Pudsey Grammar School is a secondary school with a sixth form in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, England. It serves over 1300 pupils from the town and surrounding area. The school has a large Sixth Form of over 260 students offering 20 A level courses and 6 Applied General courses. [2]

History

It was first established in 1905 under the name Pudsey and District Secondary School, meeting in Pudsey Town Hall until the school's first purpose-built building opened on Richardshaw Lane in 1911, with construction having started in mid-1909. The name changed to Pudsey Grammar School in 1944 and was known by this name until 1980 at which point the name changed to Pudsey Grangefield School. It was later given the status of a specialist college of Maths and Computing. In September 2021 the school changed its name back to Pudsey Grammar School. [3]

The school's logo is the coat of arms of Pudsey, bearing the slogan "Be Just and Fear Not". The logo is built into the face of the original Grammar School Building; this Grade II listed building at the front of the old site has been converted into flats, and the rest of the site was demolished to make an open recreational area for the new building.[ citation needed ]

The school has only had six Headteachers since 1911. [4] On 21 September 2009, the school was visited by the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott. [5] The school was also visited in 2010 by Labour leadership candidate and former Foreign Secretary David Miliband, [6] [ failed verification ] who described the new building as "a great monument to Labour government". [7]

Behaviour Hub

In April 2022 Pudsey Grammar School was named as part of the expansion of the Department for Education's national Behaviour Hubs programme as one of only 18 Lead Secondary schools nationally. [8] This is in recognition of the school's 'exemplary behaviour culture'. [9]

The Pudsey loop was a railway line in the former West Riding of Yorkshire, England, which served the town of Pudsey and later offered a second connection between Bramley in the east and Laisterdyke and Dudley Hill in the west, in addition to the existing line between Leeds and Bradford Exchange station.

Pudsey is a ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It contains 47 listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Of these, one is listed at Grade I, the highest of the three grades, two are at Grade II*, the middle grade, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. The parish contains the town of Pudsey, including the area of Swinnow, and the countryside to the southwest, including the village of Tyersal. It also contains the Fulneck Moravian Settlement, many of whose buildings are listed. Most of the other listed buildings are houses, cottages, and associated structures, farmhouses and farm buildings, a milestone, public houses, some of which have been converted for other uses, former schools, churches, a bank, and a war memorial.

The Golden Beam is a pub and Grade II listed building located in the Headingley area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was built in c. 1912 for the Church of Christ, Scientist, and was known as the Elinor Lupton Centre from 1986 to 2010 when it was a school arts centre. It was designed by Piet de Jong and William Peel Schofield from the architectural firm Schofield and Berry. Constructed in white Portland stone in a mixed style of Egyptian Revival and Art Deco, it was originally built as a Sunday school in c. 1912–1914, extended in the 1930s with a church building and then used by the Leeds Girls' High School as a theatre and music centre from 1986 until 2010. The structure has architectural significance in the locality due to its distinct style and use of materials; many original features and fittings survive, including the entrance foyer, two staircases and a glazed lantern in the auditorium roof.
