Mor Gregorios Joseph (born 10 November 1960) is a Syriac Orthodox archbishop, who is currently serving as the Malankara Metropolitan of the Syriac Orthodox Church in India. [1] [2] [3]
Following the death of Baselios Thomas I, he was unanimously elected as Catholicos of India, during the Regional Malankara Synod held on December 8, 2024. [4] He is set to be elevated on March 25, 2025 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Atchaneh, Lebanon in a service presided by Ignatius Aphrem II, where he will be given the name Baselios Joseph I. [5]
Mor Gregorios Joseph was born as the youngest of four children to Srambikkal Pallithitta Geevarghese and Saramma in Perumpilly, Mulanthuruthy. He is the grandchild of the cousin of Geevarghese Gregorios of Parumala. Joseph had his primary education at Perumpally Primary School and high school education from Mulanthuruthy High School.
At the age of 13 Joseph was ordained deacon by Geevarghese Mor Gregorios (Perumpally Thirumeni) at Mor Ignatius Dayro Manjinikkara on 25 March 1974. Joseph served as the secretary to Perumpally Thirumeni for many years. He did pre-degree and degree studies from Maharajas College, Ernakulam and joined Mor Julius Seminary, Perumpally, for his theological studies. Later on 25 March 1984, Joseph was ordained Kassiso at Marthoman Church, Mulanthuruthy, by Mor Baselios Paulose II, Catholicose. Joseph did his master's degree in philosophy from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and higher studies in theology from the US. While in the US, he served as the vicar of many churches. Joseph was ordained Ramban by Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas at Damascus on 15 January 1994. On 16 January 1994, Joseph Ramban was consecrated Metropolitan by Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Prince Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, at Damascus, for the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church Cochin Diocese in Malankara. Sunthroniso was held at Kyomtha Cathedral, Thiruvankulam on 23 January 1994 and assumed the office of the diocese. Joseph served as the president of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA) from 1996 till 2002.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) also known as the Indian Orthodox Church (IOC) or simply as the Malankara Church, is an autocephalous Oriental Orthodox church headquartered in Devalokam, near Kottayam, India. It serves India's Saint Thomas Christian population. According to tradition, these communities originated in the missions of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. It employs the Malankara Rite, an Indian form of the West Syriac liturgical rite.
Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas was the 122nd reigning Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and, as such, Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church. Also known by his traditional episcopal name, Severios, he was enthroned as patriarch on 14 September 1980 in St. George's Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus. He succeeded Ignatius Ya`qub III. As is traditional for the head of the church, Mor Severios adopted the name Ignatius.
The Malankara Metropolitan or the Metropolitan of Malabar is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of the Malankara Syrian Church. It evolved from the title of the sixteenth century East Syriac metropolitans of India who were also styled the Metropolitan of Malabar. Since the division among the Saint Thomas Christians following the Synod of Diamper, the title has been mostly employed in association with the West Syriac branch of the community, usually known as the Malankara Church, among whom the office of the Malankara Metropolitan became the continuation of the local dynastic Archdeaconate.
Gregorios of Parumala, also known as Parumala Thirumeni and Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, was a Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church. Parumala Thirumeni became the first person of Indian origin to be canonised as saint. In 1947, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church declared Mar Gregorios as a saint, making him the first saint from India canonized by that church. In November 1987, the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church(Syriac Orthodox Church) canonized him as a saint.

Mor Baselios Thomas I was a Syriac Orthodox prelate who served as the Catholicos of India (Maphrian) and head of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. Enthroned on 26 July 2002 by Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas in Damascus, Syria, he led the church through periods of ecclesiastical and social challenge until his death in 2024.

The position was renamed as Catholicos of India in 2002, in accordance with its actual jurisdiction.
Geevarghese Dionysius Vattasseril, also Dionysius VI, Dionysius Geevarghese II or, popularly, Vattasseril Thirumeni, was a bishop of the Malankara Church and 15th Malankara Metropolitan. In 2003, Dionysius was canonized as a saint by the Malankara Orthodox Church, and his feast day is celebrated on February 23 each year. He is known as 'The Great Luminary of Malankara Church', a title which the Church bestowed on him in recognition of his contribution to the Church.

St. George's Monastery is a Jacobite Syrian Christian Church situated at a hilltop near Puthencruz, Ernakulam District, Kerala. The monastery was established by Mor Yulius Elias Qoro. The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Seminary began functioning in this monastery and later moved to Udayagiri. The monastery is the final resting place of Catholicos Baselios Paulose II. In 2019, a retreat house named Khanema Hanna Home was consecrated by Ignatius Aphrem II Patriarch near to the Monastery.
Malankara Malpan Arch Corepiscopa Curien (Kurian) Kaniyamparambil was a priest in the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church and a scholar of the Syriac language, who translated the Bible from the Syriac Peshitta text to Malayalam. This is the official bible used by Syriac Orthodox Church in India.
