Ibrahim Rugova was a Kosovo-Albanian politician, scholar, and writer, who served as the President of the partially recognised Republic of Kosova, serving from 1992 to 2000 and as President of Kosovo from 2002 until his death in 2006. He oversaw a popular struggle for independence, advocating a peaceful resistance to Yugoslav rule and lobbying for U.S. and European support, especially during the Kosovo War.

Lutfi Haziri is the deputy chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo and former mayor of Gjilan. He headed the delegation of Kosovo in the talks on the political status of Kosovo with Serbia in Vienna, Austria in February 2006.
Skënder Hyseni is a Kosovar Albanian politician who is a former Minister of Internal Affairs and a former foreign minister of Kosovo. Hyseni graduated at the University of Pristina, branch of English Language and Literature in 1979. Hyseni stayed for a short period of time for study purposes in Bloomsburg State College-USA (1978) and in Aberdeen University-Scotland (1986).
Parliamentary elections were held in Kosovo on 12 December 2010, following a vote of no-confidence in the government that brought forward the election. Those were the first elections after the country declared independence.
The 2010 political crisis in Kosovo started when the Constitutional Court of Kosovo stated that the President of Kosovo Fatmir Sejdiu was violating the Constitution of Kosovo, because he was both president of the Republic of Kosovo and also leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). This resulted in Sejdiu stepping down as president on September 27. A new election was announced for December 12, 2010. Jakup Krasniqi became the acting president of Kosovo until the election.
Shpend Ali Ahmeti is a Kosovo Albanian politician who served as the mayor of Pristina. He was leader of the New Spirit Party, which merged into Vetëvendosje in 2011, and served as their vice chairman. However, after internal disputes he left the party in 2018 to become the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Kosovo. In 2019 he became an independent politician.
Pristina is the capital city of Kosovo. In the preliminary results of the 2011 census the population of Pristina was around 198,000. The majority of the population is Albanian, but there are also smaller communities including Bosniaks, Serbs, Romani and others. The surface of Pristina is 854 km2. Pristina is known as the center of cultural, economical and political developments. The city is home of the University of Pristina, Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari, the Government Building and the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo.
Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu is a Kosovan jurist and politician who is the current president of Kosovo since 2021. Osmani was born and raised in Titova Mitrovica, SFR Yugoslavia and studied law at the University of Pristina and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She worked as an advisor to the president of Kosovo Fatmir Sejdiu before she was elected to the Assembly. Osmani held the position of Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo from February 2020 to March 2021, and also served as acting president between November 2020 and March 2021 after the resignation of President Hashim Thaçi. Upon her election as president, Osmani became the second woman to hold the position, as well as the first person to have served as both acting president and president of Kosovo. Osmani successfully ran on an anti-corruption platform and has expressed a desire to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Since taking office, Osmani has returned the flag of Dardania as the official symbol of the presidency.
Lumir Abdixhiku is a Kosovar Albanian politician serving as President of Democratic League of Kosovo since 14 March 2021. He previously served as Minister of Infrastructure and Environment in the 2019. He was also a Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo from 2017 to 2019.
Xhafer Tahiri is a politician in Kosovo. He served in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo from 2013 to 2014 and was the mayor of Vushtrri from 2017 to 2021. Tahiri is a member of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
Sylejman Sylejmani was an Albanian academic, politician, military commander, and activist. He was a professor of chemistry at the University of Prishtina and served as the Education Minister of Gjakova. He also led the League of Albanian Educators (LASH) and was a co-founder of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Sylejmani participated in the Kosovo War and suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), reportedly as a result of torture endured during and prior to the conflict.
Ardian Gjini is a politician in Kosovo. He was a cabinet minister in Kosovo's government from 2005 to 2008, served in the Assembly of Kosovo from 2007 to 2014, and has been the mayor of Gjakova since 2017. Gjini has been a prominent member of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) since the party's formation in 2001.
Astrit Haraqija, whose last name is sometimes spelled as Haraqia, is a politician in Kosovo. He was the minister of culture, youth, and sports in the Kosovo government from 2004 to 2008, serving as a member of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
Teuta Sahatqija is a politician and diplomat in Kosovo. Ramë Manaj is a former politician in Kosovo. He was the mayor of Klina from 2001 to 2006 and was one of two deputy prime ministers of the Republic of Kosovo between 2008 and 2010. Isa Mustafa ( [iˈsamusˈtafa] ⓘ ;born 15 May 1951) is a retired Kosovar politician. Mustafa was the mayor of Pristina from December 2007 to December 2013 and served as the prime minister of Kosovo between December 2014 and September 2017. He was the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) between 2010 and 2021.
Mustafa was born in the village of Prapashtica,in the Gollak Highlands of the District of Pristina,Kosovo on 15 May 1951,to Kosovo Albanian parents. [1] He and his family speak Albanian in the Gheg dialect of the language. He finished primary and high school in Pristina,and attended the University of Pristina in the Faculty of Economics,where he obtained a master's degree and a PhD. [1] In 1974 he began his professional work,as an examiner at the University of Pristina. [1]
Isa Mustafa began his political career in the early 1980s,when he became the head of the municipal government of Pristina,from 1984 to 1988. [1] In the 1990s,as Yugoslavia started to break up,Mustafa became the Minister of Economy and Finances of the government of the Republic of Kosova,in exile,headed by Bujar Bukoshi. [1] During this time,an arrest warrant for Mustafa was issued within Yugoslavia –which did not become international,making it possible for him to work in Western Europe. Mustafa did not apply for any political asylum,and was able to return to Kosovo anytime if needed. [1]
After the Kosovo War ended on 1999,he returned home,but returned to politics only in 2006 as a High Political Advisor of the then President of Kosovo,Fatmir Sejdiu.
In December 2007,he became the mayor of Pristina in local elections,beating the vice president of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and one of the ex-commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK),Fatmir Limaj. [2] He won a second term as Mayor of Pristina in November 2009. [2]
On 7 November 2010,he became the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo,beating Fatmir Sejdiu in the party leadership election by 235 votes to 124. [3]
On 1 December 2013,he lost re-election to the position of Mayor of Pristina,in what was seen as a major upset,to upcoming politician Shpend Ahmeti. The upset was especially dramatic seeing as it happened in what had been historically known as a Democratic League of Kosovo stronghold.
On 8 December 2014,he became the Prime Minister of Kosovo in a coalition with the Democratic Party of Kosovo. With a PhD in Economics,he claimed his government would be focused on the economic development of the country.
While addressing the Assembly of Kosovo on 22 September 2015 regarding an agreement with Serbia on autonomy for Kosovo's ethnic Serb minority and another agreement defining the border between Kosovo and Montenegro,Mustafa was pelted with eggs by opposition Assembly lawmakers. He later continued his address while being shielded with an umbrella by his bodyguards. [4]
On 10 May 2017,Mustafa lost a vote of no-confidence and decided not to stand in the next election. Instead he nominated Avdullah Hoti as the Democratic League candidate for prime minister. Mustafa stayed on as Prime Minister until his successor Ramush Haradinaj was elected by parliament in September 2017 following a parliamentary election.
On 3 August 2019,Isa Mustafa was re-elected as leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo for the third time.
On 10 July 2020,Mustafa announced on his Facebook page that he was diagnosed with COVID-19. [5] On 1 August 2020,he revealed on his Facebook page that he had fully recovered from the disease.
On 15 February 2021,Mustafa announced he would be standing down as the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo after a poor result in the 2021 elections. He officially resigned at the LDK convention on 14 March 2021,and was succeeded by Lumir Abdixhiku,who named Mustafa as the honorary president of LDK the same day.
