Himanshu Rai is an Indian management expert, professor, speaker and writer. He is the Director of Indian Institute of Management, Indore. [1] He also serves as a professor of Strategic Business Negotiations, Leadership through Literature and Justice, ethics and Morality at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow. [2]
Himanshu Rai attended the National Institute of Technology Karnataka between 1987 and 1991 where he obtained a BE in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Between 2000 and 2005 he obtained a PhD from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad where his thesis focused on Morphology of conflict resolution and negotiation. [3]
Rai began his career in 1991 starting as a graduate trainee and later assuming the role of Asst. Manager for Corporate Communications and Electrical Operations at Tata Steel. He was with Tata Steel until 2000, during which he played a crucial role in refining the company's communication strategies and overseeing the efficient operations of the electrical department. [4]
Rai began his academic career in 2005 as a faculty staff at the XLRI – Xavier School of Management. In 2006, he joined the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow as a faculty staff in HR. [5] He served as a faculty staff till August 2014. [6] In September 2014, he joined SDA Bocconi School of Management as a full time professor. He was appointed Dean at the MISB Bocconi where he served till 2016. [7]
In September 2016, he resumed teaching at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow where he taught Strategic Business Negotiations, Leadership through Literature and Justice, Ethics and Morality. In December 2018, he was appointed director of the Indian Institute of Management, Indore. Rai's book " Negotiation" published by McGraw Hill Education is a bestseller and his TEDx talk on "Ethical Leadership: Lessons from the Vedas" has won him several awards. [8]
Rai's book titled "Organizational Behaviour" is co-authored with Steven McShane and Mary Ann Von Glinow. He has trained several people in negotiations and leadership. [9] He has also consulted for World Bank and the Government of India where he audited programs sponsored by the Planning Commission of India. He also serves as the chairperson of the board of directors, Indore Management Association and Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Durban University of Technology Business School. [10]

Rai was born in Kanpur, India, to Rajendra Rai and Asha Rani Rai. Raised in modest circumstances, he spent his formative years in Kataura village in Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Rajendra Rai, supplemented the family's income from farming by working at the Indian Ordnance Factory in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His mother Asha Rani Rai served as the Principal of Kanpur Vidyamandir Mahila PG college before retiring. [12]
Rai's early upbringing was shaped by the influence of his maternal grandparents, who had resettled in Kanpur following the partition of India and Pakistan. Rai grew up learning Sanskrit and English together, fostering his interest in literature, writing, and the philosophical underpinnings of Vedic texts. He writes and speaks on the philosophy of Indian scriptures in Sanskrit, Hindi and English. [13] [3]
From a young age, Rai's roots in yoga have grounded him, shaping his belief in the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. Guided by this philosophy, he shares his expertise, teaching yoga to others and organizing workshops to spread its ancient wisdom. Rai is a trained mountaineer having been taught by the mountaineering legend Bachendri Pal, India's first woman to conquer Everest. Scaling peaks like Everest Base Camp, Rudragaira, Kala Patthar and Chandrashila, Rai is a regular climber. In 2022, Rai summited Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest self standing mountain in the world. Rai's interests include performing arts, particularly theatre and music. He recently gave his voice to the Swachhata Anthem for Ayodhya. [15] He is a mountaineer and has climbed several peaks, the latest being Mt. Kilimanjaro. [16]
Rai writes regular columns and articles in English, Hindi and Sanskrit. As a motivational speaker, Rai has been acknowledged as being among the top 10 motivational speakers in India and 25 most influential voices on LinkedIn. His TEDx Talk, along with sessions on leadership and negotiation for senior Indian bureaucrats, senior armed forces personnel, and multinationals have been highly commended. He has trained government officials of several countries including Cambodia, Mongolia, Ivory Coast, Africa, as well as foreign services officers of multiple countries. [17] [18]
Rai has contributed to the academic field, with over 40 papers and chapters published in peer-reviewed journals and books. His research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including negotiation, cross-cultural issues, management, religion, spirituality, gender, influence tactics, [19] 360-degree feedback, [20] recruitment advertising, and proxemics. [21] He is an expert of Sanskrit literature, he has also written about and given discourses on Indian and Western philosophy, which he avidly studies. His research always has a strong underpinning of philosophy and its elements. His research exploring the measurement of spirituality through an analysis of Vedic literature won him the best in-session presentation award at a conference in Costa Rica. [22]
