Ian Alan Chipchase (born 26 February 1952) is an English former track and field athlete who competed in the hammer throw. [1] He was the gold medallist in the event at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games with a games' record performance. His career best was 71.00 m (232 ft 11+1⁄4 in), set in 1974.

Career

Chipchase was born in Hebburn in the north of England. [2] He rose to prominence at national level as a junior in 1969 when he won the English Schools Championships, AAA Junior Championships and the British Schools International Match. He retained all of those titles for following year. [3] [4] [5] His international championship debut came at the 1970 European Athletics Junior Championships, where he placed eighth with a mark of 57.76 m (189 ft 6 in). [6]

His first senior hammer throw title at the North of England Athletics Championships was achieved while he was still a teenager in 1970. He would go on to take that title six times over his career. [7] He set a British junior record of 64.14 m (210 ft 5 in) in the 1971 season. This stood for eight years until it was beaten by Martin Girvan. [8] He continued to compete while entering higher education and was a three-time champion consecutively at the Universities Athletic Union Championships from 1971 to 1973. [9] At the 1973 AAA Championships he placed third behind Britain's most dominant throwers and 1972 Olympians, Howard Payne and Barry Williams. [10]

Chipchase's career peaked in the 1974 season. He was chosen to represent England at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games and held off both Howard Payne and Peter Farmer to win the gold medal. He improved the previous games record three time during the competition, ending with a best of 69.56 m (228 ft 2+1⁄2 in). [11] [12] That August he set a personal best of 71.00 m (232 ft 11+1⁄4 in) in Edinburgh – a mark which placed him among Britain's best ever throwers at that point, behind Barry Williams, Paul Dickenson and Chris Black. [13] He competed at the 1974 European Athletics Championships, coming tenth in a field dominated by Soviet and German athletes. [14]

He made only one major international appearance after 1974 – a sixth-place finish at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. [15] He was competitive domestically until the early 1980s, and his achievements include two titles at the Inter-Counties Championships (1978, 1980) [16] and a third place at the 1981 UK Athletics Championships. [17]

Chipchase married Dorothy Swinyard, also an English Commonwealth Games representative. [11]

He holds the British record of 80.26 m for the event.

Ikem G Billy is a British former middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 metres. He was the bronze medallist at the 1985 IAAF World Indoor Games and a silver medallist at the 1989 Summer Universiade. He was a two-time national champion, with one win outdoors and one indoors. He represented his country at the IAAF World Indoor Championships on two occasions and England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Susan Mary Platt is a British former track and field athlete who competed for England and Great Britain in the javelin throw. She was a three-time Olympian and competed three times at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. She had a personal best of 55.60 m and was Commonwealth champion in 1962.

John Henry FitzSimons is a British former track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He was the gold medallist at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, winning with a games record throw of 79.78 m. He is a former British record holder and was the first British man to throw the javelin beyond eighty metres. His personal best is 81.92 m.

Colin George Smith was a British former track and field athlete who specialised in the javelin throw. He was the gold medallist in the event at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, setting a games record mark of 71.29 m to win the title. He returned to defend his title in 1962 and was much improved with a lifetime best throw of 77.94 m, but he was beaten into the silver medal position by Australia's Alf Mitchell.

Andrea Joan Caron Lynch is a British former track and field sprinter who competed mainly in the 100 metres. A two-time Olympian, the peak of her career was becoming a bronze medallist in the 100 m at the 1974 European Championships and a double silver medallist in the 100 m and 4 × 100 metres relay at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. The 1982 UK Athletics Championships was the national championship in outdoor track and field for the United Kingdom held at Cwmbran Stadium, Cwmbran. It was the second time the event was held in the Welsh town, following on from the 1977 UK Athletics Championships. The women's 5000 metres race walk was dropped from the programme for this championship.
