Gusau Airstrip or Gusau Airfield( IATA : QUS, ICAO : DNGU) is an airstrip serving Gusau, and it's nearby town, the capital city of the Zamfara State in Nigeria.

Gusau is also a major centre for commercial services in the state mostly farming, the Gusau people are most of the Hausa tribes, because of the availability of large arable land, its indigenes are mostly farmers,it is a New airport that was built by the former governor of zamfara state, Bello Matawalle, it has brought great development to zamfara state. It is the only functional airport in the state, which handles commercial and private flights to most cities in Nigeria. [4] [5]

Gusau airstrip construction The Gusau airport is a planned construction project for an international cargo airport at Gusau the capital town of Zamfara state, Nigeria. The project was expected to commence construction in August 2019 with the leadership of Gov. Bello Matawalle, meanwhile the project was delayed for about a year beyond the scheduled completion date, so, he stated that the operations will commence by the end of May 2021, he also confirmed that the airport project was to be executed under a USD1 billion, public private partnership (ppp) with afrexim bank. [4] [5]

Gusau Airstrip Runway

Gusau airfield has only one runway. The surface is actually unpaved, it is also coated with laterite, runway lighting is yet to be installed at the airport. Because of the lack of light, commercial activities only take place in the day. [5]

Abdu Gusau, Garkuwan Sokoto, MBE, OON (1918–1994), was a Nigerian civil engineer, and statesman who served as the Garkuwa of Sokoto until his death in 1994. He was the Chief estate engineer for Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1967 to 1972 where he was in charge of estates, which included buildings, the campus road network and the water supply. Gusau also served as a principal engineer with Taylor Woodrow of London where he worked on building London Heathrow's airport terminal.

The 2019 Zamfara State gubernatorial election occurred on 9 March 2019. APC's Mukhtar Shehu Idris polled 67.41% of the total popular votes, defeating PDP's Bello Matawalle who got 23.89% of the total votes and trailed behind by a margin of 345,089 votes, and several minor party candidates. APC swept the entire 14 LGAs of the state, winning in all. It was, however, Matawalle, who was later declared winner by the INEC and sworn in as governor after the verdict of the Supreme Court, which declared Idris' votes as 'wasted'.

The 2023 Zamfara State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Zamfara State, concurrent with elections to the Zamfara State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Bello Matawalle has been renominated by his party and was defeated by Dauda Lawal of PDP on 18th of March 2023.
