Sir Dr. Mor Athanasious Eliyas (born Eliyas on 11 February 1964) is a Syriac Orthodox bishop. As of 2012 [update] he was the Patriarchal vicar of Singapore, President of Antiochean Faith Movement in India and Vicar General of the St. Athanasius Cathedral at the Puthencuriz. [1] [2]
Athanasious Eliyas was born, in the Kozhiparambath family of Thuruthisserry in Angamali, to Ittoop and Eliyamma (Kooranthazhathu Parambil family, Peechanickad) on 13 April 1964. The family belonged to the Akaparambu Mor Sabor Afroth church in Angamali diocese.
He had his schooling at the Nedumbasserry Mar Athanasious School and college education at the Angamali DePaul College. [3] He pursued theological studies under Ramban Geevarghese Karimbil (Metropolitan Dionysius Geevarghese) at Dayro d’Ignatius, Manjanikkara. Dr. Athanasious is currently doing research in Trinity under renowned scholar and theologian Commander Prof. Dr. C A Ninan PhD, DSc, DLitt, DD. He is expected to submit the thesis and attend the defense soon.
On 22 July 1988 Dionysius Thomas ordained him as Deacon (Korooyo), and on 15 January 1995 he was ordained as priest (Kassisso). On 2 November 2002, Kassisso Eliyas was elevated to the order of Ramban (Dayroyo) by Catholicos Baselios Thomas I at the Mor Sabor Afroth church in Akaparambu. In November 2006 he was elected to the highest priestly order of the Metropolitan and the decision was later ratified by the Malankara Synod, Working Committee, Managing Committee, the Catholicos and the Patriarch. On Monday 1 January 2007, Catholicos Baselios Thomas I ordained Rabban Eliyas as Metropolitan Athanasious at the St. Athanasius Cathedral, Puthencuriz, in the presence of many religious and government dignitaries.
Athanasious was enthroned on 15 April 2007 at the Mor Sabor Mor Aphroth Church at Akaparambu. Baselios Thomas I was the chief celebrant and Metropolitans Gregorios Joseph and Chrysostmos Markose were the co-celebrants during the holy ceremony. Athanasious was appointed as the President of the Antiochean Movement in India and vicar-general of St. Athanasius Cathedral at Puthencuriz Patriarchal center. The Malankara Episcopal Synod held in May 2007 gave him the additional charge of the Malankara Clergy Association.
As a priest he had served the churches at Vadattupara St. George Church, Aymuri St. Thomas Church, Neduvathoor St. George Church, Peechanikad Mount Tabor Church, Angamali St. Mary's Cathedral, Ernakulam St. Peter's Church and Thuruthissery Simhsana Church. For a brief period he had also served as the secretary of Metropolitan Dionysius Thomas.
Athanasious was appointed as the President of the Antiochean Movement in India and vicar-general of St. Athanasius Cathedral at Puthencuriz Patriarchal center. The Malankara Episcopal Synod held in May 2007 gave him the additional charge of the Malankara Clergy Association. Athanasious also serves as the President of Malankara Evangelical Association, President of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association, Manager of Mar Athanasious Upper Primary School, Thuruthissery and Chairperson of Women Welfare Institute, under Antiochean Movement at Thuruthissery.

Malankara Metropolitan is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of the Malankara Syrian Church, previously by the Government of Travancore and Cochin in South India. This title was awarded by a proclamation from the King of Travancore and the King of Cochin. The Prime jurisdiction regarding the temporal, ecclesiastical and spiritual administration of the Malankara Church is vested in the Malankara Metropolitan. The Malankara Metropolitan is the legal custodian of the Kottayam Old Seminary, interest of Vattipanam and Other Common Community properties of Malankara Church.
Saint Geevarghese Mor Gregorios, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni, was a Metropolitan of the Malankara Church. Parumala Thirumeni became the first person of Indian origin to be canonised as saint. In 1947, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church declared Mar Gregorios as a saint, making him the first canonized Christian saint from India. In November 1987, the Syriac Orthodox Church canonized him as a saint.

He was enthroned on 26 July 2002 by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East in a ceremony held in Damascus, Syria.

The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church (JSCC), or the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in India also known as Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Jacobite Syrian Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church in India, is a catholicate based in Kerala, India, of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and part of the Oriental Orthodox Church. It recognizes the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East as supreme head of the church. It functions autonomously within the church, administered by the Metropolitan Trustee, under the authority of the Maphrian of India, Baselios Thomas I. Following schism with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, is currently the only church in Malankara that is directly under a Syriac Christian Antiochian hierarchy, claiming continuity to the 1665 schism. The church employs the West Syriac Rite Liturgy of Saint James.

Thrikkunathu Seminary is a historic seminary under the ownership of Malankara Orthodox Church in Aluva, Ernakulam.Owing to an ownership dispute between the factions,the Methran Kakshi and the Bava Kashi, the seminary was closed in December 1977. Akaparambu, or Akapparambu is a village in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India near the Cochin International Airport and south of the town of Angamaly. St. George's Monastery is a Jacobite Syrian Christian Church situated at a hilltop near Puthencruz, Ernakulam District, Kerala. The monastery was established by Mor Yulius Elias Qoro. The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Seminary began functioning in this monastery and later moved to Udayagiri. The monastery is the final resting place of Catholicos Baselios Paulose II. In 2019, a retreat house named Khanema Hanna Home was consecrated by Ignatius Aphrem II Patriarch near to the Monastery.
