Jadrolinija is a Croatian shipping company. It is a state-owned company and its main mission is connecting Croatian islands to the mainland by operating regular passenger and cargo transport services. The company mainly operates car ferries on domestic routes along the Croatian coast, as well as international routes across the Adriatic Sea to Italy (to ports at Ancona and Bari). [1]
Jadrolinija currently operates a fleet of 54 vessel: it has several large car ferries; Zadar , DalmacijaMarko Polo which are used on international routes mostly to Bari and Ancona in Italy. There are also 38 smaller ferries used for local passenger service, 12 catamarans and four smaller conventional ships. [2] The fleet's total carrying capacity is 4,084 vehicles and 29,902 passengers.
Jadrolinija was founded in Rijeka on 20 January 1947 as a continuation of various smaller shipping companies which had operated along the Croatian coast since 1872. [3] In 2023, its ships carried 12,411,217 passengers and 3,579,647 vehicles. [4]
In January 2022, Minister Oleg Butković announced the procurement of six new ships, three passenger ships, two of which are hybrid-powered up to 45 meters in length and three catamarans. It is expected that two will be built in 2023. One of the ships should replace the MS Postira. [5]
In November 2022, Jadrolinija announced a tender for the sale of MF Dubrovnik at a price of 2.85 million euros. The competition lasts until March 2023. [6] The ship was eventually sold to the Greek company A-Ships. [7]
In December 2022, Jadrolinija announced a tender for the purchase of a used ferry, between 100-110 m long, 17-19 m wide and 2.9 m draft, with a passenger capacity of at least 500 in winter and 700 in summer. The tender was canceled in May 2023, but was announced again in June 2023. At the opening of bids, only one bid worth 7.695 million euros was received, from Livadas Shipping Co. from Greece. [8] On 13 July Jadrolinija accepted the offer and bought ship even after media writing about the unsuitability of the ship for navigation in the Adriatic. The ship was renamed as MF Sveti Duje after the Saint Domnius. [9]
In January 2023, a tender was announced for the procurement of three new electrically powered passenger ships. The ships should sail in the Dubrovnik area, on the line to the Elafites, in the Šibenik area, where they will maintain a connection with Prvić, Zlarin and other islands, and in the Lošinj archipelago, if necessary, use them on other lines as well. The approximate length of the ships should be about 45 to 50 meters, with a transport capacity of about 390 passengers. The planned value of each of the ships, according to unofficial announcements, is around EUR 15 million, with co-financing by EU funds in the amount of 65 percent of their total value. These ships should be built by the end of 2026 at the latest, and by then HEP, together with the competent port authorities, should provide adequate connections for charging their batteries in the ports where they will dock. This year, Jadrolinija intends to start the construction of a new ferry for the Zadar water area. [10] The tender was eventually annulled as none of the contestants met the conditions, which led to publication of new tender for which the application deadline is 1 August. [11] Second tender led to choosing Kraljevica Shipyard as builder with a full arrangement to be concluded and ships to be built until the end of 2026. [12]
In April 2023, a tender was announced for the purchase of two catamarans, for which Jadrolinija is ready to pay up to 14 million euros without VAT. The condition for these ships is that they must be up to 5 years old, up to 40 meters long and up to 12 meters wide, each with a capacity of at least 300 passengers, and intended for international routes on the Adriatic Sea. Offers for these fast passenger ships are accepted until May 3rd 2023. [13] On 15 July 2023 Jadrolinija presented HSC Danica and HSC Kata as new catamarans bought from TP line for 13.4 million euros without VAT. [14]
In August 2023, the state shipowner announced a public procurement worth 18.3 million euros, according to which the ships must not be older than two years. The technical specifications, among other things, foresee a length of 40 meters, a width of 12 meters, a minimum speed of 27 knots and a capacity of a minimum of 300 passengers, and the material of manufacture must be aluminum. The ships must be delivered no later than the last day of June 2024, and the offer deadline is September 26, 2023. [15]
On 20 February 2024, Jadrolinija put MS Unije (ex Panagia Εvaggelistria) in service on line Mali Lošinj – Unije – Vele Srakane – Susak. The ship was bought for 2 million euros in April 2023 from Star Gem Maritime Company located in Greece. [16]

Transport in Croatia relies on several main modes, including transport by car, train, ship and plane. Road transport incorporates a comprehensive network of state, county and local routes augmented by a network of highways for long-distance travelling. Water transport can be divided into sea, based on the ports of Rijeka, Ploče, Split and Zadar, and river transport, based on Sava, Danube and, to a lesser extent, Drava. Croatia has 9 international airports and several airlines, of which the most notable are Croatia Airlines and Trade Air. Rail network is fairly developed but regarding inter-city transport, bus tends to be far more common than the rail.
Lošinj is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, in the Kvarner Gulf. It is almost due south of the city of Rijeka and part of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The settlements on Lošinj include Nerezine, Sveti Jakov, Ćunski, Artatore, Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj. A regional road runs the length of the island; ferry connections include Brestova - Porozina, Merag - Valbiska, Mali Lošinj - Zadar and Mali Lošinj - Pula. Lošinj Airport is on the island.

MF Jadran is a ro-ro vehicle and passenger ferry owned and operated by Jadrolinija, the Croatian state-owned ferry company. She was built in 2010 by the Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia. As of June 2010 she serves on the Split—Stari Grad route.
MV Biokovo is a ro-ro vehicle and passenger ferry owned and operated by Jadrolinija, the Croatian state-owned ferry company. She was built in July 2009 by the Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia. As of June 2010 she serves on the Split—Supetar route.
MF Sveti Krševan is a ro-ro vehicle and passenger ferry owned and operated by Jadrolinija, the Croatian state-owned ferry company. She was built in 2004 at the Kraljevica Shipyard Ltd. in Kraljevica, Croatia. As of June 2010 she serves on the local route Orebić—Dominče, connecting the Pelješac peninsula and the island of Korčula in southern Dalmatia.
MF Tin Ujević is a vehicle and passenger cruiseferry owned and operated by Jadrolinija, the Croatian state-owned ferry company. It was built in September 2002 at the Kanellos Bros shipyard in Athens, Greece. In the summer of 2003 Jadrolinija bought it for 7.5 million euros, and introduced her on 4 July 2003 on the Split—Stari Grad route. As of June 2010 it also serves on the Split—Supetar route.
The Port of Rijeka is a seaport in Rijeka, Croatia, located on the shore of the Kvarner Gulf in the Adriatic Sea. The first records of the port date to 1281. It was the main port of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, of Yugoslavia between World War II and 1991, and of Croatia after its independence. Today, it is the largest port in Croatia with a cargo throughput of 13.6 million tonnes (2020), mostly oil, general cargo and bulk cargo, and 344,091 Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
MF Prince is a ferry currently owned by Greek company A-Ships Management. She previously sailed for B+I Line as the Connacht, Brittany Ferries as the Duchesse Anne and Jadrolinija as the Dubrovnik.

HSC Dubravka is a catamaran type passenger ship owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija with a capacity of 306 passengers.
MF Hrvat is a ferry owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija with the capacity of 1200 passengers and 138 cars. The ship was built in Kraljevica Shipyard in Croatia and named after an old Croatian steamer from the 1900s. Hrvat operates on the route Split–Supetar. The passenger spaces of the ship are air-conditioned. The equipment includes hydraulic ramps and escalators.
The MF Lastovo is a ferry owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija that operates on local routes. The ship was built in Japan's Kurushima Dock Co. Ltd. for Japanese company Shikoku Chuo Ferry Boat K.K to serve the route between Kawanoe and Kobe. In 1978 the ship was bought by Jadrolinija and renamed, firstly to Partizanka, then, in the same year, to Lastovo I. In the year 1998 the ship was renamed to Lastovo.
MF Liburnija was a ferry owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija, built in 1965 by the NV Scheepswerf & Machinefabriek "De Merwede" Van Vliet & Co, Hardinxveld, Netherlands for Jadrolinija. She entered service from Yugoslavia to Greece and Italy. There were 73 passenger cabins with 182 beds in total, a restaurant for 192 people, the so-called avio-bar for 50 people, a bar for 44 and a lounge for 91 people.
MF Lubenice was a ferry owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija that operated on local routes. Built in Japan in 1983. Sold for scrap in 2022.
MF Vladimir Nazor is a ferry owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija. It operates on local routes. It was built in Kraljevica Shipyard in 1986, for DINA Petrokemija Company to transport railway boxcars. After the project's collapse it was sold to Jadrolinija and refitted for passenger transport.
Queen of the Sea is a tall ship designed and used to train vocational school and university students in Croatia. Constructed in 2009, she is the first training ship built after Croatia declared independence from SFR Yugoslavia.
The MF Mate Balota is a ferry for local lines, part of the fleet of the Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija. It was built in 1988 at the Kraljevica Shipyard. It once sailed on the line Valbiska - Merag. Today MF Mate Balota mostly sails on the lines around Zadar. In January 2018 it started sailing as a replacement on the line Dubrovnik - Suđurađ. In July 2018 it sailed on the line Zadar - Preko. It was named after Mate Balota.
Tankerska plovidba d.d. is a Croatian shipping company. Founded in 1955 in Zadar, the company transports bulk cargo, crude oil, petroleum products and passengers.
MT Petar Hektorović is a roll-on/roll-off passenger and cargo ferry currently in use as part of Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija's fleet. It is the only ferry regularly servicing the Split–Vis route in the Adriatic Sea and its crew has been praised for its skill in difficult waters and its performance in emergency service.
