Indian Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located at the intersection of Highland Drive and Caraway Road in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The location was close in proximity to the junction of Interstate 555 and Arkansas Highway 1.
For more than thirty years, Indian Mall was the only shopping center serving Northeast Arkansas. The nearby opening of The Mall at Turtle Creek in 2006 drew many tenants away from Indian Mall, including the Dillard's and JCPenney anchors. Indian Mall then became a dead mall, losing all of its tenants except for Sears, an insurance office and a GameStop which remained for nearly two years. As of February 2008, the mall has been closed off except for Sears, and was demolished for a Kroger in 2012.
Indian Mall opened in 1968 [2] [3] as a shopping destination for Jonesboro and northeastern Arkansas. It was also the second mall in the state (the first being Phoenix Village Mall in Fort Smith). [4] Indian Mall derived its name from the name of nearby Arkansas State University's mascot. [5]
The mall first opened as a small shopping center with Blass (a chain owned by Dillard's; the store was later re-branded Dillard's), TG&Y, Sears, and a supermarket called Stimson's. The mall sustained heavy damage during a series of tornadoes that struck the city on May 27, 1973. [6] JCPenney was added in 1976. TG&Y closed in the 1980s; Dillard's then moved its men's wear and home goods to the former TG&Y space. The supermarket space was converted to a food court in the 1980s as well.
Indian Mall was used to host various events including athletic team appearances and signings [7] as well as fundraisers for different organizations across the state and country. [8] [9]
In 1998, shortly after the Westside Middle School shooting, Indian Mall received significant press coverage as the location where Rev. Phillip McClure, a local pastor, started ministering to people. [10]
Until 2006, Indian Mall was the only mall serving northeastern Arkansas. It featured a variety of national chain tenants, including The Gap, Waldenbooks, Sam Goody, KB Toys, and Dollar Tree. [11]
As early as 1994, rumors circulated on the arrival of a newer, larger mall to serve the expanding city. [5] Two mall proposals eventually surfaced, one of the proposals being made by Indian Mall's owner, Warmack & Company. Warmack's proposal, dubbed Southern Hills Mall, was to feature a similar tenant roster to the Indian Mall. Southern Hills Mall was also slated to include newer, larger stores for JCPenney, Dillard's, and Sears, in addition to a new Target; the Indian Mall would then be converted to non-retail use under this plan. Meanwhile, David Hocker & Associates, a company based in Kentucky, was also proposing a new mall, called The Mall at Turtle Creek; this proposed mall was also to feature Dillard's among its anchors. Due to a variety of issues, Warmack's Southern Hills Mall never materialized. However, The Mall at Turtle Creek did open in 2006, including a new Dillard's and a new JCPenney among its anchors. As a result, JCPenney closed its store at Indian Mall, and the Dillard's at Indian Mall was converted to a clearance center (with the Dillard's Men's store closing entirely). [12] Similarly, many of the older mall's tenants re-located to the Mall at Turtle Creek. The site where Southern Hills Mall would have been built has since been put up for sale. [13]
In August 2007, MBC Holdings entered into talks with the Warmack Company to purchase the Indian Mall. [14] MBC Holdings plans on destructing most of the site and then developing it into additional retail space. [15] The deal is contingent on several areas. One is the city of Jonesboro's willingness to allow more retail development and plans for the stores that still occupy the Indian mall and have multi-year leases. [14] [15]
MBC Holdings LLC closed on the property in late 2007. The mall closed February 2008, and was demolished in March 2012. In June 2013, a request was approved to tear down the mall and replace it with a Kroger store. [16]
On December 28, 2016, it was announced that Sears would be closing as part of a plan to close 30 stores nationwide. The store closed in April 2017. [17] The auto center closed on October 14, 2017. [18]
Hanes Mall is a shopping mall located off I-40 via the Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard exits, on Silas Creek Parkway. Hanes Mall Boulevard in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Hanes Mall Boulevard, the road named after the mall, has become a very high traffic count area with over 250 businesses stretching over 2.9 miles. The mall has 1,435,164 square feet (133,331 m2) GLA and has 3 anchor stores and over 170 tenants in all.
Southern Park is a shopping mall in Boardman, Ohio, United States, serving the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area. It was developed by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation in 1970, and is now owned by Washington Prime Group. The mall, which is the largest shopping destination in Mahoning County, has approximately 1,018,400 square feet (94,610 m2) of space. Its anchor stores are JCPenney and Macy's, with junior anchors H&M, Shoe Dept. Encore, and Planet Fitness.
Southwest Center Mall, formerly Red Bird Mall, is a shopping mall located in Dallas, Texas. Originally owned by the DeBartolo family, it opened in 1975. It was, and remains, the only major one located in the southern half of Dallas. Its original name, Red Bird Mall, came from the Red Bird area of Dallas in which it is located.

The Mall at Turtle Creek is an enclosed shopping mall in Jonesboro, Arkansas, that closed in 2020 due to tornado damage. Currently, the only stores in operation at the property are JCPenney, Dillard's and Target. All four bus routes of the Jonesboro Economical Transit system serve the location.

Frontier Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located along Dell Range Blvd in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The single-level, 519,471-square-foot (48,260.4 m2) mall opened March 18, 1981. Managed by CBL & Associates Properties of Chattanooga, Tennessee, it is Wyoming's second largest mall, boasting 67 shops, including six anchor stores: Dillard's, JCPenney, JAX Outdoor Gear, Planet Fitness, Appliance Factory Mattress Kingdom, and Jo-Ann.

The Shoppes at Bel Air, formerly Bel Air Mall, is a super-regional shopping mall, located in Mobile, Alabama, United States. The mall has a gross leasable area of 1,345,000 sq ft (125,000 m2). It is the oldest continuously operating enclosed super-regional mall in Alabama and serves as one of the primary retail venues for the west Mobile shopping district located at the vicinity of Airport Boulevard and Interstate 65. Northwoods Mall is a 101-store super-regional 833,833-square-foot (77,465.6 m2) indoor shopping mall located in North Charleston, South Carolina. It is the second largest indoor shopping mall in the Tri-County area next to Citadel Mall. Built in 1972, the mall is located at the intersection of Rivers Avenue, Ashley Phosphate Road and Interstate 26. Northwoods Mall was the first regional indoor shopping mall constructed in the South Carolina lowcountry and featured Belk, Sears, and the locally owned Kerrison's department stores as its original anchor tenants. Crestwood Court was a shopping mall in Crestwood, Missouri. Opened in 1957, it was the first major mall in the St. Louis area, and one of the first to have more than one department store. The mall previously included Macy's, Dillard's, and Sears as anchor stores, all three of which were vacant for at least 5 years before demolition began in May, 2016, resulting in a "dead mall". Demolition was finished in October 2017. A Dierbergs opened at the site of the demolished mall in March of 2023. Decline was first noticeable in the early 2000s, but took off seriously in 2006, when many stores started to close their doors. The announcement the Dillard's would close in August 2007 was critical, because it was the most popular store. Two years later, Macy's closed, which was considered the ultimate dagger. It was by then assumed that Crestwood Mall was not going to be around much longer, and that became official in September 2013, when the exterior Lens Crafters closed their doors.
Conestoga Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Grand Island, Nebraska. It was opened in 1974 and is owned by Woodsonia Real Estate. The mall's lone anchor store at the time of closure was Best Buy. Previous anchor stores included Sears, Dillard's, Younkers and JCPenney.
