Hertford County Hospital is situated in the town of Hertford, county town of Hertfordshire, England. It is managed by the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
The origins of the hospital lie in the General Dispensary which was established in one room of Hertford Castle 'for the relief of the sick poor by affording them gratuitous advice and medicine' with permission from the Marquess of Salisbury, Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, in 1822. [1] [2] The foundation stone of a new purpose-built hospital was laid by the John Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln on 17 July 1832 and the General Infirmary, as it became known, opened to in-patients on 3 July 1833. [1] Beer was brewed and served at the hospital until 1834. [1] In the late 19th century the hospital was supported by funds from local people including Earl Cowper. [3] The facility became Hertford County Hospital in 1908 and, following a substantial reconstruction of the building that took place in 1916, it joined the National Health Service in 1948. [1]
A further re-development of the site, which cost of £8.5 million, took place in 2003; [4] the scheme, which involved the construction of new facilities and the release of the older buildings for residential use, [5] was completed in November 2004. [6]

Fulbourn Hospital is a mental health facility located between the Cambridgeshire village of Fulbourn and the Cambridge city boundary at Cherry Hinton, about 5 miles (8 km) south-east of the city centre. It is managed by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. The Ida Darwin Hospital site is situated behind Fulbourn Hospital. It is run and managed by the same trust, with both hospitals sharing the same facilities and staff pool.
Hertford Castle was built in Norman times by the River Lea in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, England. Most of the internal buildings of the castle have been demolished. The main surviving section is the Tudor gatehouse, which is a Grade I listed building. Parts of the bailey walls on the east side of the castle also still stand, and are a Grade II* listed building.

Hertingfordbury is a small village in Hertfordshire, England, close to the county town of Hertford. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Hertingfordbury is also the name of a neighbouring civil parish, which does not contain the village. Hertingfordbury Village is located within the Castle ward of local government Hertford Town Council. The population of the civil parish as of the 2021 census was 689.
