A shotgun is a long-barreled firearm designed to shoot a straight-walled cartridge known as a shotshell, which discharges numerous small spherical projectiles called shot, or a single solid projectile called a slug. Shotguns are most commonly used as smoothbore firearms, meaning that their gun barrels have no rifling on the inner wall, but rifled barrels for shooting sabot slugs are also available.
A bullpup firearm is one with its firing grip located in front of the breech of the weapon, instead of behind it. This creates a weapon with a shorter overall length for a given barrel length, and one that is often lighter, more compact, concealable and more maneuverable than a conventionally configured firearm. Where it is desirable for troops to be issued a more compact weapon, the use of a bullpup configuration allows for barrel length to be retained, thus preserving muzzle velocity, range and ballistic effectiveness.
The Pancor Corporation Jackhammer is a 12-gauge, blow-forward gas-operated bullpup automatic shotgun designed in 1984 and patented in 1987. Only three working prototypes of the Jackhammer were built. Kel-Tec is a privately owned Florida corporation. The High Standard Model 10 (HS10) is a gas operated, semi-automatic shotgun that was manufactured by the High Standard Manufacturing Company of Hamden, Connecticut. It is easily recognized by its bullpup design, rotatable shoulder stock, and integrated flashlight.
The Browning Automatic 5, most often Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by John Browning and manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. The Hawk Industries Type 97 is the factory and official Chinese military and police designation of a shotgun design patterned after the Remington Model 870, and manufactured by Hawk Industries, a division of the China North Industries Corporation. The Type 97 is the base designation attributed to a variety of models with multiple configurations to suit different purposes and applications.
The Remington Versa Max, also styled as VERSA MAX, is a gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun introduced by Remington Arms in 2010. It is chambered to use 12 gauge shells of 2+3⁄4 inches (7.0 cm), 3 inches (7.6 cm), and 3+1⁄2 inches (8.9 cm) in length. It was named the shotgun of the year for 2011 by American Rifleman.
