"Immaterial" is a song recorded by the English musician Sophie. It is the eighth track from her debut studio album, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides , released on 15 June 2018.

Background and composition

"Immaterial" features lead vocals from Cecile Believe, who co-wrote it with Sophie. Sophie felt that it was the most mainstream of all Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides tracks. [1] The track was described as hyperpop. [1] [2] Sources described "Immaterial" as a reference to the Madonna song "Material Girl"; [3] [4] Sophie had initially titled it "Immaterial Girl" for a direct reference. [3]

"Immaterial" was named one of the best songs of 2018 by The Fader , [5] Noisey ( Vice ), [6] PopMatters , [7] Tiny Mix Tapes , [8] Dazed , [9] Mixmag , [10] NME , [11] Resident Advisor , [12] The 405 , [13] and Jenesaispop . [14] It was featured as one of Sophie's best or most essential songs in lists published by Billboard , [15] The Fader, [4] Junkee, [16] The New York Times , [17] and NME. [18] Rolling Stone Australia ranked it as the 40th greatest dance song of all time. [19] The Forty-Five's Sophie Walker named it the best hyperpop song of all time. [2]

The album was Sophie's second full-length release after the singles collection Product (2015).

Emma Kirby, known as Elkka, is a Welsh producer, vocalist, and DJ. With a background of songwriter and vocalist for Elkka is best known for winning the Essential Mix of the Year (BBC1) in 2021. She is also known as the co-founder of femme culture, which she founded with her partner Alex Lambert, an inclusive queer platform. The label organizes the annual HeForShe compilation, and all profits go to the charity U.N. Women.

"Nothing More to Say" was acclaimed and considered one of Sophie's most essential songs. The single was reissued in early 2022.

<i>All Dogs Go to Heaven</i> (EP) 2021 EP by Glaive

All Dogs Go to Heaven is the second extended play by the American musician Glaive. It was released on August 6, 2021, via Interscope Records. After recording his debut EP Cypress Grove (2020) in his North Carolina bedroom, he recorded All Dogs Go to Heaven in a Los Angeles studio during a two week period. The EP pulls from many genres, as Glaive was simply focused on making music that he liked and wanted to move away from hyperpop. Its title was taken from a book of the same name, which Glaive's mother gave him after the death of his family's dog. All Dogs Go to Heaven was promoted with three singles and a deluxe edition titled Old Dog, New Tricks; the deluxe was promoted with a tour across North America. Production was handled by a variety of record producers, including Travis Barker, Jasper Harris, Nick Mira, and Whethan. The EP received mixed reviews from critics.

<i>Cypress Grove</i> (EP) 2020 EP by Glaive

Cypress Grove is the debut extended play by the American musician Glaive. It was released by Interscope Records on November 19, 2020. After recording music in his bedroom at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Glaive became a leading force of the hyperpop genre and signed a deal with Interscope in October 2020. Though Glaive is categorized as a hyperpop artist, Cypress Grove pulls from multiple other genres. The EP was recorded in Glaive's childhood bedroom in Hendersonville, North Carolina and is named after a street in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The EP gained Glaive a global fanbase and received widespread critical acclaim, several publications featured its lead single "Astrid" on their year-end lists.
