Howard Hu is an American physician-scientist, internist, and specialist in preventive medicine and environmental health. He is currently the Flora L. Thornton Chair and Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He previously taught at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, University of Michigan School of Public Health, and University of Toronto, where he served as founding dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Hu has served on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Human Rights, where he was involved in four of the nonprofit's fact-finding missions. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Hu was born to Chinese immigrant parents. His mother grew up in Europe as the daughter of a Chinese diplomat. His father worked as an engineer and encouraged Howard to pursue medicine although his "first love was English literature." [4] [5] Hu's interest in environmental and occupational health was sparked at an early age after he was exposed to asbestos while working as a torch burner at a shipyard. [6] [5]

Hu attended Brown University where he studied Biology and graduated with a B.Sc. in 1976. He completed his M.D. at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his M.P.H at the Harvard School of Public Health, both in 1980. He subsequently completed an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in epidemiology at Harvard in 1986 and 1990, respectively. [7]

Career

From 1988 to 2006, Hu was affiliated with the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School/Brigham & Women's Hospital and the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard School of Public Health. In 2006, he was recruited to the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where he held dual appointments in Epidemiology and Medicine. From 2009 to 2012 he held the NSF International Endowed Department Chair at the university. [3]

In 2012, he was appointed Director and Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. [8] In 2013, the school became a faculty with Hu serving as founding Dean. Hu held the position until 2017. [9] After spending two years as Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Hu joined the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine as chair of the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences. Human rights work

Hu serves on the Advisory Council of Physicians for Human Rights, US-based human rights NGO that uses medicine and science to document and advocate against human rights violations worldwide. He has participated in four of PHR's fact finding missions which focused on tear gas use in South Korea (1987), [10] use of chemical weapons against Iraqi Kurds (1988), [11] violations of medical neutrality in Burma (1990), and potentially toxic effects of mining operations on indigenous Mam people in Western Guatemala (2009). [12] [13]

Hu additionally served as chair of the Research Commission for International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. [12]

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is the public health school of Harvard University, located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts. The school grew out of the Harvard-MIT School for Health Officers, the nation's first graduate training program in population health, which was founded in 1913 and then became the Harvard School of Public Health in 1922.

The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California teaches and trains physicians, biomedical scientists and other healthcare professionals, conducts medical research, and treats patients. Founded in 1885, it is the second oldest medical school in California after the UCSF School of Medicine.

He is a retired rear admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and public health administrator who served as the acting Surgeon General of the United States from October 1, 2007 – October 1, 2009. He served concurrently as acting Assistant Secretary for Health from January 22, 2009 to June 25, 2009, and as the Deputy Director and Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) at the Food and Drug Administration from 2001 to 2007. As the Acting Surgeon General, he was the commander of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and, while serving as the Assistant Secretary for Health, was the operational head of the Public Health Service.

Dalla Lana School of Public Health is the school of public health at the University of Toronto. It was founded in 1927, and was home for 50 years to Connaught Laboratories, a manufacturer of vaccines, insulin, and many other pharmaceutical products. Having grown to be the largest cluster of public health scholars in Canada, the school was revitalized in 2008 with the support of a major gift from the Dalla Lana family.

Howard Haym Hiatt is a medical researcher involved with the discovery of messenger RNA, past chair from 1963-1972 of the department of medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, past dean from 1972–1984 of the Harvard School of Public Health, and co-founder and associate chief of the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he also helped to launch and for this past decade has been the Associate Chief of the hospital's Division of Global Health Equity, and a founding head of the cancer division of Beth Israel Hospital. He was a member of the team at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, led by Francois Jacob and Jacques Monod which first identified and described messenger RNA, and he was part of the team led by James Watson that was among the first to demonstrate messenger RNA in mammalian cells. Hiatt was married for 60 years to Doris Bieringer, a librarian who co-founded a reference publication for high school libraries. Hiatt is a member of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

Barry R. Bloom is Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor and Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson Professor of Public Health in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases and Department of Global Health and Population in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, where he served as dean of the faculty from 1998 through December 31, 2008.

Jonathan Michael Samet is an American pulmonary physician and epidemiologist who serves as dean of the Colorado School of Public Health. He is also the chair of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee of the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration.

Zulfiqar A. Bhutta trained as a physician in Pakistan in the early stages of his career. He holds titles across various organizations in diverse geographies. Professor Bhutta is the Founding Director of the Center of Excellence in Women and Child Health & Institute for Global Child Health & Development, at the Aga Khan University South-Central Asia, East Africa & United Kingdom.

Vivek Goel is the current President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. As a physician and public health researcher, he was also a university administrator, and served as a special advisor to the president and provost of the University of Toronto, and as a professor for the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Laura C. A. Rosella is a Canadian epidemiologist who is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health in the University of Toronto. She studies public health and the social determinants of health. Rosella holds a Canada Research Chair in Population Health Analytics.
