HMS Hardy was a Albacore-class gunboat of the Royal Navy, notable for her action during the British involvement in the Taiping Rebellion.

Design

The Albacore-class was almost identical to the preceding Dapper class. [5] Hardy measured 106 feet (32 m) in length at the gundeck and 93 feet 2+12 inches (28.410 m) at the keel. They were 22 feet (6.7 m) in beam, 8 feet (2.4 m) deep in the hold and had a draught of 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m). Their displacement was 284 tons and they measured 2326894 tons Builder's Old Measurement. The Albacore-class carried a crew of 36-40 men. [4]

She had a two-cylinder horizontal single-expansion direct-acting steam engine, built by Maudslay, Sons and Field, with three boilers, providing 60 nominal horsepower through a single screw, sufficient for 7.5 knots (13.9 km/h; 8.6 mph). [1] [4]

She was armed with one 68-pounder (95 cwt) muzzle-loading smoothbore gun, one 32-pounder muzzle-loading smoothbore gun and two 24-pounder howitzers. [4]

Service

Hardy was commissioned under Lieut. William Leyland Wilson on 7 March 1856, though Wilson died three months later. Thus in July she was paid off at Portsmouth and joined the Steam Reserve. [3]

On 20 September 1859, she was put under the command of Lieut. Archibald George Bogle and began serving in the East Indies and China. [3] Under Bogle's command, Hardy saw action during the British involvement in the Taiping Rebellion. By November, Hardy was stationed in Imperialist-controlled Ningbo, and was present when Taiping forces attacked Ningbo. Arthur Moule, an English missionary, claimed he saw Hardy brandishing her "72-pounder pivot gun" (though the main gun of her class was recorded to be a 68-pounder [4] ) in an attempt to halt the Taiping advance but ultimately did not fire. [6] She eventually took part in the recapturing of Ningbo on 10 May 1862, capturing a Chinese flag thought to have belonged to Taiping general Chen Yucheng. The flag is now held at the National Maritime Museum. [7]

On 31 July 1862, Hardy and Confucius assisted the French-led Ever-Triumphant Army in the capture of Yuyao. [8] The ships were also present during the Battle of Cixi on 20 September. [9] Frederick Townsend Ward, commander of the Ever Victorious Army, was fatally wounded by a shot in the early morning of 21 September. [10] He was removed to Hardy, where a surgeon from Encounter operated on Ward and extracted the ball, though Ward ultimately died on 22 September after he had been further removed to Ningbo. [11]

On 2 February 1863, command was transferred to Lieut. Henry John Fletcher Campbell. On 14 April 1864, command was once again transferred to Lieut. George Morice. She was paid off on 31 March 1867 and sold at Hong Kong on 9 February 1869. [3]

HMS <i>Enterprise</i> (1864) Armoured sloop from UK

The seventh HMS Enterprise of the Royal Navy was an armoured sloop launched in 1864 at Deptford Dockyard. Originally laid down as a wooden screw sloop of the Camelion class, she was redesigned by Edward Reed and completed as a central battery ironclad. The ship spent the bulk of her career assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet before returning to England in 1871 where she was paid off. Enterprise was sold for scrap in 1885.

HMS Resistance was the second of two Defence-class ironclads built for the Royal Navy in the 1860s. She was the first capital ship in the Royal Navy to be fitted with a ram and was given the nickname of Old Rammo. Resistance was initially assigned to the Channel Fleet upon commissioning, but was transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1864, the first ironclad to be assigned to that fleet. She was rearmed in 1867 and became a guardship when recommissioned in 1869. The ship was reassigned to the Channel Fleet in 1873 before reverting to her former duties in 1877. Resistance was decommissioned in 1880 and was used for gunnery and torpedo trials beginning in 1885. The ship was sold for scrap in 1898 and foundered in 1899 en route to the breaker's yard. She was salvaged and later scrapped.

HMS <i>Royal Sovereign</i> (1857) Ship of the line of the Royal Navy

HMS Royal Sovereign was originally laid down as a 121-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She would have mounted sixteen 8 in (200 mm) cannon, 114 32-pounder (15 kg) guns, and a 68-pounder (31 kg) pivot gun. With the rise of steam and screw propulsion, she was ordered to be converted on the stocks to a 131-gun screw ship, with conversion beginning on 25 January 1855. She was finally launched directly into the ordinary on 25 April 1857. She measured 3765 tons burthen, with a gundeck of 240 feet 6 inches (73.30 m) and breadth of 62 feet (19 m), and a crew of 1,100, with engines of 780 nhp.

<i>Camelion</i>-class sloop

The Camelion class was a class of screw-driven sloops of wood construction, designed by Isaac Watts and operated by the Royal Navy. Eight ships of the class were built from 1858 to 1866 with another eight cancelled. They were initially rated as second-class sloops, but were later reclassified as corvettes.

The entire class were never satisfactory as gunvessels, partly due to their excessive draught, and Eclipse was broken up at Sheerness in 1867, only seven years after her launch.

HMS <i>Conway</i> (1832) Conway-class sixth rate of the Royal Navy

HMS Conway was a Conway-class sixth rate of the Royal Navy, built by Chatham Dockyard and launched on 2 February 1832. She was lent to the Mercantile Marine Association of Liverpool in February 1859 to act as a training ship for boys, and gave her name to HMS Conway, ultimately a series of three ships and then from 1964-74 a shore-based school. When Winchester took her place as the training ship in 1861, the two ships swapped names. Under her new name of Winchester she became the Aberdeen Royal Naval Reserve ship on 28 August 1861.

<i>Hydra</i>-class sloop

The Hydra class were a class of three paddlewheel steam sloops of the British Royal Navy. They saw active service variously in the Baltic during the Crimean War, against Ottoman forces in Syria and against slavers in West Africa. Latterly, Hydra and Hecate were used for surveys in the Mediterranean, the Pacific, Australia and the Atlantic, and thus their names were re-used for the Hecla-class survey vessels in the late 20th century. Two of the classes were broken up after more than twenty-five years of service, and Hecla was sold for commercial use in 1863.

SMS Niobe was a Diamond-class 28-gun sixth-rate sailing frigate built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s. She was never commissioned into the Royal Navy, which was converting to steam power, and was sold to Prussia in 1862. She was named after Niobe, a figure from Greek mythology. She served with the Prussian Navy, the North German Federal Navy and the Imperial German Navy as a training ship until stricken and hulked in 1890. Niobe was eventually broken up in 1919.

The Banterer-class gunboat was a class of eleven gunboats mounting two 6-inch and two 4-inch guns, built for the Royal Navy between 1880 and 1892.

<i>Albacore</i>-class gunboat (1855) British Royal Navy gunboat class

The Albacore-class gunboat, also known as "Crimean gunboat", was a class of 98 gunboats built for the Royal Navy in 1855 and 1856 for use in the 1853-1856 Crimean War. The design of the class, by W. H. Walker, was approved on 18 April 1855. The first vessels were ordered the same day, and 48 were on order by July; a second batch, which included Surly, were ordered in early October.

<i>Cormorant</i>-class gunvessel

The Cormorant-class gunvessels were a class of 4-gun first-class gunvessels built for the Royal Navy in the 1860s. They were somewhat unsuccessful; intended for shore bombardment in shallow water, they exceeded their design draft by 50%. Seven of the 13 ships ordered were suspended, with 3 finished or converted as survey ships and the other 4 cancelled. Racehorse was wrecked after only 4 years, and those ships that were completed as planned had short operational lives, in some cases less than 10 years. The survey vessels lasted longest, with the last ship of the class, Sylvia, being broken up in 1890.

HMS <i>Surly</i> (1856) British Royal Navy mortar vessel

HMS Surly was an Albacore-class gunboat built for the Royal Navy. She was constructed in Newcastle by T & W Smith as part of the second batch, ordered in early October 1855, and was launched on 18 March 1856. After commissioning she served in the Steam Reserve and Coastguard Reserve. She was sold out of service in 1869.

HMS Ringdove was a Vigilant-class gunvessel of the Royal Navy. She was launched by J. Samuel White, Cowes in 1856 and broken up in Cowes in 1866.

HMS Kestrel was a Clown-class gunboat of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1856, serving in China and Japan in the 1850s and 1860s. She saw action during the Second Opium War and the Taiping Rebellion.

HMS Rhadamanthus was one of the initial steam powered vessels built for the Royal Navy. On 10 January 1831 the First Sea Lord gave orders that four paddle vessels be built to competitive designs. The vessels were to be powered by Maudslay, Son & Field steam engines, carry a schooner rig and mount one or two 10-inch shell guns. Initially classed simply as a steam vessel (SV), she was re-classed as a second-class steam sloop in 1846. Designed by Thomas Roberts, the Master Shipwright of Plymouth. She was launched and completed in 1832, She was converted into a transport in 1841 then in 1851 she was a troopship and by the 1860s she was a transport again. Her breaking was completed in February 1864.
