Graeme Christopher Hughes (born 6 December 1955) is an Australian sportsman turned broadcaster. He is the last man to have played both rugby league and cricket for New South Wales. [2] His father Noel Hughes played cricket for Worcestershire in the 1950s.
Hughes was born in Stanmore,New South Wales,Australia.
As a sportsman,Hughes found most success in rugby league,playing for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as well as representing his state at the age of 19. [3] Hughes was unlucky not to be selected for the Australian side to go on the 1978 Kangaroo tour. He was a key member of the Bulldogs "Entertainers" era playing second-row in the Grand Final loss against St George and starred the following year in Canterbury's 18–4 victory against Easts in 1980. Hughes retired in 1982 after a series of injuries to focus on his media career.
In 2008,Hughes announced he was running for a position on the Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club Board of Directors alongside former players Andrew Farrar,Paul Dunn and Barry Ward. Hughes missed out by 32 votes.
His brothers Mark and Garry played for Canterbury,as did his cousin Kevin Moore and nephews Glen,Steven and Corey. His uncle is former rugby league administrator Peter 'Bullfrog' Moore.
Hughes appeared in 20 first-class and three List A games,all for New South Wales between the 1975–76 and 1978–79 seasons. He never produced a spectacular batting performance,his top score being the 65 he hit against Victoria at the MCG in his final season. [4]
After his retirement from playing,Hughes moved into the media. He worked on Channel 10's rugby league coverage first being a sideline eye then became the networks play by play caller in 1988 alongside Ian Maurice and Rex Mossop until the end of 1991 when Ten lost the rights to Channel 9.
He also led Ten's commentary team for the English leg of the 1990 Kangaroo tour alongside David Morrow,including all three Ashes tests between Australia and Great Britain (the ABC covered the two tests against France). He also had a stint as Channel 7 commentator for Australian Tests in 1992–93 against Great Britain and New Zealand,before moving to New Zealand to call the Auckland Warriors matches in 1995 for Sky NZ,He hosted Ten Network's coverage of the Seoul Olympics. He also hosted Rugby League programs on Channel 7 as well as appearing on former weekend sports show Sportswatch. Hughes now co-hosts the Talkin' Sport radio show on Sydney station 2SM. [5]
On 31 July 2016,Hughes commentated the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles against Newcastle Knights game for the NRL's retro round on Fox Sports Australia. [6] The following year,Hughes returned to commentate the NRL's retro round game between South Sydney and St. George Illawarra at the Sydney Cricket Ground. [7]
Brett "Noddy" Kimmorley is an Australian rugby league coach and former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s,2000s,&early 2010’s. A New South Wales interstate and Australian international representative halfback,he last played for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs of the NRL. He previously played for five other clubs:Newcastle Knights,Hunter Mariners,Melbourne Storm,Northern Eagles and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Kimmorley also represented Country NSW four times and New South Wales ten times as well as playing 15 times for his country including the 2000 World Cup. He also played two Super League Tests. He retired at the end of the 2010 NRL season.
Warren James Boland is a former science teacher and professional footballer with the Western Suburbs Magpies &Balmain Tigers. He presented weekend radio shows called "Weekends with Warren" on ABC Local Radio stations across Queensland,Australia,broadcasting from the studios of 612 ABC Brisbane. Boland's radio broadcasts could be heard from 9 am–midday on Saturdays and from 10 am–midday on Sundays. Warren's contract at 612ABC was not renewed at the end of 2013 and he was replaced in the lineup.
Terence John Lamb,also nicknamed "Baa",is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He played 350 games,with the Western Suburbs (1980–1983) and Canterbury (1984–1996).
Stephen Charles Mortimer,also nicknamed "Turvey",is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played as a halfback. Mortimer played a Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs club record 272 first-grade games between 1976 and 1988,winning four premierships with the club during the 1980s. Mortimer's two younger brothers,Peter and Chris,also played for the club.
Robert Fulton,also nicknamed "Bozo",was an Australian international rugby league footballer,coach and later commentator. Fulton played,coached,selected for and has commentated on the game with great success at the highest levels and has been named amongst Australia's greatest rugby league players of the 20th century. As a player Fulton won three premierships with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in the 1970s,the last as captain. He represented the Australian national side on thirty-five occasions,seven times as captain. He had a long coaching career at the first grade level,taking Manly to premiership victory in 1987 and 1996. He coached the Australian national team in thirty-nine Tests. He was a New South Wales State selector and a national selector. He was a radio commentator with 2GB at the time of his death in 2021,aged 73. In 1981,he was selected as one of the initial four post-war "Immortals" of the Australian game and,in 2008,he was named in Australia's team of the century.
Nate Myles is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s,he last played for the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League. A Queensland State of Origin and Australia national representative forward,he previously played for Canterbury-Bankstown,Sydney Roosters,Gold Coast Titans and Manly-Warringah.
Brett Papworth played first grade rugby league for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters in the New South Wales Rugby League competition. He had formerly been an Australian rugby union international. His position of choice was usually at centre.
Andrew Ryan is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s. An Australian international and New South Wales State of Origin representative forward,he played his club football in the National Rugby League for the Parramatta Eels and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,winning the 2004 NRL premiership with the club and becoming their captain.
George Peponis is a Greek Australian company director and former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative hooker,he played in the NSWRFL Premiership for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,with whom he won the 1980 Grand Final. He also captained the Bulldogs and New South Wales,and played in eight Test matches for Australia between 1978 and 1980,captaining the side on five consecutive occasions between 1979 and 1980.
Darren Smith is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played for the Australian national side and also Queensland in the State of Origin. His club football career was spent with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,Brisbane Broncos and St. Helens. He is the brother of fellow Maroon and international,Jason Smith.
Robert James McCarthy MBE is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer and coach. He played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs,Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,New South Wales and for the Australian national side.
