Jack Sargeant (born 1994) is a Welsh Labour Party politician serving as Minister for Culture,Skills and Social Partnership [a] since July 2024,and a Member of the Senedd (MS). He represents the Alyn and Deeside constituency,where he succeeded his father Carl Sargeant following the February 2018 by-election. [3]
Sargeant was born in Rhuddlan [ citation needed ] in 1994 and attended Connah's Quay High School. He studied for an engineering apprenticeship at Deeside College (now Coleg Cambria) before completing a degree course at Glyndŵr University in Wrexham,then working in DRB. [4]
He was elected as MS for Alyn and Deeside at a by-election held on 6 February 2018. He succeeded his father,the previous incumbent Carl Sargeant,after Carl died by suicide in November 2017. [5] [6] At 23 years of age,Jack Sargeant became the youngest ever AM (now MS) when he was elected to the National Assembly (now the Senedd). [7]
Sargeant is an active campaigner in support of World Suicide Prevention Day,an occasion which is held on 10 September each year. He has launched an initiative called The 84,named after the 84 men who take their own lives each week in the UK. [8]
The initiative is backed by major sports clubs in Wales,including Cardiff City F.C.,Swansea City A.F.C., [9] Newport County A.F.C., [10] Wrexham A.F.C. and Connah's Quay Nomads F.C.,who all agreed to share suicide prevention messages with the hashtag #ItsOkNotToBeOk to support the campaign. [8] The clubs have also worked to include suicide prevention messages into fixtures,such as including Samaritans in their match day events on the weekend of 14 and 15 September,and holding bucket collections. [9]
Sargeant himself has spoken about the impact of suicide,stating he "sometimes finds it difficult to get up in the morning after losing his father Carl." [11]
He is also a supporter of Parkinson's UK. [12]
Sargeant was appointed Minister for Social Partnership in July 2024 by First Minister Vaughan Gething,following a cabinet reshuffle as a result of other cabinet resignations and Gething's announcement of resignation. [1] [13] He retained the role under Eluned Morgan,Gething's successor as First Minister,although renamed in September 2024 as Minister for Culture,Skills and Social Partnership,in Morgan's cabinet reshuffle. Mair Eluned Morgan, Baroness Morgan of Ely,, is a Welsh Labour politician who has served as First Minister of Wales and Leader of Welsh Labour since 2024. She previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in the Welsh Government from 2021 to 2024.
Alyn and Deeside is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The constituency was created in 1983, and it elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post method of election.

Alyn and Deeside is a constituency of the Senedd. It elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post method of election. Also, however, it is one of nine constituencies in the North Wales electoral region, which elects four additional members, in addition to nine constituency members, to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole.

Susan Lesley Griffiths is a Welsh Labour politician who was Cabinet Secretary for Culture and Social Justice from March to July 2024. She previously served as Trefnydd of the Senedd and Minister for North Wales from 2021 to 2024, and Minister for Rural Affairs from 2016 to 2024. She worked as a secretary to John Marek and the constituency assistant to Ian Lucas, successive Members of Parliament for Wrexham, and was elected to the Senedd from the Wrexham constituency in 2007. She has held a number of cabinet positions in the Welsh Government. In December 2009 she was appointed Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills.
Connah's Quay, known locally as "The Quay" and formerly known as Wepre, is a town and community in Flintshire, on the River Dee and next to the border with England. With a population of 16,771, it is the largest town in Flintshire. The town is also part of the wider Deeside conurbation and is contiguous with Shotton, Flint and Buckley.

Kenneth Christian Skates is a Welsh Labour politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales since March 2024. Skates has represented the constituency of Clwyd South in the Senedd since the election of 2011. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, and worked as a journalist prior to becoming a politician. In September 2014 he became the deputy minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport. From May 2016 to December 2018 he was the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, and was the Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales until he stood down on 13 May 2021. He held Economy, Transport and North Wales position again between July and September 2024 when he assumed the economy portfolio.
Julie James is a Welsh Labour politician currently serving as Counsel General and Minister for Delivery since September 2024. She has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Swansea West since 2011, and has served in the Welsh Government in various roles since 2018.
Hannah Blythyn is a Welsh politician who served as the Minister for Social Partnership in the Welsh Government from 2021 to 2024. She was previously the Environment Minister from 2017 to 2018 and the Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government from 2018 to 2021. A member of Welsh Labour and Co-operative Party, she has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Delyn since 2016.

Bowden has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney since 2016.

The Alyn and Deeside by-election, 2018 is a by-election that took place in the National Assembly for Wales constituency of Alyn and Deeside on Tuesday 6 February 2018, following the death of incumbent Labour AM Carl Sargeant on 7 November 2017.
The February–March 2024 Welsh Labour leadership election took place to select Mark Drakeford's successor as leader of Welsh Labour, who in turn would become First Minister of Wales. Drakeford announced his resignation and retirement on 13 December 2023, five years after his election. Voting began in February 2024 with the new leader announced on 16 March 2024. Vaughan Gething won the election with 51.7% of the vote. The next scheduled Senedd election is due on or before 7 May 2026.

The Eluned Morgan government is the government of Wales formed by Eluned Morgan from August 2024, following her appointment as First Minister of Wales on 6 August. Morgan first formed an interim government largely continuing the previous Gething government, then announced a fuller reshuffle in September 2024.
