Heart Plymouth (formerly Plymouth Sound) was an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Plymouth in Devon, England.
The heritage name Plymouth Sound was a pun on the popular meaning of sound (in the audio sense) and the bay of Plymouth Sound between Penlee Point and Wembury Point in Devon.
In November 2005 it was announced that GCap's local radio stations in the South West, including Plymouth Sound, were to be sold as they were outside of the company's primary target area. [1] Four months later GCap decided that the sale would not go ahead, essentially because the offers made fell short of their expectations. [2]
In September 2008, it was announced that Plymouth Sound would be rebranded Heart FM as part of a national rebranding exercise by owners Global Radio, which saw twenty-nine stations renamed as Heart. Plymouth Sound was rebranded as Heart Plymouth on Monday 23 March 2009. By this time, most of the station's programming was produced in London, with local programming broadcast at breakfast every day and at drivetime each weekday.
On 21 June 2010, Global Radio announced plans to close Heart Plymouth and merge the station with Heart Exeter and Heart Torbay, Heart North Devon and Heart South Devon as part of plans to reduce the Heart network of stations from 33 to 16. [3] The new station, Heart Devon , began broadcasting from Exeter on 27 August 2010. [4]
The Christian media group and radio station Cross Rhythms grew out of a half-hour Christian music show on Plymouth Sound FM, which aired on Sunday evenings between 1983 and 1996. Initially called The Solid Rock of Jesus Christ, the show was renamed the Cross Rhythms Experience in 1992, and became a syndicated show in 1993. It was hosted by Chris Cole, the founder of Cross Rhythms.
Heart Somerset was an Independent Local Radio station serving Somerset, England. Originally owned by Orchard Media Ltd, the company was purchased by GWR Group in 1999, and subsequently became owned by GCap Media in 2005. Somerset's Orchard FM broadcast from studios at Haygrove House at Shoreditch near Taunton Racecourse, Taunton, adjacent to the M5.

Heart South Devon was an Independent Local Radio station serving the South Hams area of Devon, England. The station began broadcasting on 1 December 1999 and until its closure, was run as a joint venture between UKRD Group and Global Radio from studios at South Hams Business Park at Churchstow, Kingsbridge.
Heart Wiltshire was a local radio station owned and operated by Global Radio as part of the Heart network. It broadcast to north and west Wiltshire. The station was rebranded to Heart in March 2009 in line with Global Radio's rebranding of most of the One Network, to which the station was part of. Its local competitors were Sam FM, BBC Wiltshire and community radio station, Swindon 105.5.
Gold is a network of oldies radio stations in the United Kingdom, which was formed by the merger of the Capital Gold network and the Classic Gold network in August 2007. The station relaunched in March 2014 as a partly-automated service, broadcasting in fewer areas, after many of Gold's local AM/DAB frequencies were transferred to Smooth Radio. GCap Media was a British commercial radio company formed from the merger of the Capital Radio Group and GWR Group. The merger was completed in May 2005. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. On 31 March 2008 the company agreed a takeover by Global Radio for £375 million. This was completed on 6 June 2008, and the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Global Radio.

The Hit Music Network was a collection of five Independent Local Radio stations operating in the United Kingdom and owned by Global Radio. Created on 25 June 2008, the stations were formerly owned by GCap Media prior to its takeover by Global and, with the exception of 95.8 Capital FM, were all part of The One Network. Initially the network included Trent FM, Ram FM, Leicester Sound, Mercia FM, and Beacon FM Wolverhampton until the latter two we removed as they were part of the disposal by Global Radio after the GCap Media purchase and purchased by Orion Media. Mercury FM Crawley, Ten 17 in Harlow and Hertfordshire's Mercury 96.6 joined the Hit Music Network at that point, until 26 July 2010. Red Dragon FM in South Wales, whilst part of the Hit Music Network, remained local 24 hours a day taking none of the network programmes.
