The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA),formerly known as the Appellate Division,is the second-highest court of appeal in South Africa below the Constitutional Court. The country's apex court from 1910 to 1994,it no longer holds that position,having been displaced in constitutional matters by the Constitutional Court in 1994,and in all matters by 2013. It is located in Bloemfontein. Bloemfontein is often,and has been traditionally referred to,as the "judicial capital" of South Africa because of the court,although the Constitutional Court is based in Johannesburg.
The Chief Justice of South Africa is the most senior judge of the Constitutional Court and head of the judiciary of South Africa,who exercises final authority over the functioning and management of all the courts.
Sandile Ngcobo is a retired South African judge who was the Chief Justice of South Africa from October 2009 to August 2011. He served in the Constitutional Court of South Africa from August 1999 until his retirement in August 2011. Before that,he was a judge of the Cape Provincial Division and the Labour Appeal Court.
Thembile Lewis Skweyiya was a South African lawyer and judge who served on the Constitutional Court of South Africa between February 2004 and May 2014. The Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa is a judge in the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the second-highest judicial post in the Republic of South Africa,after the Chief Justice. The post,originally called "Deputy President of the Constitutional Court",was created in September 1995 by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Second Amendment Act,1995,which was an amendment to the Interim Constitution. The position was retained by the final Constitution which came into force in February 1997. In November 2001 the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution of South Africa restructured the judiciary,and the post was renamed to "Deputy Chief Justice".
The Judicial Service Commission is a body specially constituted by the South African Constitution to recommend persons for appointment to the judiciary of South Africa.
Lex Mpati is a South African retired judge who was the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa from August 2008 to May 2016. He was appointed to the bench in February 1997 as a judge of the Eastern Cape Division and he joined the Supreme Court as a puisne judge in December 2000. Before his elevation to the presidency,he was the Supreme Court's first Deputy President from 2003 to 2008. He was also an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2007.
Steven Arnold Majiedt is a South African judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. He joined the Constitutional Court in October 2019 as an appointee of President Cyril Ramaphosa. Formerly a practicing advocate,he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2010 to 2019 and in the Northern Cape High Court from 2000 to 2010.
Mandisa Muriel Lindelwa Maya is the Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa. She was formerly the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2017 to 2022. She joined the bench in May 2000 as a judge of the Transkei Division of the High Court of South Africa and was elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2006.
Xola Mlungisi Petse is a South African judge who has been the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal since 2019. A former attorney,he joined the Supreme Court as a puisne judge in June 2012. Before that,he was a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court from July 2005 to May 2012.
Belinda Jane van Heerden is a retired South African judge who served on the Supreme Court of Appeal between 2004 and 2013. Before that,she was a judge of the Western Cape High Court between 2000 and 2004. She also acted on the Constitutional Court in 2006.
Selewe Peter "Billy" Mothle is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Before his elevation to that court,he was a judge of the Gauteng High Court from January 2011 to June 2021. He rose to prominence as a lawyer in Pretoria,where he practised as an attorney until he gained admittance as an advocate in 1998. He took silk in 2008.
Aubrey Phago Ledwaba is South African judge who is currently serving as the Deputy Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa. Formerly a practising attorney in Gauteng,he joined the bench as a puisne judge in November 2005 and was elevated to his leadership position in July 2013. He was an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2019 and an acting judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal between 2020 and 2021.
Clive Michael Plasket is a South African jurist and retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2019 to 2022. He was formerly a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court from 2003 to 2019. Before that,he was a practising attorney and a legal academic at Rhodes University,renowned especially as an expert on administrative law.
Pierre J. J. Olivier was a South African jurist and judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 1995 until his death in 2003. He was an advocate and silk in Bloemfontein until he was appointed to the bench in 1985 as a judge of the Orange Free State Provincial Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa. Before entering legal practice,he taught law at the University of Pretoria from 1961 to 1969 and at the University of the Orange Free State from 1969 to 1973;he specialised in private law.
Phineas Mathale Deon Mojapelo is a South African retired judge of the High Court of South Africa. He was the Deputy Judge President of the South Gauteng Division from January 2005 to June 2020,and he joined the bench in January 2003 as a puisne judge of the North Gauteng Division. He was also an acting judge in the Constitutional Court of South Africa in 2017.
Hendrik Johannes Otto van Heerden is a South African retired judge who was the first Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa from 1997 to 2000. Formerly an advocate and silk in Bloemfontein,he joined the bench in the Free State Provincial Division in 1978 and was promoted to the Appellate Division in 1982. He was Acting Chief Justice of South Africa in 2000.
