"Hiding with Boys" is a song by English rock band Creeper. Written by the band (Will Gould, Ian Miles, Hannah Greenwood, Sean Scott, Dan Bratton and Oliver Burdett) with producer Neil Kennedy, it was featured on the band's 2017 debut studio album Eternity, in Your Arms . The track was released as the second single and music video from the album on 12 December 2016.

Composition and lyrics

"Hiding with Boys" was described by Creeper's record label Roadrunner Records in a press release as a song which captures the band's "unique cocktail of rollicking punk rock and dark gothic romanticism" and "marries [the band's frontman] Will Gould's impassioned croon with sweet harmonies from keyboardist Hannah Greenwood". [1] Speaking at the time of the song's release, Gould proposed that "It's a bridge of sorts from the band we were on the EPs to the band that we are now, and creating it helped us to find a way to bring our incredibly varied influences together". [2] The vocalist described it as "a song of unrequited love told from the perspective of a 'tragic monster'" and described it as "a lyrical sequel of sorts" to The Stranger single "Black Mass". [2] It was the first song to be written by the band for inclusion on Eternity, in Your Arms . [1] [2]

Reviewing the track for DIY magazine, Tom Connick described "Hiding with Boys" as a "foot-to-the-floor summer anthem", claiming that it shows the band's "punk-rock, Warped Tour influences" through "double-time drumming and searing three chord runs". [3] Ticketmaster's Ben Tipple called it a "morose melody driven track", [4] while Kerrang! Radio presented it as "a towering rock anthem worthy of vast arenas". [5] Clash writer Dannii Leivers categorised the song as "nu-emo", [6] while Anita Bhagwandas of the NME compared its style to that of The Cure. [7] Gould has claimed that the chorus was intended to sound like a "downtown musical", and that the song is "one of the most fun" to perform live. [8]

Promotion and release

On 11 December 2016, "Hiding with Boys" received its worldwide premiere on the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter. [9] The song was released as a digital download the following day, alongside a music video for the track. [2] The video was filmed in Southampton and directed by Jamie Carter, who also worked on "Suzanne" and later "Black Rain". [10] Summarising the content of the music video, Cat Velez of Promo News explained that "Our troubled protagonist is a middle-aged man, haunted by demons visible to him for mere seconds before dissapearing[ sic ] out of sight – but not out of mind". [10] The protagonist in question is paranormal investigator James Scythe, the fictional subject of the lyrical concept of Eternity, in Your Arms, [1] who is "stalked" by the titular subject of the band's 2016 EP The Stranger . [11] "Hiding with Boys" serves as the first in a trilogy of narratively-linked videos for the album, which continued on "Black Rain". [10]

Critical reception

Media response to "Hiding with Boys" was positive. Stephen Ackroyd of Upset magazine described it as "another 10/10 amazing track" following previous single "Suzanne", praising it as "an arms aloft anthem that proves exactly why Creeper are the most exciting rock band in, y'know, like, forever". [12] Kerrang! Radio claimed that the song "proves why Creeper are one of the most hotly tipped acts around". [5] In her review of Eternity, in Your Arms, Clash writer Dannii Leivers praised the song's "fantastic chorus". [6]

Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. Our Time Down Here was an English punk rock band from Southampton, England, formed in 2006. Their song "Black Ice & Bad Advice" from the album Midnight Mass gained radio play on BBC Radio. NME said, in reference to the band's debut album, "if there's a finer UK hardcore album released this year then I'd really, really really like to hear it". Vice Media referred to them as "UK punk's best-kept secret". Funeral for a Friend lead vocalist Matthew Davies-Kreye and Natives member Jack Fairbrother were outspoken supporters of the band. After the band's separation in 2013, Gould and Miles went on to form Creeper.

Higher Power (band)

Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album and one demo. Their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, was their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.

<i>Eternal Blue</i> (album) 2021 studio album by Spiritbox

Eternal Blue is the debut studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Spiritbox. It was released on September 17, 2021, through the band's own Pale Chord Records in partnership with Rise Records. Work began in 2018 and 2019 but was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the album release initially slated for April 2020. Spiritbox relocated to Joshua Tree, California, and completed the songwriting process for the album, which Dan Braunstein and the band's guitarist Mike Stringer produced. The recording was finished by Braunstein in February 2021. Eternal Blue contains an array of metal genres and subgenres with electronic elements as part of Spiritbox's dynamic, while singer Courtney LaPlante employs both screamed and clean vocals.
