Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Anglo-Boer war. British businessmen Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes in Kimberley,and Rhodes established the De Beers diamond company in the early days of the mining town.

Frances Goitsemang Baard was a South African trade unionist,organiser for the African National Congress Women's League and a Patron of the United Democratic Front,who was commemorated in the renaming of the Diamantveld District Municipality (Kimberley) as the Frances Baard District Municipality. Schoeman Street in Pretoria was also renamed in her honour.
Elizabeth Dipuo Peters was the Minister of Transport of the Republic of South Africa from 10 July 2013 until 30 March 2017,in the Zuma administration,and former Minister of Energy from 2009 to 2013 having served as successor to Manne Dipico as the second Premier of the Northern Cape Province,22 April 2004 to 10 May 2009. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),she serves on the Women's League National Executive Committee. Dipuo Peters resigned as a member of parliament for the African National Congress in April 2017.
Grizelda Boniwe Cjiekella was MEC for Education in the Northern Cape Province,South Africa,and served as Acting Premier of the province from 20 February 2012 until 2 April 2013.
Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas is the current Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces in the Republic of South Africa,after having taken office on 23 May 2019. From 2013 to 2019,she served as the 4th Premier of the Northern Cape Province. She was elected and inaugurated as the successor to Hazel Jenkins. Lucas briefly served as acting premier and before her appointment,as the MEC for Environmental Affairs in the Northern Cape Provincial Government.
The Sol Plaatje University,which had provisionally been referred to as the University of the Northern Cape,opened in Kimberley,South Africa,in 2014,accommodating a modest initial intake of 135 students. The student complement is expected to increase gradually towards a target of 7 500 students by 2024. Launched in a ceremony in Kimberley on 19 September 2013,it had been formally established as a public university in terms of Section 20 of the Higher Education Act of 1997,by way of Government Notice 630,dated 22 August 2013. Minister of Higher Education and Training,Blade Nzimande,observed at the launch that this “is the first new university to be launched since 1994 and as such is a powerful symbol of the country’s democracy,inclusiveness,and growth. It represents a new order of African intellect,with a firm focus on innovation and excellence." Previously announcing the name for the university,on 25 July 2013,President Jacob Zuma mentioned the development of academic niche areas that did not exist elsewhere,or were under-represented,in South Africa. "Given the rich heritage of Kimberley and the Northern Cape in general," Zuma said,"it is envisaged that Sol Plaatje will specialise in heritage studies,including interconnected academic fields such as museum management,archaeology,indigenous languages,and restoration architecture." Prof Andrew Crouch took over the helm on 1 April 2020 after the term of founding Vice-Chancellor,Prof Yunus Ballim came to a close.
Abraham Vosloo is a South African educator and politician from the Northern Cape serving as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance,Economic Development and Tourism since June 2020. He has been a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. He was the MEC for Roads and Public Works from May 2019 until June 2020. Vosloo was previously the Executive Mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Bentley Gavin Vass is a South African politician who has been the Northern Cape MEC for Co-operative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs since February 2018. He was sworn in as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in October 2017. Vass is a member of the African National Congress and the party's deputy provincial chairperson.
Martha Bartlett is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she has been serving as a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces since June 2020. From May 2014 to June 2020,Bartlett was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and a Member of the Executive Council in the provincial government.
McCollen Ntsikelelo Jack,known as Mac Jack,was a South African educator and politician. A member of the African National Congress,Jack was appointed to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in June 2013. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport,Safety and Liaison from June 2013 until May 2014,when he was appointed the MEC for Health. Following a cabinet reshuffle in March 2016,he was appointed the MEC for Finance,Economic Development and Tourism. Jack held the position until his appointment as MEC for Education in May 2019,despite him briefly being demoted from the Executive Council in May 2017.
Solomon Patrick Mabilo is a South African politician from the Northern Cape who served as the Executive Mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality from 2018 to 2021. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),he served as a Member of the National Assembly from 2014 to 2017. He was a Member of Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014 and again in 2018. Within the Northern Cape provincial government,he served as the MEC for Transport,Safety and Liaison from 2009 to 2013,and was the MEC for Environment and Nature Conservation between 2013 and 2014.
Alvin Botes is a South African African National Congress (ANC) politician from the Northern Cape who has been serving as the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since May 2019. He became a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in February 2018. He was the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development from 2009 to 2013 and the MEC for Co-operative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from 2013 to 2018. Botes served as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2018.
Mxolisa Simon Sokatsha was a South African accountant,educator and politician. A member of the African National Congress,he was a Member of the Executive Council in the Northern Cape from 2009 to 2019 and a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2003 to 2019. In 2019 he was elected to the South African National Assembly.
Cukelwa Magdeline Chotelo,known as Tiny Chotelo,is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2009. In 2013 she was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development. She was appointed MEC for Nature Conservation and Environmental Affairs in 2014. Chotelo was demoted from the Executive Council in 2018 and left the legislature in 2019.
Lebogang James Motlhaping is a South African politician from the Northern Cape. He was the Member of the Executive Council for Transport,Safety and Liaison from 2018 to 2019,the MEC for Health from 2016 to 2018,and the MEC for Sports,Arts and Culture from 2014 to 2016. He was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. Motlhaping is a member of the African National Congress.
Fawzia Rhoda is a South African politician serving as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. Rhoda is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba is a South African politician. She is the current chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education in the National Assembly of South Africa and a Member of Parliament representing the African National Congress. Prior to serving in parliament,she was a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Northern Cape provincial government.
Alexandra Jennifer Beukes is a South African politician who has been a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly since 12 June 2019. Prior to serving in the National Assembly,she was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and the mayor of the Khâi-Ma Local Municipality. Beukes is a member of the African National Congress.
