The South African National Basketball Club Championship is the national championship for premier basketball teams in South Africa. The winner of the national championship qualifies for the qualifying tournaments of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The privately-organised Basketball National League (BNL) is considered the de facto top level basketball league in the country, and has had a representative in some seasons.

The competition is organised by Basketball South Africa, the national basketball federation, since 2021.[ citation needed ]

The Cape Town Tigers won the 2021 and 2022 titles. [1] [2] The competition was not held in 2023, but returned in 2024. [3]

Format and rules

Each team is allowed to register a maximum of 20 players, of which 4 can be foreign players.[ citation needed ]

The Road to BAL, also known as the BAL Qualifying Tournaments, are the qualifying tournaments of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). While the main tournament is co-organised by FIBA and the NBA, the organization of the qualifiers is completely done by FIBA. The first qualifying rounds were held on 16 October 2019 during the 2021 BAL qualification.

The 2022 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 2, was the second season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The season began on 2 March 2022 and ended with the Finals on 28 May 2022. The group phase was played in the Dakar Arena in Dakar and the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. The playoffs and finals were played in the BK Arena in Kigali for a second year in a row.

Evans Ganapamo is a French-Central African professional basketball player for Bangui Sporting Club. He played college basketball at the University of New Orleans and Prairie View A&M University. Internationally, Ganapamo represents the Central African Republic national team.

Samkelo "Sam" Cele is a South African professional basketball player who plays for the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Born in Durban, he played college basketball for three different universities. Cele began playing professionally in 2023 and was an All-BAL First Team selection in 2024, and is a two-time BAL All-Defensive Team selection, all while playing for the Tigers. He played for The New York Knicks Summer League team in 2024

Mlungisi Florsheim "Flosh" Ngwenya is a South African professional basketball coach. He is the current head coach of the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball National League (BNL) and of the South Africa men's national team. He is the most successful coach in South African basketball history, with five national titles.

The 2025 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 5, will be the 5th season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). It will be the first season in which the playoffs of the league will be held outside of Rwanda.

Nkosinathi Sandile Sibanyoni is a South African professional basketball player for Urunani of the Burundian Basketball Championship, as well as for the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) and Basketball National League (BNL). Standing at 2.08 m, he plays as center and has also played for the South Africa national team. Sibanyoni has been a key part of the Tigers in their BAL seasons and holds the record for most rebounds in a BAL game. He is nicknamed "Nahi".

Made by Ball Blue Soldiers, commonly known as MBB or MBB Blue Soldiers, is a South African basketball team based in Johannesburg. The team plays in the Basketball National League (BNL), the highest level of basketball in the country, following their promotion in 2024.
