Deemed university, or deemed-to-be-university, is an accreditation granted to higher educational institutions in India, conferring the status of a university. It is granted by the Department of Higher Education. To quote the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), "An Institution of Higher Education, other than universities, working at a very high standard in specific area of study, can be declared by the Central Government on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC), as an Institution 'Deemed-to-be-university'. Institutions that are 'deemed-to-be-university' enjoy the academic status and privileges of a university."
The University Grants Commission of India is a statutory body set up by the Government of India in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 under the Ministry of Education, and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disbursements of funds to such recognized universities and colleges. The headquarters are in New Delhi, and it has six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore. A proposal to replace it with another new regulatory body called HECI is under consideration by the Government of India. The UGC provides doctoral scholarships to all those who clear JRF in the National Eligibility Test. On an average, each year ₹725 crore (US$100 million) is spent on doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships by the commission.
The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) was set up by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2003 for better management of the health and medical education related courses which were until then taught separately by the University of Calcutta, and the Universities of Burdwan and North Bengal. On September 2017 UGC listed WBUHS under section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956. All the courses have been brought under one umbrella to help upgrade the level of teaching in the state.
CHRIST , is a deemed to be university in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Founded in 1969 as an autonomous college, on 22 July 2008 it was declared as an institution deemed to be university under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 by the Ministry of Education (India). The University is under the management of the priests of the Catholic religious order, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), part of Syro Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church. J. K. College, also known by the full name Jagannath Kishore College, established in 1948, is the oldest college in Purulia district, West Bengal, India. It offers undergraduate courses in commerce, arts and sciences, and postgraduate in mathematics, history, and English. It is affiliated to Sidho Kanho Birsha University.
Khalisani Mahavidyalaya is one of the oldest college in Chandannagar, in the Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. It offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce and sciences. The institution was established on 1 September 1970 to cater to the educational and cultural needs for the people of a locality stretching to the rural neighborhood in the western fringe of the town of Chandannagar. The establishment was possible because of the initiative taken by some pious and philanthropic persons. In the initial years of the journey the college achieved the recognition of the UGC under 2F and 12B, and got the affiliation under the University of Burdwan. The early years witnessed the excellence of the College in National Service Scheme and in the establishment of Hooghly District Blood Donors Society. From the last two decades of the last century Khalisani Mahavidyalaya have expanded their horizon and introduced various subjects in both Honors and General courses in B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. streams. The College is now providing 12 Honors courses, apart from four courses in the general stream to almost 1000 students for each session, who come from a large feeder zone comprising the urban settlements like Chandannagar, Chinsurah, Bandel, and the rural areas of Singur. Majority of the students passed from the institutions are at present well established citizens in various facets of professions. It is affiliated to University of Burdwan.

Centurion University of Technology and Management is a multi-sector, private state university from Odisha, India. With its main campus at Paralakhemundi in the Gajapati district and another constituent campus located at Jatni, on the fringes of Bhubaneswar, it was accorded the status of a university in the year 2010. The university has been accredited by NAAC with 'A' Grade, thereby becoming the youngest private university to have earned the distinction. In 2016, the Bhubaneswar campus of the university was ranked 81 among the institutions offering engineering education in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the NIRF.
Jaipur National University, established on 22 October 2007, is located in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, India. Founded through an ordinance passed by the Government of Rajasthan, the university is owned by Sandeep Bakshi. He owns three other schools in Jaipur: Seedling Modern High School, Seedling Public School, and Seedling Nursery School. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal (MAKAUT,WB), formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), is a public state university located beside National Highway at Haringhata, Nadia, West Bengal, India. Founded in 2001 and funded completely by the Government of West Bengal, MAKAUT, WB provide degrees in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy and other professional areas through affiliated institutions and in-house departments. In 2019, new certification and diploma courses on Archaeology were launched.
