Iais californica is an isopod species in the Janiridae family. [1] The species has a commensal relationship with another isopod, Sphaeroma quoyanum. [2]
Isopoda is an order of crustacean, which includes woodlice and their relatives. Members of this group are called Isopods and include both terrestrial and aquatic species. All have rigid, segmented exoskeletons, two pairs of antennae, seven pairs of jointed limbs on the thorax, and five pairs of branching appendages on the abdomen that are used in respiration. Females brood their young in a pouch under their thorax.

It is 8–10 millimetres (0.31–0.39 in) long, and is thought to have been introduced by wooden-hulled ships. The isopod is found throughout the Gulf of Mexico mainly in mangrove swamps of Louisiana and Florida. S. terebrans will also bore into boats, wooden pilings and other wooden structures.

It was described from Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island in 1938 and has since then been found in other locations on the north shores of Long Island and Cape Cod. It can be told from the similar Sphaeroma quadridentatum by the presence of two tubercles on the telson and the unserrated outer margin of the outer uropod branch. This species tends to be found in places of the intertidal zone where there is a direct influence with fresh water, such as seeps and pond outlets.

Because they inhabit intertidal zones such as estuaries, their adaptation to diurnal variations in factors such as salinity are often studied.
Sphaeroma pulchellum is a species of isopod in the family Sphaeromatidae. It can be found in the Black Sea where it curls into small spheres on the sandy benthos.
