Indian 3 (marketed as Indian 3: War Mode) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language vigilante action film directed by S. Shankar, who co-wrote the screenplay with B. Jeyamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu and Lakshmi Saravana Kumar. Produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, it is the third instalment in the Indian film series and a direct sequel to Indian 2 (2024). [5] [6]
Indian 2 was initially intended to be a single film; however, as the final edited runtime exceeded six hours, the project was split into two parts. Principal photography for both instalments began on 17 January 2019, taking place intermittently over four years across locations including Chennai, Rajahmundry, Bhopal, Gwalior, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Johannesburg and Taiwan. Production faced delays due to a fatal crane accident in 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical crew includes composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Ravi Varman (with preliminary portions by R. Rathnavelu), editor A. Sreekar Prasad, production designer T. Muthuraj and VFX supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan. [7]
After escaping from the police, Senapathy treats Pramod after paralysing him. He then reaches the Barking Dogs’ hideout and introduces his parents, Veerasekaran Balram and Dhakshayini, both freedom fighters during the British Raj in the 1890s. Senapathy then sets out to bring change across India with the help of Chitra and his associates, targeting corrupt officials nationwide. Eventually, he is arrested and sentenced to death, prompting nationwide protests demanding his release.
Although Indian 2 was planned as a standalone film, co-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin stated in June 2023 that discussions for a sequel had begun. [8] In July, reports confirmed that the film had been split into two parts as the total footage ran over six hours. [9] Ananda Vikatan reported in October 2023 that 80% of the footage for Indian 3 had been completed, with around 25 shooting days pending. [10]
On 24 March 2024, Kamal Haasan confirmed the film, stating that Indian 3 was shot alongside Indian 2. [11] In July 2024, reports suggested that reshoots were underway following mixed responses to Indian 2. [12]
Early reports claimed that the film would skip theatres for a direct streaming release. Shankar denied these rumours, confirming that the film will release theatrically. [13]
In January 2025, Shankar shared that production delays were ongoing and expected the film to be completed within six months. [14] As of November 2025, the film remains unreleased.
