Traditionally, three films have been nominated each year with exceptions in the early 1980s and 2002 when there were only two nominees; in 1999, when there were four nominees. Beginning with the 92nd Academy Awards, five films were nominated.

It was chosen as one of the 39 songs to be eligible for nominations at the Best Original Song at the 84th Academy Awards, but failed to enter the final list of nominations. Byrne won the Best Original Score category at the 9th Irish Film & Television Awards.
Charlie is the soundtrack to the 2015 Malayalam film of the same name directed by Martin Prakkat starring Dulquer Salmaan, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Aparna Gopinath. The soundtrack featured eight songs composed by Gopi Sundar with lyrics written by Rafeeq Ahamed and Santhosh Varma. Six of them were released as an album on 7 December 2015 through Muzik 247 label, while two of the songs—"Chithirathira" and "Chundari Penne" —released separately.
Ennu Ninte Moideen is the soundtrack to the 2015 film of the same name directed by R. S. Vimal. Based on the real life story of B. P. Moideen and Kanchanamala which happened in Mukkam, Kozhikode in the 1960s, the film starred Prithviraj Sukumaran and Parvathy Thiruvothu as the principal characters. M. Jayachandran, Ramesh Narayan and Gopi Sundar composed the 10-song soundtrack, the latter of whom also composed the background score. Satyam Audios released the soundtrack on 29 August 2015.
