Guiseley School is a Mixed Secondary School and Sixth Form located in Guiseley in the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. [1]

Contents

Guiseley School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the Sixth Form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs.

History

Early Years:

The schools history predates the 1960s as Guiseley Secondary Modern. This was located upon Oxford Road in the centre of Guiseley and is now site to Guiseley Primary School. [2] During the early 1960s a larger site was found and new buildings constructed for the secondary school. By 1963, the site had been completed and the new school was officially opened on 20 July 1963. The first cohort of students enrolled in September 1963.

1990s onwards:

In 1996, the school was awarded Technology College status. This ended in 2014.

In September 2011, Guiseley School became one of the first schools in the UK to completely ban skirts as part of their school uniform. [3] The school released a statement saying that they believed that short skirts were contributing to the sexualisation of children. [4] With a new uniform introduced in 2019, this ban has since been revoked. [5]

In January 2014, Guiseley became a Foundation School administered by Leeds City Council and the Aireborough Learning Partnership.

In March 2020, Department for Education statistics revealed that Guiseley School received the lowest amount of funding per pupil of all Leeds state secondary schools, with £4,673 per head, although this figure was still above the national average of £4,556 per pupil for all state schools in England. [6]

Redevelopment:

In January 2019, plans to replace most of the existing school buildings with a new development were approved. [7] The plans were expected to be completed in February 2021. [8] By June 2023, the majority of the old school grounds had been demolished and replaced with newer, more-up-to-date buildings and facilities. These include a new sports hall, auditorium and peripatetic music classrooms. [9]

Academic Performance

Awards:

In October 2009, the school was awarded the International School Award from the British Council for its outstanding development of international dimension. [10]

In July 2012, the school was awarded the Artsmark Gold Award from the Arts Council of England. [11] In November 2017, the school was awarded the Artsmark Award Platinum. It was one of only twelve schools across the UK to achieve this ranking. [12] The school achieved the Platinum Artsmark Award again in September 2022.

In March 2021, the school was awarded as a Shakespeare School Festival Gold School in recognition of it "developing and embedding personal and transferable skills through the arts and encouraging community engagement". [13]

In September 2023, the school was awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark from the Geographical Association. It was one of only twelve schools across the country to achieve the award. [14]
