HNLMS Van Meerlant (ML 36) was a minelayer of the Royal Netherlands Navy built in the Gusto shipyard at Schiedam as part of the Douwe Aukes class.

Service

On the general mobilisation of the Dutch military on 28 August 1939, Van Meerlant was deployed to lay minefields, including ones at IJmuiden and the Hook of Holland. [1] She sailed for the United Kingdom from Vlissingen alongside the gunboat Flores , arriving on 18 May 1940. [1] She was first stationed at Falmouth, alongside her sister ship Douwe Aukes and the Dutch ship Medusa. [2] Later that year Van Meerlant was posted to Chatham and assigned to the Thames Local Defence Flotilla, responsible for maintaining the boom defences in the Thames Estuary. [1] [3] On 14 March she was transferred to the Royal Navy, retaining her name as HMS Van Meerlant. [1] She was sunk on 4 June 1941 by a mine, with 42 hands killed. [1] [4]

<i>Douwe Aukes</i>-class minelayer

The Douwe Aukes class were two minelayers of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The two ships were built at the Gusto shipyard in Schiedam. Construction began in 1919 and was completed in 1922. Built to serve in the Dutch territorial waters, both ships were still in service during the Second World War and they both escaped to the United Kingdom, HNLMS Douwe Aukes on 14 May and HNLMS Van Meerlant on 18 May 1940. Both vessels were transferred to the British Royal Navy. Van Meerlant was sunk by a mine in 1942 while in British service. Douwe Aukes was returned to the Royal Netherlands Navy following the war and was used as a depot ship until sold for scrap in 1962.

M-class minesweeper (Netherlands)

The M class were the first minesweepers of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The need for minesweepers for the Dutch marine came during the First World War when sea mines were laid in great numbers.

HNLMS Douwe Aukes was a minelayer of the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was built in the Gusto shipyard at Schiedam as the lead ship of the Douwe Aukes class, and one of her early commanders was Eugène Lacomblé.

HNLMS <i>Van Kinsbergen</i> (1939) Sloop of the Royal Netherlands Navy

HNLMS Van Kinsbergen was a unique sloop of the Royal Netherlands Navy build by Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij. She served in the Dutch West Indies in 1940. Later, she served as escort vessel and survived World War II. She was decommissioned on 29 May 1959 and was sold for scrap on 19 May 1974.

The O 9-class submarine consisted of three submarines, built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Used for patrols in the Dutch home waters. The class comprised O 9, O 10, and O 11. Its diving depth was 60 metres (200 ft).

K-class torpedo boat Ship class

The K-class torpedo boats were a class of three small warships that served in the Dutch Koninklijke Marine. The K stands for 'Klein', as these ships were ordered next to the larger G 1-class torpedo boat, where the G stands for 'Groot'. The 48-ton ships were ordered in 1904 and commissioned the next year. Christiaan Cornelis saw limited action at the start of World War II during the Battle of the Netherlands in 1940.

HNLMS <i>Bruinvis</i> (1992) Submarine

HNLMS Bruinvis (S810) is a Walrus-class submarine of the Royal Netherlands Navy. She entered service in 1994 as the fourth and final submarine of the Walrus class, after HNLMS Walrus, Zeeleeuw and Dolfijn. Bruinvis has been deployed both for naval exercises and in combat operations around the world. As of December 2015 the submarine was in active service.

Z-class torpedo boat Ship class

The Z-class torpedo boats were a class of twelve warships that served in the Dutch Koninklijke Marine, German Kaiserliche Marine, Polish Marynarka Wojenna and British Royal Navy. The Royal Netherlands Navy ordered eight Z-class torpedo boats before the outbreak of World War I, four were to be built by the German shipbuilder AG Vulcan Stettin, to be named Z 1 to Z 4, while four others were to be built in the Netherlands; Z 5 to Z 8. After the outbreak of World War I the four ships under construction in Germany where requisitioned for service in the German navy, resulting in the Dutch Navy to order another four ships to be built in the Netherlands. The ships saw action during both World War I and World War II. One of the German ships was lost in World War I, while one Polish and one Dutch ship sank during World War II. Another Polish torpedo boat sank in peacetime due to a boiler explosion.

The Breezand-class tugboats are used by the Royal Netherlands Navy, primarily to dock their smaller ships at the Nieuwe Haven Naval Base. In winter they are also used as icebreaker.

<i>Balder</i>-class patrol vessel

The Balder-class patrol vessels were a class of five patrol vessels built for the Royal Netherlands Navy in the 1950s at the Rijkswerf in Willemsoord, Den Helder. They were paid for by the United States under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP). The ships were used to patrol the Dutch coast and waterways.

HNLMS <i>Urania</i> (1928) Training ship

HNLMS Urania was a naval training ship of the Dutch Navy and was used to train future Adelborsten from the Royal Naval College (KIM).

The Schelde-class tugboats are used by the Royal Netherlands Navy, primarily to move around large fenders and small sloops at the Nieuwe Haven Naval Base.

HNLMS Hoofdinspecteur Zeeman was a steamship of the Dienst der Bebakening en kustverlichting. She was built in the Netherlands and served as beacon ship in the Dutch East Indies. In 1939 the ship was militarized and taken into service of the Royal Netherlands Navy as buoy tender.
