Jalna dry port is a dry port (inland port) located near Jalna, Maharashtra, India. It has been developed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The facility was inaugurated on 12 March 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be operated and maintained by CONCOR [1] National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and JNPT have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Jalna Dry Port in Maharashtra. [2]

The dry port is expected to operate as one of the largest major container ports of India with an upcoming container handling capacity of almost 10 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU). As announced earlier, JNPT envisaged the need to establish extended logistic facilities in the hinterland to facilitate the overall operations at the port.future. Geographically strategic locations of Jalna and Aurangabad for Jalna dry port along with Delhi - Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project and Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway Samrudhhi Mahamarg would make these cities “growth engines” of Maharashtra in the future. [3]

History

In 2014, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed that the government was looking to set up Marathwada's first dry port on 500 acres of land between Aurangabad and Jalna. [4] The Port was to be developed on private-public partnership basis. [5] JNPT appointed Ernst & Young as consultants to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the project in 2015. 185 hectares of land had been acquired at the cost of Rs. 88 Crores. [6] [7] In June 2018, during the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' trip to the UAE to attract investments to Maharashtra, Dubai-based DP World agreed to invest in logistics parks in Nagpur and develop logistics hubs along the transport corridor from JNPT to the interiors by nursing dry ports of Wardha, Jalna, Nasik and Sangli. [8] Fadnavis had mentioned that the government’s sanction for a dry port at Jalna district would enable expeditious movement of goods to JNPT. [9]

Jalna is a city in Jalna district in the Aurangabad Division, or Marathwada region, of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was part of Hyderabad State as a tehsil of Aurangabad district, before Jalna district was formed effective 1 May 1981.

The city of Nagpur is strategically located in central India. It has a vast railway network and its road network is well-maintained to avoid congestion. There are 4 modes of transportation in Nagpur. Nagpur is connected to India's four major metropolitan areas by road, rail and air. Auto rickshaws operate in most parts of the city, and are the main form of hired transport.

Expressways are the highest class of roads in India. In July 2023, the total length of expressways in India was 5,930 km (3,680 mi), with 10,225.69 km (6,353.95 mi) under construction. These are controlled-access highways where entrance and exits are controlled by the use of cloverleaf, three-way, trumpet or grade separated interchanges that are incorporated into the design of the expressway and designed for maximum speed of 120 km/h, whereas National highways are flyover access or tolled, where entrance and exit is through the side of the flyover, at each intersection of highway with road, flyovers are provided to bypass the city/town/village traffic and these highways are designed for speed of 100 km/h. Some roads are not access-controlled expressways but are still named expressways, such as the Bagodara–Tarapur Expressway, Biju Expressway, these are actually state highways that are not declared by the central government as an Expressway, hence not an Expressway or National Highway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mumbai Trans Harbour Link</span> Sea bridge in India

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu and colloquially known as Atal Setu, is a 21.8 km (13.5 mi) 6-lane grade separated expressway bridge, which connects Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. It is the longest sea bridge in India, and the world's 12th longest sea bridge. The bridge begins in Sewri, South Mumbai, crosses Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island, and terminates at Chirle near Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka, Navi Mumbai. The road is linked to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway in the east and to the Coastal Road in the west. The 6-lane highway is 27 meters in width, in addition to two emergency exit lanes, two edge strips, parallel crash barriers and noise barriers on both sides. The project costs a total of 17,843 crore (US$2.1 billion). The bridge has a capacity to handle 70,000 vehicles per day. Construction on the bridge began in April 2018, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 January 2024.

Nagpur Metro is a rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Phase I of the metro project cost was estimated to cost 8,650 crore but the final project cost incurred was 9,279 crore (US$1.1 billion). In February 2014, the Government of Maharashtra gave approval for the Metro project, while the Government of India's Ministry of Urban Development had given "In Principle" approval for the project. On 20 August 2014, Union Cabinet gave approval for the development of the project, and the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on 21 August. Construction began on 31 May 2015, with trial run beginning on 30 September 2017.

Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis is an Indian politician who is serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 30 June 2022 alongside Ajit Pawar who was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the 5th time on 2 July 2023. He also served as the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 31 October 2014 to 12 November 2019, Leader of the Opposition, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 2019 to 2022 and the President of BJP, Maharashtra state unit from 2013 to 2015. Having been sworn in at the age of 44, he is the second-youngest Chief Minister in Maharashtra's history after Sharad Pawar. He served a 5-day long second term as Chief Minister during the 2019 Maharashtra political crisis, before resigning on 28 November 2019. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Fadnavis has represented the Nagpur South West constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly since 2009 and Nagpur West from 1999 to 2009. He was also Mayor of Nagpur from 1997 to 2001.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Western Dedicated Freight Corridor</span> Railroad connecting Delhi and Mumbai

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor or Western DFC is a 1,506 km long, under-construction 1,676 mm freight corridor in India. It will connect Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai, Raigad District, Maharashtra. The corridor is being built by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a public-sector unit (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways and would be electrified with double-line operation. The Western DFC entails a new single-line branch from Prithla in Palwal district to Tughlakabad in Delhi, running parallel to the existing New Delhi–Faridabad–Palwal railway line.

Arjun Panditrao Khotkar is a Shiv Sena politician from Jalna district, Marathwada. He was Member of Legislative Assembly from Jalna, Maharashtra, India as a member of Shiv Sena. He was appointed Maharashtra's minister of state for Textile, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries in July, 2016. He has been elected for 4 terms in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for 1990, 1995, 2004 & 2014. He was Minister of state in Shiv Sena Government 1999. On 25 November 2017 his 2014 election from Jalna constituency was declared void by Aurangabad Bench of Bombay High Court for filing his nomination papers after deadline has ended.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bharatmala</span> Indian highway and expressway construction project

The Bharatmala Pariyojna is an ongoing project that will interconnect 550 District Headquarters through a minimum 4-lane highway by raising the number of corridors to 50 and move 80% freight traffic to National Highways by interconnecting 24 logistics parks, 66 inter-corridors (IC) of total 8,000 km (5,000 mi), 116 feeder routes (FR) of total 7,500 km (4,700 mi) and 7 north east Multi-Modal waterway ports. The project also includes development of tunnels, bridges, elevated corridors, flyovers, overpass, interchanges, bypasses, ring roads etc. to provide shortest, jam free & optimized connectivity to multiple places, it is a centrally-sponsored and funded Road and Highways project of the Government of India. This ambitious umbrella programme will subsume all existing Highway Projects including the flagship National Highways Development Project (NHDP), launched by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998. Bharatmala is mainly focused on connecting remote areas and satellite cities of megacities such as Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad etc. The total investment for 83,677 km (51,994 mi) committed new highways is estimated at 10.63 lakh crore (US$130 billion), making it the single largest outlay for a government road construction scheme. The project will build highways from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and then cover the entire string of Himalayan territories - Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand - and then portions of borders of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alongside Terai, and move to West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and right up to the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur and Mizoram. Special emphasis will be given on providing connectivity to far-flung border and rural areas including the tribal and backward areas.

The Nerul–Uran line or Port Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway is a railway line serving between CBD Belapur and Nerul in Navi Mumbai with Uran in Navi Mumbai of India, which is attached to the Harbour line. It was inaugurated on 11 November 2018. Daily services started on 12 November 2018.

Red Line 9 (extension) of the Mumbai Metro is part of the metro system for the city of Mumbai, India. Metro Line 9 is an extension of the Red Line from Andheri to CSMIA and Dahisar to Mira Road. This line will be unique from the other metro lines because it will run on a double-decker bridge. There will be a flyover on the first deck and the metro will run on the second deck. The flyover will start near the proposed Shivaji Chowk metro station and will end in Bhayander (West) via Mira Bhayander Road. It shall provide interconnectivity among the Western Express Highway, the Western Line, and the Mumbai Metro.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chief Minister Fellowship</span>

Chief Minister Fellowship is a 12-month long fellowship program run by the Chief Minister's Office, Government of Maharashtra, India. The program was launched by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis in 2015 with an aim of involving young professionals in various key initiatives and departments of the Maharashtra State Government. Their web-page explains that the fellowship is designed in a way to provide the fellows a better understanding of governance, public administration and policy-making and at the same time the government can leverage the diverse experiences and enthusiasm of the fellows to better coordinate existing projects and introduce new ones.

The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is a 1,350 km long, 8-lane wide under-construction access-controlled expressway connecting India's national capital New Delhi to its financial capital Mumbai. The foundation stone for the project was laid by union minister Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on 8 March 2019 and is inaugurated by PM Modi. The total project value including the land acquisition cost is around ₹1,00,000 crores .

The Samruddhi Mahamarg or Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway and Maharashtra Expressway-2 (ME-2), is a partially opened 6-lane wide, 701-km long access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra, India. It is amongst the country's longest greenfield road projects, which will connect the two capital cities of the state, its capital, Mumbai, and its third-largest and alternate capital city, Nagpur. The project is being led by the state infrastructure arm Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and is designed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Nisarga</span> North Indian Ocean cyclone in 2020

Severe Cyclonic Storm Nisarga was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Indian state of Maharashtra in the month of June since 1891. It was also the first cyclone to impact Raigad & Mumbai since Phyan of 2009. The third depression and second named cyclone of the 2020 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Nisarga originated as a depression in the Arabian Sea and moved generally northward. On 2 June, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded the system to a cyclonic storm, assigning the name Nisarga. On the next day, Nisarga further intensified to a severe cyclonic storm and turned to the northeast, ultimately making landfall approximately 95 km (60 mi) south of Mumbai. Nisarga rapidly weakened once inland and dissipated on 4 June.

The Nagpur–Goa Expressway, also known as the Shaktipeeth Expressway, is an approved 802 km (498 mi) long, six-lane access-controlled expressway, which will connect the third-largest city of Maharashtra, Nagpur, with the state of Goa. It will pass through 12 districts of Maharashtra and one district of Goa. It will be operated and maintained by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and will reduce both travel time and distance by 18–20 hours to only 7–8 hours, and from 1,110 to 802 kilometres. It will be built at a cost of 83,600 crore (US$10 billion), which was earlier slated at 75,000 crore (US$9.0 billion). It is named the Shaktipeeth Expressway, as it will pass through three Shakti Peethas. They are Mahalakshmi, Tuljabhavani, and Patradevi, along with two of the 12 Jyotirlingas at Aundha Nagnath and Parli Vaijnath, as well as temples dedicated to Renuka in Mahur, Tuljabhavani in Tuljapur, along with the revered Vithoba Temple of Pandharpur and Dattatreya Sampradaya shrines at Audumbar and Narsobawadi. It will be the longest expressway in Maharashtra.
