Hell Can Wait is the first official EP released by American rapper Vince Staples. It marks his first commercial project, released under Def Jam Recordings. [1] [2]
On August 11, 2014, Staples took to Twitter to announce a new track, "Blue Suede." On August 15, 2014, he released a music video for the song. [3] On September 2, 2014, Staples announced the initial release date for the EP as September 23, although, it was later delayed due to sample clearance issues. On September 9, 2014, Staples released the second single from Hell Can Wait, titled "Hands Up". On September 25, the new, and final release date was revealed to be October 7, 2014. On October 1, Staples posted the official track listing. [4]

Hell Can Wait received critical acclaim from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 80, based on eight reviews. [5] Jay Balfour of HipHopDX wrote "At 24 minutes, there's a satisfaction in the shortness of Hell Can Wait, partly because it's so well contained, and partly because it hints at what's next. These songs are worth the attention he's drawing, how he'll sustain it for a full album is worth taking seriously." [8] Craig Jenkins of Pitchfork also wrote favorably of the EP, writing "his production values have finally caught up enough to push him past the scrappy sidekick division into the big leagues." [10] Emmanuel C. M. of XXL wrote, "The growth is unmistakable, with each song and new project, fans see his raw talent getting more finely tuned and concentrated." [12] In a positive review, David Jeffries of AllMusic wrote that although the project is too short for the "full artistic picture", there is no filler and went on to praise "Blue Suede" as the highlight of the EP. Ernest Dion Wilson, known professionally as No I.D., is an American record producer, DJ and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. He is known for his early work with Chicago-based rapper Common, as well as his career mentorship of rappers Kanye West, J. Cole and Logic. Wilson first gained success for his role as an in-house producer for Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Recordings—leading to largely uncredited work on Dupri's productions "My Boo" by Usher, "Outta My System" and "Let Me Hold You" by Bow Wow—before reaching commercial success with his solo productions. He worked with Jay-Z to produce his singles "Run This Town" and "Holy Grail," West to produce "Heartless," and Drake to produce "Find Your Love" and "Nonstop"; each have peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Vincent Jamal Staples is an American rapper, songwriter and actor. Based in Long Beach, California, he first became known for his appearances on projects by Odd Future members—Earl, Journey to the 5th Echelon (2010), and Doris (2013). He signed with Talib Kweli's Blacksmith Records prior to releasing his collaborative mixtape with Mac Miller, Stolen Youth (2013). The following year, he signed with No I.D.'s ARTium Recordings, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings to release his debut extended play, Hell Can Wait (2014)—which marked his first entry on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim.
Doris is the debut studio album by American rapper Earl Sweatshirt. It was released on August 20, 2013, through Odd Future Records and Tan Cressida Records, and distributed by Columbia Records. Doris follows his first mixtape, Earl, which was released in 2010 when he was sixteen. Nobody's Smiling is the tenth studio album by American hip hop recording artist Common. It was released on July 22, 2014, by Def Jam Recordings and No I.D.'s label ARTium Records. Following the release of his 2011's album The Dreamer/The Believer, Common took a hiatus from musical endeavors. In 2013, he returned to the studio and began working his tenth album and later revealed that the production, much like his previous effort, would be handled entirely by his longtime collaborator and record producer No I.D. In 2014, Common signed a recording contract with No I.D.'s ARTium Records, through Def Jam Recordings, for the distribution of the album.

It marks his first release on Def Jam since FM! (2018), and is also his final release with the label. Production was primarily handled by longtime collaborators Michael Uzowuru and LeKen Taylor, alongside Cardo, Jay Versace, and Saint Mino, among others. It marks his first album to not feature any guest vocalists, although Kilo Kish, Santigold, Baby Rose and Maddy Davis provide additional contributions.
