Jake Retzlaff is an American football quarterback for the BYU Cougars. He previously played for the Golden West Rustlers and the Riverside Tigers.

High school career

Retzlaff attended Centennial High School in Corona, California. As a junior, he totaled 1,067 passing yards and eight touchdowns, before not being allowed to play in his senior year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] [2] At the conclusion of his high school career, Retzlaff committed to play college football at Golden West College.

College career

As a true freshman in 2021, Retzlaff threw for 3,302 yards and 23 touchdowns before deciding to transfer to Riverside City College. [3] [4] The following season with Riverside, he started 13 games, recording 4,596 yards passing, and 44 touchdowns, in addition to setting the school record for most passing yards in a game (529) and passing touchdowns in a single game (6). [5] [6] He entered the transfer portal for the second time at the season's end.

As the number one rated junior college quarterback in the nation, Retzlaff announced in January 2023, that he would be transferring to BYU. [7] [8] Entering the 2023 season, he was named the second-string quarterback behind Pittsburgh transfer Kedon Slovis. [9] After an injury to Slovis, Retzlaff was named the starting quarterback against West Virginia. [10] [11] In his first career start, he threw for 210 yards in a 37–7 loss. [12] The following week, he was once again named the starting quarterback. [13] [14] In his second career start against Iowa State, he threw his first career touchdown pass at the FBS level in a 45–13 defeat. [15] Retzlaff finished the season throwing for 648 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 116 yards and three touchdowns. [16]

In 2023, Retzlaff became the first ever Jewish quarterback to play at BYU. [17] [18]

The 2010 BYU Cougars football team represented Brigham Young University in the 2010 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cougars, led by head coach Bronco Mendenhall, played their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium and were members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 7–6, 5–3 in Mountain West play and were invited to the New Mexico Bowl where they defeated UTEP 52–24.

Jake Heaps is a former American professional football quarterback who is the personal quarterback coach for Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos. He was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Heaps played for three universities during his collegiate career including Miami (FL), Kansas and Brigham Young. Heaps worked as a radio host on 710 ESPN Seattle in addition to working for the Russell Wilson Passing Academy.

He played college football at BYU and joined the Saints in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. Hill was listed as a quarterback on the Saints depth chart during his first five seasons, though he took snaps at seven different positions. Hill was designated as a tight end beginning in 2022 before once again being listed as a quarterback in 2023. He has maintained similar roles on offense and special teams throughout his career, including as the Saints primary gunner.
