delegation.
Kendra Suzanne Horn is an American lawyer and politician who served as the U.S. representative for Oklahoma's 5th congressional district from 2019 to 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, her district included almost all of Oklahoma City.
NicoleJai Budzinski born March 11, 1977) is an American trade unionist and politician. She has served as the U.S. representative for Illinois's 13th congressional district since 2023, and is a member of the Democratic Party.
