The University of North Carolina is the multi-campus public university system for the state of North Carolina. Overseeing the state's 16 public universities and the NC School of Science and Mathematics,it is commonly referred to as the UNC System to differentiate it from its flagship,UNC-Chapel Hill.

On March 3,2006,Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar intentionally hit people with a sport utility vehicle on the campus of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to "avenge the deaths of Muslims worldwide" and to "punish" the United States government. While no one was killed in the vehicle-ramming attack,nine people were injured.

Kevin Guskiewicz is an American academic administrator who is President-Elect of Michigan State University and finished his tenure as the 12th chancellor and 30th chief executive of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on December 15,2023. He gained prominence as a neuroscientist,sports medicine researcher,and Kenan Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is one of the Principal Investigators of the Injury Prevention Research Center,and directs the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center. He is a 2011 MacArthur Fellow. On January 1,2016,he became Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill. On February 6,2019,he was announced as interim chancellor,and on December 13,2019,he was named chancellor by the UNC Board of Governors. On December 8,2023 the Michigan State University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint Guskiewicz as the 22nd president of the university. He will begin his term on March 4,2024.
Buck Goldstein is the Entrepreneur in Residence and Professor of Practice in the Department of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Carol Lynn Folt is an American academic administrator who is the 12th president of the University of Southern California. She is also the first female president in the university’s 142-year history. She assumed her duties on July 1,2019. She was previously the 11th chancellor,and the 29th chief executive,of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,the first woman to hold the post. Prior to that,she was provost and interim president of Dartmouth College. On January 14,2019,she announced her resignation as UNC chancellor.
The University of North Carolina academic-athletic scandal involved alleged fraud and academic dishonesty committed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Following a lesser scandal that began in 2010 involving academic fraud and improper benefits with the university's football program,two hundred questionable classes offered by the university's African and Afro-American Studies department came to light. As a result,the university was placed on probation by its accrediting agency.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill football scandal is an incident in which the football program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was investigated and punished for multiple violations of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations,including academic fraud and improper benefits to student-athletes from sports agents. The NCAA investigation found that a tutor had completed coursework for several football players,among other improper services. Additionally,the investigation found that seven football players received thousands of dollars in valuables from sports agents or people associated with agents. The NCAA sanctions led to a postseason ban,a reduction of 15 scholarships,and three years of probation. It was the second major infraction case in North Carolina's history and the first since the men's basketball program was sanctioned in 1960 for recruiting violations.
Jonathan Howes was an American politician and urban planner. He served as the director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1970 until 1993. Howes began his political career as an elected member of the Chapel Hill Town Council from 1975 to 1987. He was then elected Mayor of Chapel Hill for two consecutive terms from 1987 to 1991. In 1991,North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt appointed Howes as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources,a state cabinet position he held from 1992 to 1997.
Royce W. Murray was an American chemist and chemistry professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests were focused on electrochemistry,molecular designs,and sensors. He published over 440 peer-reviewed articles in analytical,physical,inorganic,and materials chemistry,and trained 72 Ph.D students,16 master’s students,and 58 postdoctoral fellows,45 of whom have gone on to university faculty positions. He was named a fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2012,and was the inventor on three patents related to surface-modified electrodes.
Mark H. Schoenfisch is an American analytical chemist. He is the Peter A. Ornstein Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is jointly appointed with the institution's Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. His research interests include analytical sensors,biomaterials,and the development of macromolecular nitric oxide release scaffolds as novel therapeutics. Intellectual property originating from his research group is the basis of technology being commercialized by Novan,Diabetic Health,and Vast Therapeutics located in the Research Triangle Park.
James Warren Dean Jr. is the current president of the University of New Hampshire since June 30,2018. Dean earned his Ph.D. and master’s degrees in organizational behavior from Carnegie Mellon University,as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Catholic University Of America.
Nelson Ferebee Taylor was an American lawyer and educational administrator who served as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1972 to 1980.
