The Grand Rapids Rise are an American professional indoor volleyball team based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. One of the seven charter members of the Pro Volleyball Federation, the Rise are set to begin play for the league's inaugural 2024 season. The Rise play their home games at Van Andel Arena.

History

On December 5, 2022, Grand Rapids was announced as the first city to get a Pro Volleyball Federation franchise for the league's inaugural season. Dan DeVos, majority owner of the National Basketball Association's Orlando Magic and American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and owner of the former Arena Football League team the Grand Rapids Rampage, was announced as the new team's owner. [1] The Rise name, logo and colors were announced on April 14, 2023. [2]

Their inaugural match was played against the Columbus Fury at Van Andel Arena. The Rise swept the Fury, winning by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-19. The game was a sellout, with an attendance of 7,805. [3]

Van Andel Arena is a multi-purpose arena situated in the Heartside district of Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. The arena attracted over five million patrons in its first 5 years, 1996–2001. It serves as the home of the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G League. It will also be the home of the Grand Rapids Rise of the Pro Volleyball Federation starting in January 2024. Seating 10,834 for ice hockey and up to 13,184 for concerts, Van Andel Arena is the fourth-largest arena in Michigan, as well as West Michigan's largest; only Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing, and Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, are larger.

Megan Eileen Courtney-Lush is an American indoor professional volleyball player for the Columbus Fury of the Pro Volleyball Federation and the United States women's national volleyball team. Courtney played outside hitter for the Penn State women's volleyball team, and won back to back national championships in 2013 and 2014. With the USA national team, she played at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix. She was named the best libero at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League. Sarah competed for the USA Volleyball Beach National Team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Sarah and partner Kelly Claes tied for 9th in their debut Olympics. At 24 and 25, Sponcil and Claes, respectively, were the youngest beach volleyball team to represent the USA since its inception as an Olympic sport in 1996.
