The Basketball Super League is a professional basketball based throughout Canada and the United States. The goal is to model the league after professional soccer and basketball leagues in Europe, by playing against teams in The Basketball League. [1] [2]

History

On June 18, 2022, the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) announced that The Basketball League President David Magley, a former NBL Commissioner, will work alongside Audley Stephenson, the current NBLC Commissioner in overseeing the growth of both leagues. [3]

For the 2021–22 season, the NBLC announced that they had agreed to inter-league series play with several teams from The Basketball League. The games played between the teams from the two leagues are included in their respective regular season standings for each league. [4]

On April 11, 2023, Dave Magley and announced the formation a new professional basketball league called the Basketball Super League is to begin on December 26, 2023. The league will consist of teams located in Canada and the United States. The KW Titans, London Lightning and the Sudbury Five from the National Basketball League of Canada would be the first three teams to join. . [5]

The National Basketball League of Canada was a Canadian professional men's minor league basketball organization. The NBL Canada was founded in 2011, when three existing Premier Basketball League teams joined with four new franchises for the league's inaugural season. The league changed in size multiple times and had four active teams in its final season, all in Ontario, but historically the NBLC had several located in the Atlantic provinces. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Dave Magley</span> American basketball player and coach

David John Magley is a retired American basketball player and coach. He is currently the president of The Basketball League after serving as commissioner of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). Prior to becoming an NBLC executive, Magley was head coach of Bradenton Christian School in Bradenton, Florida, for 11 years and then led the Brampton A's for two seasons. He played basketball at South Bend LaSalle High School. Following his senior year, Magley was named Indiana Mr. Basketball, beating Randy Wittman and Ted Kitchel for the award, and was selected to the Academic All-State and Parade All American teams. Dave was drafted with the fifth pick in the second round of the 1982 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his one NBA season, Dave appeared in fourteen games, recording a total of twelve points and ten rebounds. Magley also spent several years in the Continental Basketball Association for the Wyoming Wildcatters, Albany Patroons and Tampa Bay Thrillers.

The Windsor Express are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, competing in the Basketball Super League. The Express play their home games at the WFCU Centre.

The 2013–14 NBL Canada season was the third season of the National Basketball League of Canada. The regular season began on November 1, 2013. The regular season ended on Friday, February 28, 2014, and the playoffs began on Sunday, March 2, 2014 and ended on Thursday, April 17, 2014 with the Windsor Express defeating the Island Storm in seven games to win the 2014 NBLC Finals.

Tyrone Watson is a Canadian professional basketball player for the St. John's Edge of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). He attended New Mexico State University, where he represented the Aggies, and has competed with the Canadian youth national team in the past. Following graduation, Watson played a season with the Halifax Rainmen in the NBL Canada and, following a suspension, returned to the league with the Orangeville A's.

The 2015–16 NBL Canada season was the fifth season of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). The regular season began on December 26, 2015 and concluded on April 30, 2016. There were 40 total games played by each team, eight more than the previous year. The new expansion Niagara River Lions team are competing in their first season. The Halifax Hurricanes also began play, replacing the defunct Halifax Rainmen. During the offseason, the Mississauga Power folded to make way for Raptors 905 of the NBA Development League. Prior to the season, the league also enforced new policies to help improve its standard, including rules regarding sportsmanship, addressing the brawl that ended the 2015 NBL Canada Finals. The first regular season game featured the Island Storm and the Saint John Mill Rats.

The National Basketball League of Canada's Newcomer of the Year Award is an annual National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) award given since the 2012–13 season. It is earned by the best player who completed his first season in the league. It was first awarded to the London Lightning's Marvin Phillips, who went on to be named Finals Most Valuable Player in 2013. The most recent recipient is Jarius "JR" Holder of the Sudbury Five.

The 2018–19 NBL Canada season is the eighth season of the National Basketball League of Canada. The regular season ran from November 15, 2018, to March 31, 2019.

The 2019–20 NBL Canada season was the ninth season of the National Basketball League of Canada. The regular season was supposed to run from December 26, 2019, to April 23, 2020. However, on March 12, the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.

The 2022 TBL season is the fifth season of The Basketball League (TBL). The league expanded from 29 teams in the 2021 season to 44. For the 2022 season, the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) announced that they had agreed to inter-league series play with several teams from The Basketball League. The games played between the teams from the two leagues are included in their respective regular season standings for each league.

The 2023 TBL season is the sixth season of The Basketball League (TBL). The league expanded from 44 teams in the 2022 season to over 50 in 2023. The National Basketball League of Canada once again will partner with The Basketball League in joint league expansion.

The Montreal Tundra/Toundra de Montréal are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 2022, the team competes in The Basketball Super League (BSL) and play their home games at the Centre Pierre Charbonneau. It played its first game on March 4, 2023, a 121-117 win over the Virginia Valley Vipers.
