Isaac Anderson (born December 22, 1957) is an American former Greco-Roman wrestler who competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics at 62 kg. He was also a former Greco-Roman developmental coach for USA Wrestling. [1] [2] In 2024, he was honored with the Lifetime Service to Wresting Award for the South Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. [3]
Anderson attended Lower Richland High School in Hopkins, South Carolina. As a high school wrestler, he was a South Carolina state champion in 1975.
He attend Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he was a Southern Conference wrestling champion and qualified for the NCAA wrestling championships. He earned degrees in recreation and physical education. [4] Anderson also wrestled for Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. [5] In 1990, he was inducted into the Appalachian State Athletics Hall of Fame. [6]
Anderson represented the United States at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea as a Greco-Roman wrestler at 62 kg, where he finished 6th. [4] He won three U.S. National titles in Greco-Roman wrestling, was a national runner-up four times, and took silver at 62 kg at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. He also earned medals at the Wrestling World Cup and the Pan American Wrestling Championships. [4] [7]
Cael Norman Sanderson is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler who is the current head coach of Penn State's wrestling team. As a wrestler, he won an Olympic gold medal and was undefeated in four years of college wrestling at Iowa State (159–0), becoming a four-time NCAA Division I champion (1999–2002).
David Lesley Schultz was an American Olympic and World champion freestyle wrestler, and a seven-time World and Olympic medalist. He coached individuals and teams at the college level and also privately.
Dennis William Hall is an American former Greco-Roman wrestler. Hall was a 10-time US National Champion, a World Champion, and 3-time USA Olympian. He won a silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Benjamin Lee "Ben" Peterson is a retired American freestyle wrestler. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won a gold and a silver medal, respectively. As a college wrestler, Peterson was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State. He founded the "Camp of Champs," which brought in Olympic wrestlers to train with high schoolers. Peterson also coached wrestling at Maranatha Baptist University for 28 years.
Kevin Andre Jackson is an American retired freestyle and folkstyle wrestler, and mixed martial artist. Following his competitive career, Jackson would become a wrestling coach.
Siamak "Matt" Ghaffari is an Iranian-born American Greco-Roman wrestler, MMA Fighter and professional wrestler. Ghaffari was a two-time USA Olympic team member, obtaining a silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games. Ghaffari finished his career with the most Greco-Roman World and Olympic medals by a United States wrestler. Ghaffari is considered the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler in American history, and is regarded as the standard for Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States.
William Michael Zadick is an American amateur wrestler. He won an NCAA college wrestling championship while competing with the University of Iowa and a gold medal at the 2006 World Wrestling Championships in freestyle wrestling.
Lee Dale Allen was an American wrestler and wrestling coach.
Dremiel Deshon Byers is an American former Greco-Roman wrestler. Byers joined the U.S. Army World Class Athletes Program (WCAP) in 1997 and was the 2002 World Champion in Greco-Roman wrestling at 120 kg. In total, Byers won three World medals and was a two-time Olympian. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 2021.
Spenser Mango is an American Greco-Roman wrestler. He has represented the United States in numerous international competitions including the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he competed in the 55 kg weight class. He won his first match against Romanian, Virgil Munteanu, before losing the South Korean, Park Eun-chul.
Kevin Bracken is an American Greco-Roman wrestler who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he finished 6th place at 63 kg. He is currently the Head Coach of the Olympian Wrestling Club, Castle Rock, Colorado.
Thomas Curtis "T. C." DantzlerJr. is an American Greco-Roman wrestler, who competed for the men's 74-kg category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He is a two-time U.S national champion, five-time U.S. world wrestling team member, and a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is also a two-time bronze medalist at the Pan American Games.
Bob Anderson is an American former wrestler and coach. Anderson was born in Oakland, California and raised in Redondo Beach, California.
Alan Rice is an American former wrestler and coach. He competed in the men's Greco-Roman featherweight at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He was also a silver medalist at the 1955 Pan American Games in freestyle wrestling, competing in the 63 kg weight class. He was an AAU national champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Rice wrestled collegiately at the University of Minnesota, where he was an NCAA All-American in 1949.
Howard Michael Stupp is a Canadian former wrestler. An Olympian, he won five Canadian championships, two Pan Am Games titles, two Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union championships, and four titles at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. After graduating from McGill University, he worked at the International Olympic Committee, including 35 years as the Director of Legal Affairs.
Steven Mays is an American wrestler. He competed in the men's Greco-Roman 54 kg at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Mays was a bronze medalist in the men's Greco-Roman 54 kg event at the 1999 Pan American Games. He competed on the All Navy Greco-Roman team from 1987–2001. In 2012, Mays was honored with the Outstanding American award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Michigan Chapter.
Andre Metzger is an American former wrestler. He competed at 62 and 68 kilograms in freestyle wrestling, where he racked up numerous medals from the World Championships and the World Cup, as well as championships from the Pan American Games. In college, Metzger was a two-time NCAA Division I National champion and a four-time All-American at the University of Oklahoma.
James Lee Johnson was an American Greco-Roman wrestler and coach. As an athlete, he won a gold medal at the Pan American Championships in 1986 and was a member of three US Greco-Roman World Teams. Johnson later served as the head Greco-Roman coach for the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and was a coach for the US Greco-Roman 2012 Olympic team.
Mike Houck is an American former Greco-Roman wrestler. In 1985, he became the first American to win a World Championship in Greco-Roman wrestling, winning the 90 kg title. In 2008, Houck was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member.
Bob Walker is an American former Greco-Roman wrestler. He won a bronze medal at the 1979 World Wrestling Championships in the +100 kg weight class.
