Invertigo were an Australian four-piece pop rock group active in the early 2000s. They originally formed as Vertigo in 1996, by the three Leigh brothers: Gerry (born 10 May 1966) on guitar, James (born 1 December 1967) on keyboards and Vince (born 19 November 1965) on drums (the latter two are former members of Pseudo Echo); together with Hugh Wilson on lead vocals. They had a top 40 hit on the ARIA Singles Chart with "Forever Lately" and released an album before disbanding in 1999. The Leigh brothers formed Invertigo in 2000 with Christian Argenti (born 3 January 1975) on lead vocals. Their highest charting single, "Chances Are...", reached No. 19 and their sole album, Forum , peaked at No. 11. That group broke up in 2003.

Career

1996–1999: Early incarnation (as Vertigo)

Invertigo were originally formed as Vertigo in 1996 in Melbourne, by the three Leigh brothers: Gerry (born Jerome William Dingli, 10 May 1966) on guitar, James (born James Joseph Dingli, 1 December 1967) on keyboards and Vince (born Vincent Paul Dingli, 19 November 1964) on drums; together with Hugh Wilson on lead vocals. [1] [2] James had joined Pseudo Echo in October 1984 on keyboards and Vince (ex-Marginal Era) followed in November 1985 on drums. [1] [2] [3] After that group split in 1989 the Leigh brothers wrote material together and performed in various cover bands. [3]

Vertigo released a single, "Forever Lately", in June 1997 via Gotham/BMG, which peaked at No. 38 on the ARIA Singles Chart. [1] [4] They followed with another single, "Human Need", in November which reached the top 100. [1] [5] The group recorded an album: mixed by Chris Lord-Alge. According to Australian music journalist, Ed Nimmervoll, the Leigh brothers "started falling out with their singer around the time of releasing ['Human Need']. Losing their singer also meant losing their record contract with Gotham." [3] Following the departure of Wilson in 1999, Vertigo disbanded.

2000–2003: Forum (as Invertigo)

The three Leigh brothers advertised for a vocalist: Christian Argenti was the successful applicant; the four-piece formed Invertigo in 2000 in Melbourne. [3] In June of that year their debut single, "Desensitized", reached the top 30. [4] It was performed on the TV variety show, Russell Gilbert Live . A sample of "Desensitized" was featured on the Osmosis Jones Sampler CD. In December they issued their next single, "Chances Are", which became their highest charting when it peaked at No. 19. [4] A third single, "Say You Do", appeared in the top 40 in June 2001.

Invertigo's debut album, Forum , was released on 9 July 2001, which reached No. 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart. [4] [6] Brendan Swift of AllMusic felt it was "a catchy debut that shows signs of promise, but lacks the overall depth required for repeat listens... [with a] mix of slick, catchy, predigested tunes, sung by four good-looking guys." [7] Blender 's J. D. Considine opined that the group were "offering soft-hearted, woolen-headed love songs outfitted with blaring guitars and a muscular, insistent beat. But [their] aesthetic is so unapologetically pop all jangly guitars, orchestral synths and tight, he-man vocal harmonies that the extra volume adds no edge at all." [8] Christian Argenti left the band in February 2003 and the group disbanded later that year. [3]

2003–present: Post-split

Hugh Wilson has worked as a session vocalist, including on jingles for TV ads: "Turn Me on TEN" for Channel Ten's station identification and "I Want My Foxtel" for that network's promotion. [9] The Leigh brothers have been members of various cover bands. James toured with the Idols of the 80s band in 2005, which included former members of Pseudo Echo, 1927, Boom Crash Opera, Kids in the Kitchen, and Uncanny X-Men. [9]

Christian Argenti also worked as a guest vocalist and was later a radio announcer. [9] In March 2009 he started hosting a Melbourne sports radio station, SEN's midnight to dawn program, All Night Appetite. [9] [10] From February 2010 Argenti was the presenter of Talking Back the Night on 92.5 Gold FM in the Gold Coast.

Pseudo Echo are an Australian New wave band formed in 1982 by Brian Canham, Pierre Gigliotti, and Tony Lugton (keyboards). Later members included Anthony Argiro (drums), Vince Leigh (drums), and James Leigh (keyboards). In the 1980s, Pseudo Echo had multiple Australian top 20 hits with "Listening", "A Beat for You", "Don't Go", "Love an Adventure", and "Living in a Dream". Their 1986 cover of "Funky Town" was an international success, peaking at No. 1 in Australia and New Zealand and becoming a top ten hit in Sweden, Canada, the United States, and in the United Kingdom.

Disco Montego was an Australian R&B and dance music trio. The Dowlut brothers Dennis and Darren, together with Tony Vass formed Kaylan in Melbourne in 1995. They released an R&B album No Commandments in 2000, which reached No. 23 in Australia and spawned three top 50 singles. In May 2001, they became the studio based group Disco Montego, and released further singles followed by Disco Montego in September 2002. Their production work included remixing Mariah Carey's "Boy " in 2004.

David Ross Hope Bridie is an Australian contemporary musician and songwriter. He was a founding mainstay member of World music band Not Drowning, Waving which released six studio albums to critical acclaim. He also formed a chamber pop group, My Friend the Chocolate Cake, which released seven studio albums. During his solo career he has issued five studio albums and worked on soundtracks for Australian films and television like The Man Who Sued God, Remote Area Nurse, Secret City, and The Circuit. Bridie is the founder and artistic director of Wantok Musik Foundation; a not-for-profit music label that records, releases and promotes culturally infused music from Indigenous Australia, Melanesia and Oceania. In 2019 he received the Don Banks Music Award.

"Pony" is a country song performed and written by Kasey Chambers and produced by her brother, Nash Chambers for her third album Wayward Angel (2004). It references Ralph Stanley, an American folk, bluegrass, and country music artist. At the APRA Music Awards of 2006 "Pony" won Most Performed Country Work.

<i>Scented Gardens for the Blind</i> 1975 studio album by Dragon

Scented Gardens for the Blind is the second album by New Zealand group Dragon released in February 1975 on Vertigo Records before they relocated to Australia in May. Scented Gardens for the Blind, along with their first album Universal Radio, is in the progressive rock genre—all subsequent albums are hard rock/pop rock. "Vermillion [sic] Cellars" was released as a single in March and was followed by non-album singles, "Education" in May and "Star Kissed" in August but neither albums nor singles had any local chart success.

...ish is the debut album by Australian pop rock band 1927, released on 14 November 1988, which peaked at number one for four weeks in early 1989 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album remained in the top 50 for 46 weeks and reached No. 2 on the 1989 ARIA Year End Albums Chart. The album was awarded 5× platinum certification – for shipment of more than 350,000 copies. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1989, 1927 won 'Breakthrough Artist – Single' for "That's When I Think of You" and 'Breakthrough Artist – Album' for ...ish. Gregory John Macainsh is an Australian former musician and songwriter. He provided bass guitar and backing vocals for pop rockers, Skyhooks from 1973 to 1980 and subsequently for various reformations. According to Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, "Macainsh's biting, provocative songs were the perfect expression of adolescent obsessions and frustrations. With those songs, the band made an enormous impact on Australian social life." Macainsh became an intellectual property lawyer.
