The 2023 BYU Cougars football team represented Brigham Young University (BYU) as a member of the Big 12 Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cougars were led by eighth-year head coach Kalani Sitake and played their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The season was the first year that BYU competed in the Big 12. [2] The BYU Cougars football team drew an average home attendance of 61,944 in 2023, the 26th highest in college football. [3]
On November 28, 2022 defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki announced his resignation. On December 7, 2022 Jay Hill was announced as his replacement leaving his head coaching position at Weber State University. [4] Hill was also given the title of associate head coach replacing Ed Lamb who was named the Head coach at Northern Colorado. [5] Preston Hadley joined Lamb at Northern Colorado as the defensive coordinator. Kelly Poppinga returned to BYU after stints with the University of Virginia and Boise State University as the special teams coordinator and defensive assistant. [6] On December 20, 2022, former NFL player Sione Pouha was hired as a defensive assistant coach. [7] On January 2, 2023, it was announced that Kevin Clune was not retained and the final defensive assistant coaching position was announced as Justin Ena who played for the cougars and coached with Hill previously. Brigham Young University entered the season at home against the transitioning FCS to FBS team, Sam Houston State. BYU were favorites to win the game, especially at home.
BYU started off the game with an 8 play, 50 yard drive ending it with a 5-yard Kedon Slovis touchdown run. Two quarters went by with no score attempted by both the Cougars and Bearkats, before an 11-play, 55 yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, and Kedon Slovis ended the drive with a 1 yard touchdown run.
The Cougars ended off the game winning 14-0 in their first ever meeting with Sam Houston State.

Justin Peato Ena is an American football coach and former linebacker who is currently the linebackers coach at Brigham Young University football. He played college football at BYU and in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans.

Kelly Scott Poppinga is an American football coach and former player. He is the special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach at Brigham Young University (BYU). He is the younger brother of National Football League (NFL) linebacker Brady Poppinga.
Kelaokalani Fifita "Kalani" Sitake is a Tongan–American football coach and former player. He has been the head football coach at Brigham Young University (BYU) since 2015, and is the first Tongan to become a collegiate football head coach. Sitake played college football as a fullback for the BYU Cougars under coach LaVell Edwards, and graduated in 2000. Prior to becoming head coach at BYU, Sitake was the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at the University of Utah, and the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Oregon State University (OSU).
The 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl is an American college football bowl game that was played on December 27, 2013, at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California. It was one of the 2013–14 bowl games that concluded the 2013 FBS football season. The 12th edition of the Fight Hunger Bowl, it featured the Washington Huskies, from the Pac-12 Conference, against the BYU Cougars, an independent team. The game began at 6:30 p.m. PST and aired on ESPN. It was the last Fight Hunger Bowl game played at AT&T Park.

They finished the season 9–4. They were invited to the Las Vegas Bowl, where they lost to rival Utah.
The 2015 Las Vegas Bowl was a post-season American college football bowl game played on December 19, 2015, at Sam Boyd Stadium in the Las Vegas suburb of Whitney, Nevada. The 24th edition of the Las Vegas Bowl featured the BYU Cougars against the Utah Utes, earning the game the moniker the Holy War in Sin City. The game sold out 24 hours after the matchup was announced. It began at 12:30 p.m. PST and aired on ABC. It was one of the 2015–16 bowl games that concluded the 2015 FBS football season. Sponsored by lubricant manufacturer Royal Purple, it was officially known as the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl.

Ilaisia Tuiaki is an American football coach who is the defensive line coach at Oregon State University. During his college playing career, Tuiaki was a linebacker and fullback at Southern Utah University (SUU) and Snow College. Tuiaki is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and earlier in his life served as an LDS missionary to New York City. In December 2015, Tuiaki was hired by Kalani Sitake to follow him to BYU as the defensive coordinator after serving as a coach at the University of Utah and Oregon State University with Sitake. Following the 2022 season, Tuiaki resigned his position as the defensive coordinator at BYU.

BYU had 13 regular season games scheduled in the season, due to their finale game at Hawaii, which NCAA rules allow them to schedule one extra home game. They finished the season 4–9.
