Howard Alexander Whiddett is a music producer, composer, musician, and DJ.
Whiddett grew up in Herne Bay, Kent. He attended Herne Bay High School. The Cubase package on the school's Pentium computers gave him early experience in recording, arranging and producing music. [1]
Whiddett was part of the electronic duo QTIER, formed in 2012, playing bass and Ableton Live. [2] Their debut track "Still" released in January 2013, [3] as part of a four-track EP of the same name. Another four-track EP, The Cards, was released by Berlin label BPitch Control later in 2013, described by JP Beauvallet for Les Inrockuptibles as "offering an alternative to all ideas of reality." [4] A third EP, Set Me On, was released in 2014.
In February 2017, Whiddett joined acid-jazz funk group Jamiroquai on their ‘Automaton’ world tour onward, performing using live electronics, specialising in Ableton Live. He has been a band member since then. [5]
Under the name Sandancer, he released 'Radial', featuring vocalist Theo Ogundipe (most notable for starring as Rueben from the series Top Boy) in April 2023. [6]
For Pigeons and Planes, "Qtier have an appreciation of space and subtlety in their music, whilst there are also hints of the experimental quirkiness." [3] Whiddett's style was described by DIY magazine as haunting and subtle. [7] Music Crowns described his work on the 2023 track Radial as merging "impactful synths, grooving bass lines and disorienting sound effects", [8] while Simon Lucas-Hughes for Backseat Mafia commented on its "affecting, minimal electronic soundscapes." [9]
Whiddett described his role in Jamiroquai, in an interview with fan site Jamirotalk, in terms of supplying strong electronic musical elements: "it can vary from sampling, running loops, sound fx and fx manipulation, playing synths to running and manipulating tempo. It's sort of like using electronics to play the parts that conventional instruments can’t." [2]
