Grahamtown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States, located at the southeast edge of Frostburg. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 364. [4] It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Etymology

The town takes its name from Curtis M Graham, who married Susanna Wright, Granddaughter Of Henry Wright a colonial settler of The area. Curtis owned a farmhouse at this site, surrounded by several small service buildings in the 1880s. A fire gutted the farmhouse in 1995, leaving only an uninhabited shell. Grahamtown is also known as Wright's Crossing, marking the point where Maryland Route 36 crosses Welsh Hill. Wright's Crossing gets its name from The Wright Farm, a large holding which was owned by Henry Wright a colonial settler of Allegany County. This farm, the centerpoint Of Wright's Crossing, was originally part of a large colonial estate called Walnut Level. [6] [7]

Shaft is a census-designated place (CDP) corresponding to the unincorporated community of Borden Shaft in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 235. It is located south of Frostburg, in the Georges Creek Valley. It lies at an elevation of 1,795 feet (547 m). Borden, or Borden Shaft, was the site of a major deep mine in the valley. The principal owners of the mines were the Borden family of Massachusetts. Deep mines were unusual in the area, as most were drift mines in the Big Vein region. In 1907, the mine operator was H. and W. Hitchens Coal company. The C&P railroad delivered the windlass for the mine, then used its railroad crane to set it in place.
