Haematomma fluorescens is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) and crustose lichen in the family Haematommataceae. Found in the neotropics, it was formally described as a new species in 1995 by lichenologists Klaus Kalb and Bettina Staiger. The type specimen was collected in the cordillera of Piribebuy in Paraguay; here it was found growing on the bark of Cinchona . The specific epithet refers to the fluorescence observed when the lichen is shone with a UV light; this is caused by the secondary compound known as lichexanthone. This compound readily distinguishes it from other members of Haematomma . [1] The lichen also contains russulone. [2] The variety Haematomma fluorescens var. longisporum, found in Costa Rica, was proposed in 2006. It differs from the nominal variety in having long ascospores that are 18–20 times as long as broad (measuring 75–120 by 4–6  μm) and in the number of septa (13–27). [3] Haematomma fluorescens has been reported to occur in Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Venezuela. [1]

Eugeniella is a genus of mostly leaf-dwelling (foliicolous) lichens in the family Pilocarpaceae. It contains 13 species. The genus was circumscribed in 2008 by lichenologists Robert Lücking, Emmanuël Sérusiaux, and Klaus Kalb, with Eugeniella psychotriae assigned as the type species. This lichen was originally called Patellaria psychotriae by Johannes Müller Argoviensis in 1881. The seven species that were initially included in the genus had previously been placed in the genera Bacidia and Byssoloma. Several newly identified species from Australasia and Central and South America were later added. Most of the species grow on leaves, although four of the Australasian species grow on bark.

Klaus Kalb is a German lichenologist and an authority on tropical lichens.

<i>Vainionora americana</i> Species of lichen

Vainionora americana is a species of crustose lichen in the family Lecanoraceae that is found in the United States. It was described as a species new to science in 2004 by lichenologists Klaus Kalb, Tor Tønsberg, and John Alan Elix. The type was collected by Tønsberg from the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where it was found growing on the bark of a maple tree. It was later recorded in Alabama.

Xanthoparmelia klauskalbii is a species of foliose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. Found in Australia, it was described as a new species in 2007 by John Alan Elix. It grows on weathered volcanic rocks. The specific epithet honours German lichenologist Klaus Kalb.

Leptogium kalbii is a species of lichen in the family Collemataceae. It is found in Brazil, both in São Paulo State and in some Islands of Brazil.

Tapellaria isidiata is a species of corticolous lichen in the family Lecanoraceae. Found in Cameroon, it was described as a new species in 2021 by lichenologists Klaus Kalb and André Aptroot. The type was collected from Campo, where it was found growing on tree bark on a beach. The lichen has a glossy, mineral-grey thallus with whitish patches, and is bordered by a black hypothallus measuring 0.2–0.6 mm wide. The specific epithet isidiata refers to the presence of isidia, a characteristic of this species: it is the first in genus Tapellaria to have vegetative propagules. The lichen is unreactive to standard chemical spot tests.

Wirthiotrema is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Graphidaceae. The genus was circumscribed in 2010 by Eimy Rivas Plata, Klaus Kalb, Andreas Frisch, and H. Thorsten Lumbsch, with Wirthiotrema glaucopallens assigned as the type species. Wirthiotrema contains species that were formerly considered part of the Thelotrema glaucopallens species group. The genus name honours lichenologist Volkmar Wirth, "for his numerous outstanding contributions to lichenology".

Lecanora lichexanthona is a species of crustose and saxicolous (rock-dwelling) lichen in the family Lecanoraceae. Found in Brazil, it was formally described as a new species in 2000 by lichenologist Roland Guderley. The type specimen was collected by Klaus Kalb in a closed cerradão between Rio Verde de Mato Grosso and Coxim where it was found growing on siliceous rock. The specific epithet lichexanthona refers to the presence of the chemical lichexanthone as a major secondary in the lichen. Other compounds in the lichen are atranorin, hybocarpone, constipatic acid, and norlichexanthone. Lecanora lichexanthona is only known to occur in cerradão formations in central Brazil, at altitudes between 500 and 850 m.

Haematomma nicoyense is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichen in the family Haematommataceae. Found in Costa Rica, it was formally described as a new species in 2006 by Matthew Nelsen, Robert Lücking, and José Luis Chaves. The type specimen was collected from the Monte Alto Forest Reserve in the Nicoya Peninsula at an elevation between 750 and 900 m. Here, in lowland to lower montane moist forests, the species was found growing on the lower trunks of exposed trees and on fence posts. The specific epithet refers to the type locality.

Haematomma staigeriae is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichen in the family Haematommataceae. Found in Costa Rica, it was formally described as a new species in 2006 by Matthew Nelsen, Robert Lücking, and Loengrin Umaña. The type specimen was collected by the second author from the Talamanca Ridge in the Pacific La Amistad Conservation Area (Puntarenas) at an elevation between 1,600 and 1,800 m. Here, in a montane rainforest area with secondary vegetation dominated by Cecropia, the species was found growing on the lower trunks of trees. It is only known from the type locality. The specific epithet honours German lichenologist Bettina Staiger "for her contribution to the taxonomy and understanding of this genus".

Henricus (Harrie) Johannes Maria Sipman is a Dutch lichenologist. He specialises in tropical and subtropical lichens, and has authored or co-authored more than 250 scientific publications. He was the curator of the lichen herbarium at the Berlin Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum from 1983 until his retirement in 2010.
