Pharo Secondary School,Sheikh is situated near the town of Sheikh in a remote part of the country Somaliland,and a three-hour drive from the country's capital,Hargeisa. The once-renowned boarding school was established in British Somaliland and at independence was considered one of the top schools in the country. It is the birth-place of Somalia's former anthem,Soomaaliyeey toosoo,which was composed by the teachers of Sheikh Secondary School. The school accepted a mere 50 students each year for the 31 years (1958–89) before it was destroyed by the Siad Barre regime,admitting 1,550 people over three decades. It was mostly destroyed in fighting in 1989,and had fallen into further disrepair during the Somali Civil War.
Hussein Ali Dualeh,commonly known as Awil,is a Somali diplomat and politician who served as the Finance Minister of Somaliland,and former ambassador of the Somali Democratic Republic to Kenya and Uganda. Dualeh was appointed as presidential advisor on Foreign Affairs and International Recognition to Somaliland to former President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud and Senior Adviser to the President Muse Bihi Abdi to negotiate with Somalia. He is considered a great expert on the affairs of the Horn of Africa.
The Awal,also contemporarily known as the Habr Awal,Subeer Awal,and alternately known as the Zubeyr Awal is one of the largest subclans of the wider Isaaq clan family,and is further divided into eight sub-clans of whom the two largest and most prominent are the Isamusa and Sa'ad Musa sub-clans. Its members form a part of the Habar Magadle confederation.

The Isaaq Sultanate was a Muslim sultanate that ruled parts of the Horn of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The kingdom spanned the territories of the Isaaq clan in modern-day Somaliland. It was governed by the Rer Guled branch of the Garhajis clan and is the pre-colonial predecessor to the modern Republic of Somaliland.
Somaliland and the United States do not have official diplomatic relations. While Somaliland operates a representative liaison office in Washington,D.C.,it does not have formal diplomatic status under the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Both countries do maintain contact as delegations from both sides have met in the past.
